Best way of making accurate shapes?

Archive: 7 posts

Sorry if the title is a little vague, and apologies in advance if this is the wrong section, but I'm just wondering what the best way is to make precise shapes. What I mean by this is things like shapes that match perfectly with stickers, where you can't even tell what material it is because all you can see is the sticker (there's no edges or anything poking out). Is this the result of a lot of patience with the corner editing tool, or is it better to carve the edges of using the delete function? Or is there some tool that makes material take the same shape of the sticker that I don't know about ? Thanks in advance!2010-07-31 21:46:00

Yes I'm afraid it is just down to a lot of time and effort ( for me at least ) with the corner edit tool. You can also combine it with using different shapes to cut parts away and then tidying up with the corner edit. That's what I do anyway. I find the teardrop and the heart very useful for cutting away curves. If you need to get in a very thin bit you can always make a very thin needle like piece first and use that to cut away by copying it.
I don't know what other people do but I use glass for cutting away. Partly because it keeps it's shape ok and partly because you can see through it which helps to see what you're doing. The best tip I can give is to enlarge the piece you're working on quite big to start with and then when you're done shrink it down again. When you do that it's easier to work on plus it looks smoother once it's shrunk down again. Be careful not to go too small though because with intricate shapes some parts tend to distort or disappear completely.

So yes basically it's just a csae of putting in time and effort to cut your shapes. It's quite therapeutic at times though too. Good luck with that anyway.

By the way if you want some ready made ones there are a few levels out there that give them away. Can't remember which offhand but you should be able to find some by putting 'cutouts' in the search.

Another trick is to also paint the whole thing like black or a complimentary color to the sticker first. The material doesn't show as much like on the edges etc.. especially if you don't trim it as close as you want. A trick my girlfriend TheCountessZ shared with me! 2010-07-31 22:23:00

All of what they said +(just in case you don't know) if your cutout isn't too small, change the material to rubber. It gives the best visual quality to the sticker.2010-08-02 12:06:00

What i can tell you is that you need to know how to use it, just by playing around with it. when you start out, put the sticker or what you want to cut out. before you make it bigger, cut out as much as you can without going into the sticker. (you dont need to, it just makes it go faster.) now make it very big, so when you zoom out you cant see the whole sticker. then useing the corner editer you can get much closer to the outline. when you got it like you want it, it will look very rough, but when you shrink it back down, it looks alot smother. if you keep trying, it will be aLOT easer.2010-08-02 15:45:00
