New Material: Clay

Archive: 28 posts

Ok, so I've been thinking, "Man, I want a muffin." But I've also been thinking, "Hey, I sorta want some clay in LBP2."

Ok, so the basic properties are that it is pretty mushy, so jumping on it repeatedly will make a good sized hole in there for you. You can also stretch it to an extent, and sort of "sculpt" it with your hands or other objects. Pulling long and hard enough can result in a piece popping off, with a satisfying "splop." Then you can drag it about, or pick it up with your power gloves, and return it to it's source, or take it away to use for something. You could also maybe hide some points, or a prize, or something in a big pile of clay and have people dig it up. It could also interact with fire, mainly hardening in its shape when it is above it. Pieces can still be broken off, but with more difficulty, and will probably just stay in it's shape. Some possible materials for this category could be like Dough or just regular Clay. So what do you think? Would this be too hot to handle, or a possibility?

Sounds a little complicated, but I think it would be possible seeing as the new goo material has been confirmed, This would open up SO SO many new possible gameplay ideas!2010-08-01 04:09:00

Lol, Muffin.... :arg:
Anyways GREAT IDEA that would be so awesome!
Imagine how many people would use it as dough and make cooking levels o:
But clay would be so fun!
I would sit there for about an hour squishing it down, Lighting it on fire and pulling it to pieces
I hop this turns out to be a real material in LBP2 :3

We need this. Should we just ask for everything that has a material property in existence in LBP2? And muffins, we need those as well. Yummy. 2010-08-01 10:24:00

maybe one material in the catagory should be bouncing putty with the added property of bouncing in the oposite direction to the point that hits the floor...2010-08-01 18:47:00

Yeah, this is actually a pretty cool idea... too bad it won't be in the game. Creating a soft body (a mesh material; one that can bend) is pretty complex... Creating a soft body that doesn't lag is even more so.

It's the same issue as dynamic water... it's just too much. Also, I doubt that Mm would want to spend forever working on the properties of one material.

Lastly, I think that this would more appropriately be called the Goo material, as clay is pretty resilient, especially when you're only 8 cm tall.

This is a splenderific idea! As Moony said, it would cause lag.

Maybe if you mix it with water it can go squidgy and you can sink in it 2010-08-06 01:35:00

Another thing about it getting wet and sinking, when you are under you have 10 seconds and then you suffocate, but a friends could dig you out!2010-08-06 02:14:00

... or your friends can bery you...
i do think that is a good idea, and it can add more to game play. but sorry, if notheing is told about it soon, there is a little chance of it being in the game. LBP is probbly all done, its just all of the polishing that they need to do.
and a got to say, what goo? i have not heard anything about that...

Wow, Imagine the possibilities with such a material, its a shame though that this could cause a lot of problems though, like uhhh, THE ENTIRE GAME CRASHING!!! But yeah, great idea though.2010-08-06 17:40:00

This idea's actually pretty good. The only thing is that it would be some thing you would have to play test like....A LOT. But this material would be really helpful for the game I am making. Nice idea...2010-08-07 09:21:00

That sounds awesome, there could be a tweak menu for you to adjust the pliability of it. It would probably kill the thermometer though.2010-08-07 18:28:00

Oddly I've been reading from Moony in oh so many threads that LBP2 is already in Alpha, meaning no big changes... or was Moony wrong?

And WE CAN HAZ MUFFINZ!

Muffin Objects found in Steam&Cake. Though anyone seen the Adventure trailer knows that already.

it could be done, but the hardening near fire dosn't sound viable.2010-08-08 16:10:00
