Very big thx to Gilgamesh for uploading a video of the level-walkthrough :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3o8iwEW2Z4

The Story:
The evil scientist “Dr. Crazyus” is about to steel all the colors from your planet by using his terrible “color-suckinator-machine”. It’s a pitty that you’re to late to stop him from finishing his plan but it should be possible for you to steel one of the evil machine’s portable paintguns and by using it, you’re maybe able to reverse the damage that Dr. Crazyus has done. When you’re back on your planet you encounter a wasteland of colorlessness - the evil machine has sucked out all the colors and everything is just black and white now. It’s your misson to bring back color, joy and fun to your world and at least to your life. Because a life without color is a boring thing  So what are you waiting for? Grab your paintinator and show this evil Dr. Crazyus, that he has made his plan without your lion-hearted boldness to save your planet from a nightmare. It’s up on YOU

Some personal notes:
I used a very unique method to change the color of the surfaces and I think it’s a pretty cool and very unexpected effect. I’ve never ever played a level where the creator has used this effect in the way I did. Well, with 2 million levels out there I can’t be sure, but it would be great to be the first one who came up with that. I hope you like and love it the way I do.
There is not as much plattforming than I had in mind before starting this project, but the thermo-intensive intro-sequence and the story-introduction took away 60% of the thermo. At the end I’m running out of space to build a larger plattformer but maybe this will be possible in a second part…..! So all in all, this level should be handled and rated more like some sort of concept level instead of a true plattformer :-)

Please enjoy your journey through “Color Up Your Life”! Thanks in advance!

I want to thank Tobsn08, Mnniska, TheCooper, BasketSnake, Lightmare, Sabre, Omega-Slayer, QuiecheFriendzy and all the others for betatesting and feedback. Special thanks to BasketSnake for his help with logic and Lightmare for his info about the (never heard before) 160hour bug.

PS: Due to the 160hour-bug there are some little issues: in one scene you still here a thunder-sound after something is destroyed, but there is NO speaker that could create this sound it sounds a bit odd in that scene but there is no way to change it – and I tried -without doubt- everything possible. There is also little issue that affects a piston rarely. It could be possible that a message-box will close after only a few seconds.

The Goods:
+ Very, very unique effect of letting the player bring color back without the use of any lighting effects.
+ for the platforming that was there, it was very polished.
+ Level and character design was superb.
+ Not giving up when you got the 160 bug and fighting through to bring this level to us
+ Nice boss.

Improvements:
- The boss was a little easier than I expected. Maybe, if possible, make him move left and right for more of a challenge.
- Dont use so much thermo on the intro next time

Love this level though. It makes me think of new ways to use what we have to make something new. You earned these 5 stars and a <3! Now for part 2

Thx for the first feedbacks - I'm glad you like it that much :-)

The boss turned out to be very easy due to the thermo as well - as I come to that point in the creation process I have to admit that I didn't wanted it to be a "real" boss-fight (or at least "A" boss fight) because I had only 5 or 8% thermo left... but I tried to make it a bit funnier and so it ended up the way it looks :-) I should edit my first thread and rename it from "boss" to "final scene" LOL :-)

Thx for the 5star rating so far ... I apreciate :-)

No problem. You earned those 5 stars and heart. You went through the same thing I went through on my level so I know how frustrating it was. Glad you were able to move it to a fresh level patch.2010-08-01 15:37:00

As everyone else has stated, a nice use of the paintinator and a nicely put together level - the boss was pretty easy but understand why. :star::star::star::star::star: and <32010-08-01 16:52:00

Great work mate!
I really like the level.
It's very simple but fresh and with new ideas!
In its way it's another level that pushes LBP boundaries further.
Great work!

innovative! 2 million levels and you found a way to innovate! that's quite a succes in the ending stages of LBP1 .
People, if you want to experience something new you should try out this level.
Sure bossfight wasn't the most epic I have ever seen (lol) but was a surprise though, cause i havent seen it before

Awesome level. I really like the lighthearted comic style.
Solid visuals with the paintmachine, the rotating paintgun dispensers and the strange creatures popping up.

Your innovative mechanic where you paint colour back on the world is great. I for one would be very interested to know how you create this effect. Maybe do a tutorial and call it the Neo/effect...
Gameplay is simple, but still very entertaining. Bubbleplacement is very good, adding an extra level of complexity for those willing to hunt.

Suggestion
On some parts near the paintmachine in the beginning, you can switch layers and disappear in the background. Maybe close of that layer.

All in all this is a fantastic level, with an genuinely innovative gimmick. 5 stars and hearted. I?d like to see a part 2!

If you?re up for F4F, it would be great if you could take a look at one of my latest levels, 5, 6B or 7b.

the boss was pretty easy but understand why.

Yeah :-) it's is very very easy, and I have changed the description "boss" into "ending-scene" alreday hehe... there was not enough thermo left to make a boss more complex and I really apologize for it. So I tried to make something with a bit of fun in it :-)

That's a great compliment Omega Slayer - thank you very much for that !

Thanks Tobs!!!! That's what I hoped before publishing it - maybe there is another level with such a concept - but I highly doubt it at this moment (and I at least highly hope that it is LOL). To be the first one with that style is a nice thinking :-)

Thx for the detailed feedback! You're right: the bubbleplacement gives you a "big" chance to get some good mulitpyers due to the fact that you can "move" some bubbles with your paintinator to some other bubbles :-) I get a score about 13.000 and there is more to get.

And yeah: the simple gameplay is the most dissapointing thing to me because in the first process I wanted it to be a level that will focus on plattforming. With the thermo problems which I described this wasn't possible anymore so I decide to make it a bit more on the fun side. There are tons of ideas for plattforming in my brain so a second part is possible! The layer-prob that you mentioned is something I am aware of, maybe I can fix this... I will try

The "Neo-Effect" - wow pickled-punk - I never saw it that way :-) I feel honoured by that - I apreciate! The color-back effect is very simple to be true - everyone who wants to know how it work can send me a pm and I will share it with you....

Thank you all for these great feedbacks and suggestions. Hope there will be more who will give it a chance!

That was a very cool level. The reverse colour effect is intriguing and you used it to great effect. On top of that, though, the level just oozed charm, with gorgeous, vivid colours and fun shapes. I especially liked the dog shaped ?blocks?. The character work was excellent too. Dr Crazyus looked just like a mad colour-guzzling scientist should and the weird and wonderful creatures who popped up along the way were fun too. Cool set piece pictures at the start too ? the colours trapped in cages picture was really well done.

A little more platforming would have been nice but I totally understand why it was not possible. Anyway, as you said in an earlier post, there?s enough to keep you entertained trying to get bubble combos along the way and the amusing dialogue helps too.

Well done on creating something so original. I look forward to seeing more of this effect.

Sorry for the delay in getting my feedback to you, better late than. . . well here it is.

The intro is great, a good touch of wow and artistic. It was a lot of fun to watch but as I replayed the level a time or two it really felt long and completely un-skippable as I just wanted to get into the level and play.

The level looks good in a off-beat, mildly organic way. The mix of layer shifting and light platforming is fun and the fun logic and paintinator gimmicks add to the variety. The fold-out bridge was a treat to watch and you've done a lot in the first half to set the story and characters with good cut-scenes. (Though the pop-up person/creature/thingy doesn't seem to fit in with the story or the level. -huh-)

After the long-ish cutscene there is a hole in the rear layer that the player can fall into and not really get out without suiciding. In the rear layer underneath the sticker of the yellow caged color is an indentation that a person can walk, left I think it was, and drop down under the fore-layer and walk around a little bit.

There is another section near the end that I think you can jump out of the level from though I didn't try it at the time. (I didn't want to hurt my highscore!)

After you beat the boss you are free to walk around. You can jump on top of the center cog of the right rotating paininator and jump up on to the rear layer cloud piece. From here you can jump off to the right into nothingness. (Maybe gas, maybe a different part of the level, who knows.)

I think that you've done on your character models as they give off a good impression of personality and express whatever emotion they are supposed to be emoting. Good work.

I really liked hunting for the secret spots of score bubbles and you've got a few good ones that really felt like a reward and reason to play the level more than once. The pinball spot is a great one and at first I thought I found another unintended hole in the level but was pleasantly surprised.

The push button that is suspended in the ceiling at the grab elevator just before the boss can be activated by jumping and grabbing right next to it and swinging forcibly into the switch. You may not have intended players to open the door this way, but since it doesn't hurt those who find the other method of pressing the button this probably isn't a problem.

I like the level gimmick with the paintinator, it gave a better use for the paint gun than I've seen in a long time. Nothing new mechanic-wise but a good take on the genre.

The flow of the level, in terms of being a paintinator/platforming is a bit choppy with the different cut-scenes and this does take away from me wanting to play the level over and over as I just can't get in and play as I would a dedicated platforming level but I think that the atmosphere, plot, bubble hunting and characters make up for this a bit.

I had fun playing the level. I may be able to provide better feedback after I play it a time or so more but I had to hurry to get in the few plays I already did before I left for a business trip.

Cheers.

Thank you Lockstitch for your F4F-comment! :-)

@Trindall:

Thx for this outstanding detailed review of my level. After you were able to play this I was already able to fix some issues here: the whole in the laboratory-ground was one of it - right now it's not possible anymore. Also I fixed a little issue when more players come to the laboratoy - if the players had a great distance between them the Dr. didn't came out in the first version of this level.

The option to jump and grab at the button-whole to activate the secret room wasn't planned :-) The first who get it that way (while beta-testing) has been Tobs - first I was a bit dissapointed, but at least I thought it is a nice alternative way to get this button pressed :-)

The bubble hunts that you mentioned are really a nice bonus in here: with good collecting and shooting them into bigger groubs you are able to get bigger multiplyer and (even that I didn't tested it yet) I think that a score in the 14 to 15k area is possible.

And yep: The intro-scene with the "ticker" and the introduction sequence in the laboratory are a bit long, without a doubt, but I had my reasons to do so: specially the dialog in the laboratory gave me a hard time of decision-making: I just didn't want it to be like 9 little speach-boxes pop out at the same time. I know this is a bit long but I think it's a bit more, well, "stylish" :-)

And yes: it's not a real plattfomer, I think it's more like a new-concept-level - if I will make a sequal I 100% will focus on pure plattforming, because this has been my first plan before starting this level - but after the thermo shrinks more and more I had to let this plan go when I came to the "planet's surface" itself.

Thank you again for this awesome detailed feedback Trindall! Very nice and you put a big effort in here!!!

Just played it and here is my feedback! (:

The intro was really great. Liked the work with the emitted letters and the sounds.
The first part of the level looks very neat. Good choice with the metal.
Gameplay is great, too. Good idea using the paintinator in this way is fun and makes me laugh!
What is funny, too, is the dialogue! Had to laugh a few time reading them!
Over all the level is really funny and it is brilliant in that way. I think if it was to serious, it wouldn't be as good as it is now!

Some little negative points:
If you've finished the intro you fall down into the first "room", just next to the checkpoint. Now I didn't see this checkpoint and ran forward. As I came to this yellow square thing, I didn't know if I should put off the paintinator or not, so I didn't grab the sponge hanging there and jumped straight into the blue gas beneath. And because I didn't acitvate the checkpoint in the cave-like part I spawned at the intro.
After punching myself for doing this, I realised that I may grab the sponge! So, maybe you could mark the sponge so you think, you have to grab it!

Over all a really fun and great level! Thanks for making this! (:

:star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 for your level! (;

Would be glad if you could give me a feedback on my 'Put Your Jetpack... Off!'

Great level! I haven't seen this idea before either! The idea of gameplay was great but it didn't make gameplay repetetive. Boss was cool also. It might be confusing to shoot platform with yellow paintgun and then it turns blue but... it doesn't matter. I decided to give it 5 stars. This is your best level so far NEO. Hey man! I played this level a while ago and it was great! I loved the colorfull theme you had and everything. Awesome job. And I have absolutely no idea how you got that whole color thing to work with the paintinator. How you shot the ground a few times then the color came back, my head hurt cause I was trying to think of what you could have done to get that effect.

Great job man!

thank you guys for those great feedbacks! :-)

From the tech-side and the gameplay -in my view- my Talocan lvl is my best creation so far - but I love Color up your love due to this color-up effect.

@eagerneph: if you want me (or someone else) to share this effect with you, just send me a pm-request - i will show you how it works :-) but it is by all means extremly simple. To quote jackofcourse' level: "pretty simple" :-)

So, thx again for your high ratings and great feedbacks. I'm glad that you like it that much.

Thanks for the feedback of "The Hero Chronicles LV5 Glacier Volcano". This is a very fun level. The usage of the paintinator is brilliant, especially against the boss and it's very cool the way the sponges changed from black and white to color [how on earth do you do that?]. My only suggestion is that i can't hit the outer sponge near the platform that lead's to the boss' area. Overall this level is a lot of fun so I gave it :star::star::star::star::star:2010-08-07 17:11:00

Thx for the nice words JustinArt. Do you mean the sponge to the right side of the plattform? Or The outside sponge of the upcoming element with this little creature? The sponge to the right is shootable from within the little room to the right - you can shoot up in the air there - but you won't get a score bonus for that element. And the outside of the upcoming stuff: there are two ways: jump up when it appears so you instantly make a layer-switch if your timing is right - and on the left side of the middle layer you can jump up on the sponge with the eyes on it. From there you can jump on the backround layer and shoot the outside element. :-)

I send you a pm how I made this effect...

Great level ( NEO ),
always interesting when a creator comes along with a new technique (paintinator recolourising) and even better when they actually apply it to good use within a fun level.
Nice concept and structure to the level with the colour theme being central to the plot. Liked the intro but like Trindall I found it overly long on succesive replays but on first viewing it was very impactful. The characters were excellent and the level really took off when I arrived in DrCrazyus' ship, really liked the decor and background here.
Then it was off to restore the colour to the world below using your unique technique. The Boss battle was excellent and satisfying, for me the highlight of the level, Dr Crazyus stole the show.
Not an out and out platformer, more an adventure level demonstarting some original ideas. The use of the paintinator to produce the same result again and again did seem a little repititious, maybe if there were more different effects generated with extra spot sound/light effects. I liked the use of the blue scale material but wondered if the multi hued scale material would have added even more colour if used. On beating the boss I would have liked to have seen more of a technicolour explosion of light and colours, the use of the black background made things seem dark, black being the absence of colour. Maybe experimenting with the global lighting tool/colour effects etc. and emitting more colourful fauna and flora would result in a fitting crescendo to a level about restoring colour.
Overall a brilliant level and certainly a must play demonstration on how to successfully implement and have fun with an innovative new idea.

What a brilliant and fun way to Color Up Your Life!

Your level is ingenious and imaginative Neo. The intro is precisely executed and the visuals throughout the level are impressively designed and lavish with colour.

If you were looking for a mad scientist, Dr. Crazyus would fit the bill perfectly, he was insane! I loved his evil 'color-suckinator-machine! What a brilliant and unique concept and bringing colour back into the world using the 'Neo-Effect' was absolutely fascinating and will surely become renowned!

Well done on producing an extremely polished and charming level.

Thx EnochRoot for your honest feedback - When I wouldn't have made the intro so thermo-cracking huge (the ticker is a thermo-screaming monster) this level would have been a much better plattformer and there would have been some more nice color-expolosions too - specially at the boss scene... :-) but I can't change anything 'cause the thermo is at max :-/

First- The intro was brilliant. I played this level with my son and we were both amazed by the opening sequence. Second- The idea of using the paintinator to re-color the world is also brilliant. Finding a way to actually do it is sheer genius.

We had a blast painting the level and each other all the while being amazed at the cool affects, effects and hidden surprises. We did run into a glitch at the end the first time we played through though. We ended up going off the left side of the platform with the scoreboard and fell back down to the area where you get on the lift to go to the boss battle. Couldn't regenerate a lift and so had to start the level over.

Oh, thx for this reply - thought the thread would be retired :-)

Thx for playing and I'm happy that you had a blast during the play. It's all about fun and if I had more thermo (and if I didn't had made such a thermo-killing intro-sequnce LOL) there would have been much much more plattforming as well - the plattforming was defenitely way to short in that level :-)

Well, the glitch you mentioned: I saw a screenshot in my level's pics where a guy stands upon a big lamp below the scoreboard-section - well, I don't know how he gets there - I never was able to get there in play-mode .... hmm, that's weird.... Tig-W (wrecking-ball survival) once told me, that there are some guys that have some glitches in his level as well, but only these guys and nobody else... that's really strange... I will take a look at this section asap - I don't know if I will find the time before my holiday (mallorca - yeahaw^^) but I will check this out .... thx for this info Randomcheese!!! Btw: I will check out the level that you've linked in your sig - looks brilliant... :-)

Not sure if you need more feedback on this level, but I gave it a spin today. I was a very fluffy level. I loved the flow and and the world you created adn stuck to.I am not a big fan of anti matter art because how itover smooths all corners...but it fit the level. The bridge at the start was fun, the boss having a chat with you...but the one instance the voice changed I thought someone else was in the room...and if someone else was in the room then I thought right. The world below was very rounded, some of the areas seemed a little too blobish, but it still worked. The part with the hidden area below was a good touch, but all the bubbles right before that area fell into the toxic gas and I died trying to get them...most likely losing more points than I would have gained getting them. THe boss was well done, the two lower areas you detroy and opened up seemed like I was supposed to shot in them, but I only did no on one side and I beat him. Great level...the world sprining to life is always a good touch. So not sure if any of that helps, but if you needed more thermo you may beable to touch up on the rounded bits to use in other areas...but not that you need to.2010-09-27 06:12:00

Thx for the suggestions celsus ! It's allways great to see constructive critcism - that's the only way to improve! I appreciate that very much! Well, I have to admit that this level is more some sort of a concept-level to try out this new paintinator-effect. I wanted to add more plattforming but in the end I've been totally running out of thermo. I tried to use the corner-edit tool to smooth some of the stuff you mentioned, but this had no effect on the thermo :-/ btw: it's not dark matter ;-) it's the black rubber material :-) The boss: don't know exactly what you mean: the two underhang orange blocks with the paintinator-switch: you have to shoot them and in
this tiny holes above these blocks there are two brains - I have to admit that you can hardly see them, but in the end I had no chance to change anything - I can't add one single sticker without overheating the thermo :-/ So I think that you -without noticing it- shoot the brains...

So thx again for this feedback celsus! just great!

What happens if you add corners? I managed to make an entire level (albeit very simple) with the thermo maxed because of switches. Then I have another level that I can't touch anything because it will overheat and stay over heated even if I rewind and then start deleting tons of the level. I have had stickers vanish from over stickering an object...and the annoying stickers from nowhere appearing all over an over stickered level...but I have yet to have a sticker cause overheat...it would be cool if on the next one they had thermos for each thing so it could be easier to plan the levels.2010-09-28 06:03:00

This was a pretty fun and interesting level.

I liked the premise of coloring up the world with a paintinator; I don't think I've seen anything like that before. It was very ingenious. The platforming and boss weren't particularly challenging, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Here is a video I recorded of the level:

Cool stuff!
