PS3 Slim Backwards Compaibility :(

Archive: 29 posts

I have been trying to look it up, but i can't seem to find very good answers,
Will the Ps3 Slim ever get a update to have B/C, because it seems weird that they would take out the feature in new versions of the system
And im pretty sure PS3 slim can play PS1 but it cannot play Ps2

That is correct you can play PS1 games but not PS2 on the slim. No I don't think the slim will ever play PS2 games...I have 3 PS2s and a backwards compatible launch PS3...want to buy a PS2? 2010-08-03 21:57:00

Indeed, the PS3 slim is not backwards compatible. I've heard you can play PS1 games, but not PS2... I know... I've tried.

They stopped making PS3 slims that are B/C, I think, is due to the cost?

Maybe they just want to sell more PS2s / PS2 games for PS3...

Sony took out BC in order to cut down costs. But I remember reading an article months ago that Sony filed a patent for a PS2 emulator. With that I think that BC may make it's way to the PS3, but I think it would be in the form of PS2 downloads on PSN rather than just giving everybody an emulator.2010-08-03 23:56:00

If they went down that route then yeah you would have to pay for them. I couldn't see Sony giving away PS2 games for free. Though I'd much rather see them put up a stand-alone emulator for download, even if you had to pay for it.

Who cares about the PS2 backwards compatibility, PS1 games are sooooo much better.

But I would like to replay shadow of the collosus, although the team ICO collection will sort that out

I wondered that until I started seeing the ps2 "collections" popping up.
It's just to make more money gosh darn it. And because there are trophies attached, they will sell. *facepalm*
How does the majority of gamers NOT see right through this BS?!

I would definitely use BC-PS3. I wanted to play some Crash 3 yesterday for some LBP inspiration, but I couldn't find my ps2.

Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped? That will play fine on all PS3's

Sony wants our money...shockers!?! If someone will buy an old PS2 game and play it for many hours just for the opportunity to get a virtual trophy I'm all for any company milking them for all their worth...those people deserve it!

I think the PS2 collections are a great idea. I bought the GoW collection to play before GoW3 because I never played them on the PS2. I will also definitely get the ICO/SoTC collection even though I have the PS2 versions already...they are two of my favorite games. I couldn't be more apathetic about the trophies, it's the 1080p and increased frame rate...the collections aren't straight ports you know. I can't think of any other collections I would actually buy...

The PS3 backwards compatibility was nice in theory when the PS3 was launched and there weren't many games I was interested in. I played FF12, Odin Sphere, Rogue Galaxy, and Okami on my PS3...of course I could have easily played these on any one of my 3 PS2s but I thought it was convenient to only have 1 console hooked up to the tv.

This bad decision seriously delayed my being able to finish FF12 because there were a number of issues with sound/graphics that required multiple system updates to correct. At that time the save file transfer was only 1 way or I would have finished playing on the PS2. Any sort of emulation will also have problems...the best way to play PS2 games will always be on a PS2 which you can pick up very cheaply.

Now there are plenty of good PS3 games...the 100+ PS2 games I own are just collecting dust...

Because it's not for the Fat PS3 its for the 60/20 gb units that had both PS2 chips and the 80 gb units that had 1 of the PS2 chips.

BC for PS2 games was stopped 2 years before the slim.

Yeah they've got PS1 mostly fully emulated which is why they can be played on the PSP too (when bought off the PS Store)

There's a few exceptions though, last time I played Final Fantasy 7 most the game worked fine but there was terrible slow down on the Knights of the Round summon. Although that may have been fixed by any of the Firmware updates in the last 2 years.

Were you playing 7 on disc or digital, because on disc I have never had a problem, infact it was the only game I played in the summer of 2009, apart from LBP and monster hunter, But then my PSP broke so I couldn't play monster hunter (well I could but I had to break my thumb everytime) so yeah I have never had a problem with FF7 on disc might just be a problem with the digital.

However you should't use KOTR anyways its grossly overpowered.

Anyone notice that the first batch of PS3's (the BC ones) are also the ones that YLOD?
Me thinks this is not a coincidence

Honestly it probably is all about the money.
if they don't eventually add it, you can expect a lot of major ps2 titles to be re'released, going by the GOW and sly cooper situation..

Disc in 2008. Like I said it could have been fixed since I last played it.

It sucks that PS3 slim isn't backwards compatible. especially seeing as my backwards-compatible non-slim PS3 YLODed

If I really want to play my PS2 games though I'll just go buy a PS2 in the 2nd hand shop for ?20.
