Master Explorer!

Archive: 4 posts

I don't know if any of you have played La Mulana, i certainly haven't, but in LBP it'd be absolutely brilliant!

For those that don't care to search it's a very Indiana Jones/Spelunky style side-scrolling platformer. Basically you explore ancient ruins, find out about the ancient civilization and their mannerisms that went into building it, and loot the delicious treasure!

All that i know about this game was from a quick flick through a blog, and i was just amazed at how much thought they put into the background story of each civilization, like how their religion, era, building style and materials all contributed to the construction of each temple ruin. That's the kind of depth i'd like to put into my LBP level!

So for my level, i'm thinking a side-scrolling exploration game, with minor RPG elements and tasty treasures! You pick a direction, and walk that way. Finding ruins, exploring ruins, finding treasure and using it to buy your way into new areas.
You can use the treasure to upgrade your explorers membership, which allows you explore in even more dangerous areas! I think that's a nice idea :3

You live with your grandparents and have a massive interest in exploring, mainly the influence of your granddad who used to roleplay adventures with you as a kid. He goes missing for long periods of time on occasions, your grandma tells you he's on holiday. One day though he doesn't come back.
Later in life you receive a letter from your granddad revealing that he's a great explorer and he needs your help. He's stuck in a dangerous part of the world and needs you to follow his footsteps to find him.

Fast forward again and you've joined the explorers guild, with your granddad proudly displayed as the top ranking explorer. Here you go through minor training and you dispatch to your first location, ready to rise through the ranks.

Towards the climax of the game you follow clues to find your granddad, lost deep in a dangerous location living off his endless supplies of biscuits and milk. You offer to escape and go back home, but your Granddad has other ideas, your mission isn't over yet!
As the last part of the game you undertake your Granddads greatest ambition and explore the final ruin as a duo, and eventually find the most treasurey treasure in existence. Back at the guild you both recover and share your spot as the 2 greatest explorers in history!

From there you can always go back and explore ruins you missed for fun ^_^

One of the most exciting things about this for me is how much potential this level(/game) has to be HUUUGGEE.
The level structure could work like this:

I'll try to squish as much into one level as possible. World 1 might just be one big level, branching off and just having the ruins themselves as separate levels.

The gameplay wouldn't be too far from the regular lbp platformer, just with some minor rpg mechanics such as buying a whip (grapple hook) and rising through the ranks to explore further. I'll see what would work once i've got my hands on the tools

One last note, this would be bloody ambitious xD
I'll probably never manage to finish it, but i'll try! And i do think it would be a really really nice series.

At the very least i'll trim it down and make a mini version with a different story. Or maybe make it a community project ^_^

This sounds like an awesome idea.
But will it have the difficulty of La Mulana? That was a really hard, but rewarding, game.

Anyway, good luck, if you make it a community project, i will sure come around to take a look an try my best to help.

I've never actually played La Mulana, i just read a lot about the remake ^_^

LBP isn't really a difficult game in comparison to other platformers so i doubt it'd have the same difficulty. I will try to make it very challenging towards the end though, providing i get that far.

Sketched up some Civ details, and some of their temples ^_^
Most of the sketches are on paper but i redrew some in flash for postablility

This was built by a civ called the Arborites, who had mostly primitive technology and worshipped the forest.
Their temples were built around large trees using mostly wood as building material, and leaves/branches to form a simple canopy.

They were mostly peaceful and didn't give their temple any sort of security, so the only obstacles are natural from the degrading wood. Most of their treasure has been scavenged by other newbie explorers but there's still some up for grabs deep inside the temple.

This civ don't really follow a religion but they hoarded their wealth. Most treasure on the surface has been scavenged but there's rumours of large stockpiles left deep inside the cliffs.

This civ worshipped the earth. They tried to dig a huge well with the belief that they were closer to their god deep underground, then they'd throw some of their treasures into the well to please their god!
The tunnels and bridges going down the shaft were part of the construction since it was never completely finished. They help explorers get as deep as they can to the treasure though!
The tunnels can get extremely dark though, with lots of natural hazards.

There's another civ called the Caelum Kingdom too that worship the sky. They have a pretty cool temple that was built ontop of an Arborite temple, using the huge tree as support. They used a lot of stone to reinforce the old wooden temple and then built towering structures to get as high as they could, with most of the treasures at the peak of the tower.

A similar temple was built at a later date by the 'New Caelum Kingdom' called Heavens Reach. That's basically just a huuggee linear tower that uses much more modern security mechanisms and building techniques, as well as containing much more treasure!
The problem is along with tons of traps the tower is in the process of collapsing, and the treasure you want is at the peak again.

Thinking about adding some secret levels too, like a skyscraper in ruins or an old alien base.

Overall i'm looking to get 4 worlds. The first 3 worlds having 3 temples and 1 secret level each, and then the last world basically being a race to the finish, with one final temple.
That's 13 temples and 4 hubs, possibly a prologue and any one of those could take up more than 1 level. That's 18 levels total o_o
They're pretty scary numbers xD I might need to get help.
