Human Being?

You can't classify someone as a 'style'
And the people that think they fit in with/call themselves said stye, are either posuers or desperate to fit in with other people to the point where they would change how they act just to be accepted by someone. Someone who is truly into the occult would not call themselves 'goth'. Someone who whines about how bad every little thing is for them is looking for attention, not to be called 'emo'. And someone who is into computers/comics/video games/reading/whatever, would hate to be called a nerd.

No offense to you, I just think the whole concept of it is rediculous. :/

I don't like to label myself either because it means sticking yourself in a box with all the others of your chosen 'style' and I prefer to think of myself as an individual.2010-08-01 13:56:00

Aren't they the same thing?

Anyway, I have no idea what I am. I'd need another person's opinion.

noones really that unique....theres always gonna be someone who dresses or thinks the same as you do...even if it isnt that many

and this whole attitude of "i dont give myself a label cus i dont wanna be put in a box...im unique" as which is mentioned earlier in this topic..is kinda...a void remark. that just means your a normal person....who is just a person, with some sort of delusion that your different from the rest...nobody is that unique. by all means try, but theres still gonna be people the same as you..somewhere. its a human mind, it can think all it wants, but there will be others thinking the same...however, i do believe that people should think as much as possible and not be a mindless drone to anybody....even if you follow something, if you believe in something, question it. i do...all the time, if i like it...i question it still if i dont like it...of course i question..if i dont know much about it...yes..more questions. im always thinking about something

so i just say....just be whoever....dress how you wanna dress, think how you wanna think, be how you wanna be

all these labels if you will are just ways to differentiate people from other people...get rid of those, and everyone would be the same, hence the whole not wanting a label and being unique would be a lost vision as everybody would be unidentifiable from the others and hence, less unique as youd like to think yourself as and not your own person

i dunno if i agree with labels or not, i can see why they are there....its just a name to refere to someone. its pretty hard to describe someone without one sometimes and is just a quick reference point nothing to take too seriously..however people would get them wrong....calling people a goth just cus they are wearing black when they arent, calling them a chav just cus they got a hoodie on when they arent and all that. but labels can help....if someone says "oh my friend will be meeting up with us at that time too, ill be along later just wait for them, theyll be the one with red hair" and you go to the meeting place before them both and two people either side of you pull up and stand there you wont know who the friend is...asking either one of them isnt something many people or shy people would do and hence, wont go to find out. so if on the phone they say "theyll be the goth with red hair" theyll find them a bit easier and since they have more of an idea, would be more knowing of who the other friend is...plus it lets them know easier if there even waiting in the right place if the area is a bit confusing just by knowing roughly what someone looks like who is there too

if someone was walking around wearing complete 70s gear what would you call them without a label? nothing....youd call them nothing as a label is what exists to call them something so you can identify them. some guy walking in 70s get up would be called things like a disco freak, funkster and so on....just so others can refere to them

labels can reflect people interests..we call people rockers cus they like rock music and rock out to it for example. but of course, people can and are called numerous things

nobody is totally unique when you really think about it. different to some extent, stand out from the crowd yes...these people do exist, but they arent alone. so just hang out with whoever, a group of people the same as you, or different from you...whoever you want. be whoever you want, even if you class youself as labless...someone will give you one...like...labelless >_>

although from my point i do dislike the majority of society....i wont be told who to be, i decide who i am...who my friends are, what i am like, what i think and what i do and everyone else thinking they can tell me what i should be like i turn around and say no....i decide what i should be like, its my mind and ill make it up....not some other guy. like for instance, if i get a job id want it to be working less for the government as possible...i also refuse to be a corporate person too. i can see why we have corporations...they provide us with things....i just dont like their whole money money attitude in a world where money by many means is valued higher than a human life

now people may think im unique in thinking for myself or dressing mostly in spikes and lace....to some extent i may very well be as a lot of people just follow whats popular cus its cool or whatever....but there are still others like me, who choose for themselves what they are into and what they do and what they feel comfortuble wearing. i like some things that might be popular, but not a great deal....i still havent even seen many films that others have like the godfather for instance....mafia...just dont interest me so much...so i aint gonna see it...i dont give a rats tail how popular it is...i will not see it. and i of course like unpopular things...i dont listen music on the radio, and i dont like mainstream music...the stuff i like is largely undergound and some of it only a little known

basically just stick to what you want to, but its still classed and labelled as something or other cus people name things

i can see why people dont like labels, as you can be called what your not by mistaken identidy and also dont wanna be confined by names. others may like them as they are just names to try and drive home the main vibe someone gives off or as a name to refere to....i however am not sure about labels, they have their uses, but at the same time can become rather tedious

The point was that they are fake labels used by people who DONT really like that stuff but are using them as a way to be like everybody else. Everybody might not be 100% unique but we are not simple enough to be labeled as anything less than human.2010-08-02 22:31:00

I don't believe for one minute that when you see a goth walking down the street the word goth doesn't come into your head. I honestly don't. You may not think that it defines them fully as a person and you may not judge them for it, but don't tell me that these labels for various subcultures don't pop into your head when you look at other people. I simply do not believe you.

ahh, then i see your point....however if those people are into that stuff or not, those labels will be used still, whether they are it or not. but still, if you see someone you acsociate with a certain label youd still call them it anyway even if you say you dont use them, people need a name to call things for ease of refering to

but i do agree with what rtm says

I don't, because I know people are more than what they wear.

Call them that why? What is a Goth? Because they wear black? Because they might have a peircing somewhere other than their ear? Bikers have peircings and wear black, are they Goth?
What if they just like the color black? What if they just like peircings? What if they hate everything that 'Goth' people are supposed to be into? Labels are just a way to pass ignorant judgment on others without knowing who they really are.

Also a lot people dress as these labels as fads, would you consider them to be part of it even though they don't even understand what they're doing? ex: A movie comes out and girls start wearing black for a while, are these girls 'Goth' just because they have black on? They're just being posuers trying to fit in with the people around them, so their label can't be 'Goth' :/

All labels will do is divide people who are similar to each other and put them in with a group of people they may not like or know, just bcause of the way they look.

Geek
Everyone here probably places in that category, though. Don't deny it. You know it to be true.

youd be an idiot to think anyone is a goth cus they were black....lots of people wear the colour. but then again, a goths black clothing is often a different shape to anothers non goths black clothing. for example..it may be an extreamly frilly shirt where the normal guy might be just wearing a plain samey old black one..a normal one

but then again..not all people who wear a goths clothing, would be a goth....it would help them to also have a lot of the same interests to be one

but when they wear dark colours, spikes, lots of lace and leather, frills...chains, intricate jewelry and things of that nature and have an interest in the dark, obscure, morbid, religion, science, good, evil and stuff...then you could call them that

you know, these guys...you cant look at them and not see a goth, i dont believe you
41613
41614
41615

but if we didnt use these labels to call people...what would you use to refer to them as? other names? why...then the other names would become the labels themselves....you cant avoid it

as for being more than what they wear...yes they are more than what they wear. thats why they have other names from one another, to identify what exactly they are. to call them the same as another person could be considered rude to them, as their different dress often reflects their different ideas and thoughts and thats how they might show that and if you ignore that, you ignore who they are. so they kinda need a label to distinguish them from other people, so people know who they are and they stand for different things...you know, varieties of different people

there is nothing wrong with people being called different things, it just means other people, notice the difference

How about, stereotypes can be spot on, or sometimes just plain rude. You can call them a stereotype or you can call them Human beings. Either way, your probably gonna end up saying "Hey dude!" "Hey Jerk!" "Hey Loser!" etc. and not "Hey Goth!" "Hey Athletic!" or "Hey Human Being #65465123!"

So just leave it at that :I

You can tell yourself that you see every human as exactly the same thing, because that makes you look like your an open minded kinda person, and im sure you don't judge people for how they appear. However, you will form preconceptions about how to react to different people based upon their appearance, why? Because that is all you have to go on when you first meet them, so you make a guess about how best to approach and interact with them based upon previous experiences and preconceptions.

Sure you might be well off with your stereotypes, but you do use them and adapt as more information becomes available. If you didn't, as you claim, you would be the most socially inept person around

Fair do's guys, I suppose it is feasible that you don't have normal, basic, human behavioural patterns and that you don't adapt your behaviour to the perceived environment and situation. I mean, everyone else does it, but nah... I'm sure you're special *

Maybe this thread should be left to people who actually wish to answer the question, rather than discussing the relative pro's and con's of cultural stereotypes within society and their impact upon our behaviour - especially seeing as that conversation is getting nowhere

i think everyone look hillerious to some degree....its just human nature, all be it natural to us, just seems a little odd to me....how we of all other animals on the planet, managed to grow a mind and body that enables us to do the things we do above any other species and yet our primal animal instincts and attitudes still shine through keeping us linked with the natural animal world...

Except for 99% of the population who acts exactly how the media/Hollywood tells them to.

That saying doesn't apply when you have mindless drones in your society.

Are you going against the word of my primary school headmistress and saying not everyone is special in their own way?!? :O
Blasphemy!!!

Naw but seriously you can't just classify humanity as one big, buzzing ball of indifference... You can't state that not everyone is unique. Everything is unique! Whether it be humans or mass produced Sony ericson earphones for the Walkman w395.
If I got two pairs of headphones and said they were the same pair, you'd call me insane! Because although they might be similar in appearance, they are not the same. And I dont just mean in a deap molecular level (in which they are different) , but also in their position in space, in which no two things can occupy. In which these two things differ. And for fear of my metaphor dragging on too long, I think I'll sumarise by saying that nothing is unique, other than in the respect that they have the common property of being unique or in other words:
"Just remember you're unique, just like everyone else"

Case closed.
End of story.
That phrase makes sense.

Dum dum duuuuum!

People, this a thread, the guy's not labelling you or.. whatever. Don't take it seriously.

If I made a thread named 'What cheese are you?' I expect people to not go moping off about how people are not cheese. It's just rude.

And it's funny how some people here are saying 'I'm unique!' just because everyone else is doing it. How hypocritical.

And it's funny how some people here are saying 'I'm unique!' just because everyone else is doing it. How hypocritical.

?
Talking about us??

Yea I think we kinda got off topic a bit lol''

Everyone is different and unique is some way. If everyone in the world acted the sane, looked the same and were the mostly the same, your DNA is still different.

@Post above that said he loves science. If your saying your a nerd because you love science, plaese don't. A lot of people say smart people are nerds and geeks and have no life. People even say books are stupid and dumb. I just don't get why those people think being smart is nerdy and books are stupid. Oh and trust me. My old school had different bands ranging from smartest to dumbest. The majority of dumb people said all that. I was in the top A or smartest class, now I'm at college. Science doesn't make you a nerd though. That's just a steroptypical nerd in the medias view.

Ps.
science is awesome. I wanna be a doctor when I'm older xD

This is only a thread to have an interesting dicussion about peoples sterotypes. My bad for saying styles but I can't change it now. Everyone has different opinions so just respect each others views. Does anyone have a real emotional side to them that they are embarrassed to tell anyone about? I know I do..2010-08-03 23:55:00

and yet theur dna is fundamentaly the same as it results in them being a human....fair enough chemically and dna structurely people are sorta unique....but the masses of people are the same, the way they think, act and view the world. sure this differs from other people too, but largely, the mass of people we see in our society are the same and some of them shun anyone else who has a different point of view2010-08-04 00:12:00

Well, at school, everyone hates me for no reason. So that's always fun. So I guess I would fit somewhere between the 'losers' and the 'nerds/geeks'.

But that's just my group.

I don't care about popularity etc and I think it's a really stupid concept. So I try to act as 'unpopular' as possible by being all crazy and weird. And then when people beat me up or insult me or be generally mentally abusive, I just usually ignore them while they're doing it. (Yes, even the beating up).

But if someone insults one of my friends/family etc then I go crazy andhave a conversation with them, insulting them etc while still not shouting. But I never try to get into any physical fights etc.
Soooo.. Yeah!

I know how you feel. I basically don't care about what people say or think. At the end of the day, you are who you are and no one can change that. I just study at school and work even though the majority of them mess about.

Though the thing I was try to remember is that when I'm finally 18 if can get away from all those people so I don't try to get super friendships. Although the thing I hate is that I've been with most of the people for 3 years now I'm going to stick with them for another 4. The majority is ok but some can be just plain nasty.

So yeah, you shouldn't really let people do that too you though. If you let them hit you without doing anything, then your an easy target for them another time.

You should either fight back and defend yourself or tell someone. Telling us sadly won't get the problem sorted.

A few years now. =/

I don't really know how I could defend myself though since They're a million times stronger than me etc and could really badly hurt me.

They don't beat me up too often though. It's mainly verbal abuse etc. Calling me names, telling me to burn in hell et cetera. I've gotten used to it over all these years though so I don't let it get to me. I've told them to leave me alone etc but they don't listen and just carry on. I've told my form tutor but he just said he would keep and eye on them and not actually do anything. Soooo yeah, any advice?
