Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy - Part IRyhas
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss258/daneeyul/LBP%20Keen/APhoto_2.jpgThe Shikadi are going to destroy the galaxy! Play through Border Village, Slug Village, and the Perilous Pit, the first three levels in Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle. Aboveground is safer, but underground has more points and secrets! Best for 1-2 players, but any number can play. There's a reward for acing! And more levels to come...
Anyone ever play Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy? It was the very fist video game I'd ever played. This is a Little Big Planet translation of that! I hope ya'll enjoy it.

I will *gladly* F4F (don't worry about being too harsh, though I'd like to know what you like as well as don't like). I think five is a good limit for the moment (I may be slow, but I'll get it done). If I think that's too few, I'll say so and do some more.

http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss258/daneeyul/LBP%20Keen/APhoto.jpg
Billy Blaze's... er... Commander Keen's workshop, anyone?

http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss258/daneeyul/LBP%20Keen/APhoto_1.jpg
The Oracle seems to have a problem.

http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss258/daneeyul/LBP%20Keen/APhoto_3.jpg
The Poison Slugs in Border Village are oh-so-friendly!

http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss258/daneeyul/LBP%20Keen/APhoto_5.jpg
I wantz the platforrrrmmm....

A video, kindly taken by Count!

Anyhow, enjoy and tell me what you think!

--Changelog--
-Fixed the censoring of the word "immortal"
-Slowed the mushrooms down
-Fixed a little bug with invisible walls in the oracle
-Added a magic mouth so the player knows the platform moves

--To do--
-Pretty up the crazed page (the dude in yellow)
-Work on fire in general

Unfortunately your level isn't coming up on Search.

Too bad. I love Commander Keen, huge fan, so I really want to play this. Will check later!

Aw, sorry. I republished, maybe that'll fix it?

EDIT: Yeah, that fixed it. A search for "Commander Keen" should bring it up.

Got it going I really like the cinematic approach in this. The art is very faithfully recreated for the most part, I love the background in the first stage. It looks great! The building faces lifting up like that works really well too. You even have the gems and the secrets down!

Some notes: The conversation with the first guy after landing the rocket is broken, at one point it just turns into *********************************** ... I hate that in LBP
The very first string of point bubbles breaks and falls to the ground as soon as you get a few... intentional?

In any case, good job, hearted!

Uh-oh, looks like I have some magic mouth fixing to do. Hopefully the game doesn't make me change the conversation too much. And yes, the string falling was intentional, though I've considered using an emitter for the same purpose. I may do that instead.

In any case, good job, hearted!
Awesome, thanks! Is there any level in particular of yours you want me to give feedback on?

EDIT: Fixed the censored text. Apparently "immortal" is considered evil. *Shrug.* Anyway, I tested it online and it appears to work. Can anyone verify this?

Ha that's so weird, LBP censors the weirdest words. I'm just glad I didn't have issues with the word sensors yet. I think it works.

If anything my new Kitchen Katastrophy would be good I just put it up and am anxious to hear what people think of it.

The rocket ship ride at the start was awesome, i thought most of the gameplay was good but i got lost a couple times lol, so for me it was a 4 star level XD2010-08-06 18:33:00

Hey, thanks for putting this here! I'm glad you liked the rocket! The gameplay I was worried about, so it's good to know you enjoyed that too.

Sorry you got lost a few times. I modeled it directly after the original game, Commander Keen 4, and there are no directions in that either... you just wander around and figure out where you are eventually. However, I may be able to provide some directions, and I'll keep that in mind for the future levels. I want exploration; I don't want anyone getting lost.

Thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate it.

Commander Keen is the altar ego of a kid named Billy Blaze... a very old video game that I love to death. I'm so glad you loved it! The ship was actually the hardest part, made me want to chuck my controller at something, but I'm glad it turned out well.

I'm not exactly sure what the "green thing" is, but maybe that's the stuff that came from the slugs? Hehe, I could see why you might want to grab it, but that's not something I would have thought of.

Thanks for playing it! I'm glad you liked it!

Level was very fun:

Positives:
+ Ship ride was neat how to put that together
+ Gameplay
+ Platforming
+ tree design brought out the cartoon of the level same for the monsters.

Overall Nice Job::star::star::star::star:

Thanks, appreciated! I'm glad you like it! The ship ride is a ridiculously complicated mass of logic, but here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=31028-Moving-a-spaceship-logic-help) explains it more or less.

Anything you didn't like or you think I could improve?

And any level in particular you want me to give you feedback on?

Thanks again for playing!

I loved the Aesthetics of the Level, it was bold and definitely looked pretty. There was some solid gameplay in there as well and the Space ship transitions were pretty awesome. I also thought it was an neat touch when you walked in the house and the front lifted up so you could look inside the house. Your level is full of those neat little touches. My main problem with your level is that it's very confusing. Both in terms of Story & in Gameplay. I felt you tried to include too much story in one level, I had no idea about the Wizard I was supposed to save at the end of the level until I actually saw him at the end of the level. Also I felt the part with the black floating platforms felt inconsistent & out of place in the level.

Overall I liked it but it made no sense 4 stars & an Heart

Haha, thanks for the review! I see what you mean about the confusion concerning the wizard and the story; perhaps I should make it more clear that the wizard is who the player is seeking. The story is just taken from the original game, immensely condensed, but I'll see if I can clear it up some.

The black platforms are a huge part of the original game, so I'll probably keep them.

I'm glad you liked it, though, and thanks for the play, the stars, and the heart! I really appreciate the input.

Thanks! I'm glad another Commander Keen fan could enjoy this!

And there's definitely a continuation coming. I'm hard at work on Part II (Cave of Descendants). It's shorter, but it should be out in a week or two, and then I'll start Part III (Pyramid of Shadows), which should be more a full-length level. And at the moment I've planned 12-13 levels (including levels from Commander Keen 5), so I've got my work cut out.

I really appreciate the plays, stars, and the heart! When I get back to my PS3, I'll give some feedback on your level (which looks amazing from the screenshots, I might add).

Very nice level. I love the rocket ship and the epic background music that played throughtout. It felt like a big level somewhat, lot's to do, yet, not getting lost which was nice. Some areas lacked detail and looked bland though. However, I absolutely loved the trees. Goodjob on that.
I think you should work a little more on the design of your creatures/NPCs because the soldier at the beginning of the level looked terrifyingly ugly and out of place.

Overall, I really enjoyed this level.

I gave it :star::star::star::star::star:.

Thank you for leaving feedback on my level.

And thank you for yours! I appreciate the feedback, and I had plans already to pretty up the page/soldier guy (like, seriously... his flat arms bother me to no end). At the moment, if I do anything in the level, the thermo will freak and stop me (literally... even just deleting a vertex... those trees took up a freakish amount of thermo), so I'm gonna have to do some cheating before I can accomplish everything that's in my to-do list. But I will definitely consider working on the characters, and also possibly the creatures. Which areas in particular seemed bland? I'd like to work with them if the changes will fit the original game.

You honor me with all those stars... thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully you'll see some improved character designs in the future

I played both your Commander Keen levels tonight and liked it!
I dunno why you don't have a thread for the second but whatever, since they were available I played them both. I have to tell you that I don't know jack about Commander Keen so if I like the level, it's because of other reasons
On the first level, I like how everything is kept simple but yet it works. The flying ship was awesome and I actually felt like I traveled. I like levels that use different environnements. You forest was cute and I loved the faces on the tree. Another good point is the exploration you can do in the level. I generally like your "secret" and alternate path althrough they weren't THAT secretive. Anyways, nice sense of freedom.
On the less good side of things now, those red balls were a bit annoying. I mean, they are so twitchy that you never feel effective jumping on them. I also am not a fan of the mushrooms. For some reason I had problems timing myself with them. ( and God know how much of a strong dose of those I had in the second level lol)

Speaking about the second level... I think the beginning was a bit less cool but the cave was interesting and full of exploration nonetheless. Only thing that didn't do with me is that sometimes it didn't feel "solid". It's hard to explain, might be related to the asthetics but sometimes you don't necessarily see what you wish you were seeing and the platforming sometimes doesn't go like you would expect. Needless to say, I died alot in this one but more because of it's trial and error nature than because I was bad. Sometimes I would fall a pit (cause that was the only way to do it) and then fall into spikes. Since I couldn't react fast enough, such type of death can feel cheap for the player. I dunno if you're still in the making of the second level but some tweaking and decorating could maybe make this level great instead of good.

The second level's thread is here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33062-Commander-Keen-Goodbye-Galaxy-Part-II).

Thanks for your feedback for the both of 'em. It's muchly appreciated. I find it almost funny that the spaceship makes everyone the happiest when that was only minimally part of the original game (a tiny still shot on one of the pages of the story, haha).

As for the second level... well, both levels are adapted from the original game, Commander Keen 4. I figured I'd go ahead and get it out of the way, since it's pretty low as far as scenery goes and I had to really ramp things up. I may be able to step up the decoration some more, though. As far as the mushrooms go, I could slow them down a bit. It's good practice for me, anyhow, when I get done remaking Keen and go on to my own levels.

--Edit--
RangerZero, I made some changes that should make it easier to *not die,* especially with the mushrooms. Everyone, any further changes to Part II are documented at the other thread, here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33062-Commander-Keen-Goodbye-Galaxy-Part-II)

Nice level. The gameplay is good and the rocket ride that takes you to another planet is ingenious. The visuals are okay but the layer glitch with the living trees are well made [reminds me of one of the Super Nintendo games]. However some things could be more polished and the movement of the jumping mushrooms could be 1 second slower. Overall it's a good level. 4 stars

OK. Done with part one. Great level, man.

I loved, loved, LOVED the spaceship and flight sequences.

The oracle freaked me out a little. She was kind of odd looking. No biggy though because...

The slug planet was awesome. The bouncy, sproingy... whatever it was that welcomed me was irresistible to grab onto and bounce around on, and it rewarded me well for my playfulness. Well done.

The huts were really neat looking and the maze of corridors underneath was big big fun to explore! The slugs were really well made too.

I got a little confused as to what the switch on the far left of the underground section had done. When I got back above ground, I saw the moving platforms, but they might have been easy to miss. Maybe a magic mouth over there set to cutscene when the switch is flipped could show people where to go next.

I've never played the original, but this was a lot of fun with some great visuals to boot!
I gave it five stars and a heart.

Thanks for the play, hearts, stars, and especially the enjoyment! I'm glad you liked it.

Actually, it's funny, the oracle is the big metal thing and the girl is actually a guy who is a Council Page. But I didn't make that up on my own...

I may put a magic mouth to demonstrate what the switch does (I thought about it), but I've always been opposed to it. Unless I can make it funny... hm... you've got me started now.

Thanks again! (Oh, btw, my brothers and friend played your Invasion level, and thought it was brilliantly fun, and didn't mind the monochrome either, so well done!)
