The sad tale and tragic of a lost boy who becomes a hero. Cinematic story sections, dangerous dojo sessions, thugs to battle and a little insight into the inner turmoil of a familar hero.

all feedback appreciated and reciprocated

thanks dude! haven't seen the Orphan movie but plan on checking it out. It's based upon another well known hero mythos. Most folks realise who about a third the way in. Give the cut scenes a couple of secs to trigger teleport, the speech content is pretty low for a story level.2010-07-31 21:30:00

Very nice level! The visuals were nice and complemented the story well, my favorite bit of the visuals was probably the character models of the main character, oh and the punching effects. The story was amazing, you managed to convey so much in such a short level, you really felt that you understood what he was going through.

Great level, 5 stars and a heart.

Since you've already played all of my levels you can just copy over this feedback and post in my level thread, the link to which is in my sig.

Thanks for the feedback. The main purpose of this level was to convey a story and examine the inner angst of the central protagonist, different in nature to most hero levels on LBP. Hence the cinematic type feel. The playing sections mainly revolve around a training dojo and combat with some thugs. Will try and add a little more action soon. Will be sure to check out your garage levels soon.

I thought the level was pretty good. It had decent visuals especially the objects, they were very detailed. The gameplay was meh, nothing I haven't seen before, but than again there is like 2.5 million levels, so I expected that. What I really liked ( and what gotcha another star ) is the writing, it felt like you were playing an interactive book, very nice.

Overall I give It 4/5, nice level, just wish some of the the landscape was as detailed as the objects.
By the way, thanks for checking out my Bug Survival lvl!

Thanks for the feedback. The main aim of the level was to convey the story and I'm glad you thought the writing to be the strongest element, often a neglected part of story levels. Many a time I've played visually brilliant story levels that are really let down by poor or overly wordy dialogue. Quite a tricky element of level making to get the hang of, making the words poignant and effective.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you liked the visuals and story. Level length is a tricky one to judge, I'm a fan of story levels but even I find myself clicking through overly long too wordy levels. Best keep things succinct and relevant rather than drawn out beyond the limits of peoples patience. A tad confused why you find the story a postive and the fact it's about Batman a negative? Not a fan of the dark knight? Or were you missing the subtlety of the level design wherein you only realise the orphan is in fact Batman when he is revealed a third the way into the level, earlier if you pick up on the clues.2010-08-02 23:52:00

Very Cool level, I am a huge batman fan and feel you tell the story very well. Great Atmosphere and design for the most part, Ireally like the way the enemies look at move.

Unfortunately, I cannot finish this. For some reason, after the thugs I just keep reaspawning into a cloud of gas. Too bad.

My only other issue is although the 3D glitch has a great looking effect, the layers get slightly confusing. But for the most part you get a great effect with it.

Hi EnochRoot - it's a long time since I met you in a forum (littlebignetwork). I will play your level as soon as possible and post a freedback here. If you find some time and for F4F-reasons it would be nice if you check out my newest creation: Color up your life.

Glad you enjoyed this level as a real Batman fan. Had a look at the final teleport spawn point and ajusted things so all those jumpy rabbit types won't trigger the wrong one.
Really enjoyed making this one and examining the origins and angst of the central protagonist. I've played some great action adventure Batman levels on LBP but not one with the story as the main emphasis.
The level seems to be getting a lot of comments such as " This is Batman not Orphan" etc. from younger players who don't understand that the central idea is as you play through you discover the heros identity. In many ways Bruce Wayne is the worlds best Known orphan (apart from Annie and Oliver..and I'm not making a level about those two urchins!) and his alter ego, Batman is the ultimate victims wish fulfillment fantasy of empowerment in the face of tragedy.

@ (_NEO_) Hey dude! It will be a pleasure to try your level..unfortunately I don't think i've improved since the last time you played my level..still getting the weird tags!

Hi EnochRoot -

so, in the meantime I had a chance to play your level :-) I have to admit that I didn't read your thread-description so I was suprised by the fact that this one is a story-level - hehe, I expected it to be a plattformer (rofl)...

Well, what I really loved was the graveyard - woha... the thunder-effect was pretty cool - maybe you can add a little thunderbolt that appears when the color-scheme changes to black/white and back to color!? The church felt a bit empty for my taste - you have used the 3d-glitch, right? this scene would improve when you put in some benchs - do you have some thermo left??? :-) Then comes: the training dojo - :-) the characteres here are nice but are also very easy to beat (guess you wanted them to be easy, right?). The mansion looks very cool too: the secret-door behind the book-shelf, the books on the table - very cool stuff and what I really loved: the following characters - the bad boys look very impressive and underlines the atmosphere of this level. There was that scene where you have to grab the batarang: well, at this part I first thought that something broke: there was a big "crack" and after that I could see a piston that holds the batarang... ok, after a few seconds I grab that thing and I flew down :-)

I'm honest when I say, I'm normally not a big fan of story-levels, but I liked it very much, even that there have been areas that seemed to be a bit clean and empty due to missing stickers and deko-stuff! Nevertheless I gave this level :star::star::star::star: and a <3 - you put a lot of effort into this one, no doubt. And it was very entertaining with a good atmosphere! Hope my new level COLOR UP YOUR LIFE will entertain you as well :-) have fun while playing EnochRoot !

Hi EnochRoot,

This was a very good story level. You really conveyed the emotion of the protagonist well, without making it overly wordy. There were great cinematic effects that help to convey when you are in his memories vs. the real world. The effects for punching the villains were also a neat touch. And looking through the mask was a very creative. Well written and designed.

I did have a similar comment to ____NEO_____. On the bat symbol attached to the piston, it is meant to be visible? I was guessing maybe so, and it was supposed to look like a device for rappelling. A winch might look more fitting, but that may not be possible if you have to control where the player lands. Also, somehow it managed to squish me the first time I grabbed it. I also thought some more detail in the background of the church and the stairwell in the mansion would be a nice add if you do have thermo left.

But those are minor points. This was a great story level. I really enjoyed it. :star::star::star::star: and <3. Excellently crafted!

Thanks for the feedback folks!

@ (_NEO_) LOL! sorry to make you play a story level! I feel the same way about survivals but I am always pleasantly surprised when I play a good one.
Glad you liked the atmosphere and characters, really help set the tone of the story.
The rappeling device had to be a stiff piston rather than winch, the winch lets pesky little sack varmints swing into areas they aren't supposed to, next thing you know you have loads of pictures uploaded of your backstage areas where your hard working little stagehand sacks are having a drink and well earned cigarette break!
Took your and Pennydogs advice on board and added some more decoration to those specific areas, helped enhance the sets without effecting tone, thanks.

@pennydog gratifying you caught the subtle interchanges between past and present, meant the effects combined with the dialogue worked as intended. Some folks miss the punching effect as they rush on in search of bubbles.

thanks for the feedback : )

+ Nice intro.
- Magic mouths should be capitalised?
- Can see a block of dark matter during the first camera move.
+ Bats.
- Hazards are hard to idenifty which layer they are in due to layer glitch and camera angle.
+ Books / holograms.
+ Batman!
- Missed the action cutscenes after dispatching an enemy on the ground level (combination of camera angle and me running right). Add a cutscene magic mouth to them perhaps?
+ What was the music at the end? "The Battle on the Ice"?

Yeah, nice story level there. The Batman model looked very good.
Biggest annoyance was the training on the extra layers. I would add a three layer strip of horizontal "carpet" or something to help guide the player.
Will be looking forward to your story levels in LBP2 I hope?

Thanks for the feedback Midnight and XKJZ.
Great suggestion to include the 3 layer gguiding carpet strip, I'll look into implementing it today. Glad you enjoy the story element too, my favourite part of making levels is coming up with an interesting original story concept. Here's the LBP.me link if anyone fancies a queue trip, yuck!..sounds like an ear swab!

I hope to be publishing a sequel with even more cinematic vibe thanks to the movie tools on LBP2.
