On the 27th of July it was my birthday, and so logging on to the forums I was greeted with a message telling me that if I sent CC a private message titled "today is my birthday", I would be automatically given 500 experience points. Of course, I messaged CC in the way I had been instructed, but now today is the 31st of July and there's still no sign of any "birthday present". Has this happened to others on their birthday, or did someone play a practical joke on me?

Yeah - I got that message on my birthday. And I replied as instructed. Of course at the time of my birthday, VBXP was still in limbo, so I didn't expect to be able to see any fluctuations or evidence of such. Whether or not it was ever actually applied, I cannot say.

It is a valid message, but maybe he missed it or you he still hasn't gotten to it since he is on vacation.

I received that message, but we hadn't had XP for two or three months by then so I never bothered doing it. I'm sure if the offer is still valid it will be given when CC is back in the comforts of his own computer.
