Need ideas for: "Future Monkey City"

Inspired by my superhero costume Super Monkey X (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=29670-Super-Sack-Costume-Creation-Contest!&p=541853#post541853), I have started working on a new level. Setting: The premise is a futuristic city created by monkeys. Hence the name "Future Monkey City". Visually I'm thinking something similar to the Metropolis levels (http://www.desktopexchange.com/gallery/albums/Game_widescreen_wallpaper/Ratchet_Clank_Metropolis.jpg) in Ratchet & Clank, with interesting looking buildings combined with patches/areas of grass/vegetation for some contrast. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbnhAoCPzIopBJQM:http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r263/FlameDragon07/metropolis_vista_435x326.jpg&t=1 I made a similar thread to this for my Calvin & Hobbes level a while back, and the flow of ideas from the community helped me keep up the momentum while building. The focus of this level is GAMEPLAY. I aim to have the player always active, and not have him just run pass a lame waterfall. At point of writing I have created: - A powerplant building that you have to scale to turn the power back on. - A grindrail glass/power cable you slide down, jumping over rotten bananas and exposed cables. - Slippery angled platforms (from banana peels) to hop across. - Vertical transport tubes (elevator) - Floating banana tree islands (no gameplay value yet, possibly climbing across a rope?) Oh, and I have the standard rotating sponges, but I need to encorporate them into the city/monkey theme somehow. Other ideas to create: (to do) - Swinging vines/cables suspended by building bridges - Climbing around the buildings, inside and outside. - Poop hazard! Dodge poop while ??? - Banana as a distraction. - Ride with the monkey on a bike. - Planet of the apes/statue of liberty parody gag. - Out of control robo-replicator machine? - Grab/treasure boxes for bubbles. - Shifting conveyor belt. Story so far: "All the bananas in town are disappearing! Who (or what) would do such a thing to Future Monkey City?!" I'm looking for ideas on how to "monkify" the city. You can swing from cyber banana trees with bananas on them Then you land in the monkey car! Then you meet some thugs and you have to fight them then too many come and you go into a dramatic chase scene and escape in HOVERCARS Then when little big planet 2 comes out you can use grapple hooks for things and it would be super futuristic! How about some bamboo technology? Like helicopters made of a few barrels with banana propellors. And if you want to "monkify" the city, make more stuff look like bananas. Instead of "flying cars" you can have vines suspended between the building with monkeys swinging on them. And I'm not sure what the story of the level is like, but you could have propaganda posters with monkeys that say "ook." And you could throw in some red girders (possibly pixelly) as a reference to Donkey Kong. are the monkeys with you or against you? if they are against you, and you have a fight scene with a group of monkeys, maybe you could make a play on the fact that monkeys aren't very smart. Like they are easily distracted, so you can have a banana shooter/tosser to lure them away from you while you accomplish some task. it would be pretty funny to have monkeys that are advanced enough to build a city, yet still dumb enough to be distracted by a banana. it would also be pretty funny to have a car chase scene through a residential monkey area. like, monkey cops are chasing you in their car, and during the chase you pass by shocked civilian monkeys who were mowing their lawn, getting their mail, shopping at the grocery store, maybe your car knocks over a fruit cart of bananas, etc. | 2010-08-04 00:51:00 Author: pennydog Posts: 74 |
Great ideas so far! For some clarification: - This is for LBP1 (not LBP2). - You play as a superhero monkey. - The world is populated by good and bad monkeys. - Your suit (powered by friction pads) can blow up certain doors/objects with laser vision. - I'm thinking a bond type villan for the boss/antagonist. How about some bamboo technology? Like helicopters made of a few barrels with banana propellors. And if you want to "monkify" the city, make more stuff look like bananas. Instead of "flying cars" you can have vines suspended between the building with monkeys swinging on them. I never even thought about going that conceptual/cartoony! Sounds like fun to me! The vines sound like good gameplay also. Very cool monkey-suit your wearing now! How about swinging through some trees on the back of a monkey that's swinging from a vine? OH! You could ride on the back of a monkey riding a bicycle. That's always good fun. Sounds coolies! I was planning to add a planet of the apes statue parody in there somewhere. "You blew it up!" lol. a broken cloning machine which keeps spawning monkeys which get in your way on a conveyor belt? (you blow up the machine) Nice idea, I have decided some enemies are robots, so that could work. Some sort of robot replicator machine perhaps. First of all, you could monkeyify all your current obstacles. Maybe instead of swinging vines, swing on monkeys arms. Some of them could grunt and make annoyed sounds and drop you or something. Enemies? Well, monkeys throw things, like previously suggested. Idea for the boss: Giant Mecha Monkey Suit powered by all the banannas that have gone missing around the city, or have like a huge obese monkey on a sort of levitation cantraption (Jak&Daxter hoverboard anyone?) He's so obese, you can kill him by eventually tipping his levitation device and hime falling into some kind of giant mechanized bananna peeler, he comes out a thin, changed monkey who acknowledges his mistakes and turns to correcting his wrong doing, but have the machine sorta lie, to you, so players think they killed him, and then a dramatic reveal of hime alive is shown Some gameplay element suggestions: -Well, some boss monkeys in poo turrets would be sweet, you can kill them, but they shoot "paint" poo at you, you have to kill them from a distance maybe? -I'm thinking something along the lines of donkey kong launch barrels would be cool, sorta like the ones in Sky Factory 2 -Instead of bananns prize bubbles, how about coconut ones? Using a button decoration would be a good idea for one -You could have a "bananna-craft" which you can fly to get from one part of the level to another, maybe like a Gevurah gundam-esque kind? Having a sort of mini "above the skies" battle in the level somehow, sort of like the ratchet scenes where you have a fight in the skies -Haha, having a mgs sneaking part would be cool as well, maybe if you decide to implement some type of "where the boss resides" stronghold that you have to enter, having the distracting bananna bit here would be perfect, they get distracted while you go further into the bowels -Having like some secret areas that hold what I would call a "going monkeys" machine that spits out extra point bubbles for those lbp players aiming for a high score -As for you dillema of having a sponge circle to fit the theme, try aiming to make it resemble a hamster wheel, maybe that might change it to fit better?? You could have a sort of 'gasta' monkey who 'skateboards' around on a banana. It would be pretty cool to have him doing tricks and stuff. If he was the boss, it would be easy to have a multi-stage thing with him sending his minions to attack you before coming at you himself while doing tricks in the air and throwing poo. Just a couple of ideas here: 1.You could have a chase scene in a car and you turn it on autopilot and shoot the engines or tyres of the cars chasing you, that would be a good time to put in some monkey gags, like making one of the cars crash into the Statue of Liberty, causing it to fall over. Or like Darth said, make your car go up pixellated red girders as a reference to Donkey Kong. 2.You could have gaming references as well, like going into a hi-tech facility called APEture Science (Portal). 3.I like damaz10s idea of a Monkey-Mech that gets powered by bananas for a boss. He could have tubes going into a blender on his back that blends up bananas and you have to tale out the tubes and the blender. Thats all for now but I ave plenty more ideas bouncing around my head. I think the mech powered by bananas is a great idea, eaiser to digest than my current story I think. The problem being I'm not that good with bosses. I want something memorable for the end, atm my idea is "platforming around the boss to hit his weak spot" which is ok, but not great. I have time to decide now that LBP2 is delayed, but still not sure ha. Yeah, the wizard of oz reveal did come to me, but I might be using it on another level..not sure if that's even going to be made tbh. - Poo paint turrents sound sweet. I don't like it when paint gets on my costume while playing a level though. So perhaps I could have some non lethal stuff that slows you down. Hmm. Or just use paint balls. Another moral dilemma. - Donkey kong/sky factory barrels. No thanks. I am so sick of those darn things in LBP levels. I will add a red girder somewhere for the fans though. - coconut/dec gave me a good idea! Crate type objects you need to use a decoration on to open them. I was looking for a way for the player to interact further with bonus objects. - "bananna-craft" Yup. Sounds good. I already have a little prototype. I think I'll leave the shooter bit for a LBP2 sequel though, since it will be 100x less annoying to make. - Ah. Good situation to use that distracting element, thanks! - Yup. Gotta have some secret areas! - For those wheels, man, that's a great idea for sackbots in LBP2. That would be so cute. I think for this level, they are just going to be mecanical wheels. I cut some robots I made out in favour of platforming style hazards, but I'll have an experiment around to see if I can combine the two and end up with something I like. Why not give it a "Planet of The Apes" twist where you fall down under the lower level of the city and find some tribes of primitive humans banging rocks toghether, making fire with sticks and scratching their backs with pine barks?
