Real way to play-test your level

Archive: 12 posts

If you really want to test your level and make it as "mass" friendly as possible try this:
Either go to "Quickplay" or "Play Online". Basically what you're looking to do is pick up random people that aren't your friends, not unlike picking up a hitchhiker. Usually these players you get matched up with are noobs. Get the players to your pod, (this is starting to sound like a kidnapping lol) and load your level. Most times the strangers don't even realize that you are the creator of the level.

So once you're all in your level, just sit back and let the noobs venture on. Watch them as they pathetically try to jump over a small gap and fail. Observe what they do and see where some areas maybe unclear on what needs to be done. It is really amazing how pathetic some noobs are. I did this with Ice Cream Palace. One time, the knuckleheads that I played with couldn't even figure out how to open the door to get in and almost abruptly quit out. I was shocked to say the least.

But if you don't really care about nerfing your level to appeal to the inept masses, disregard this post. If you try this just for fun (or to depress yourself) share your experiences.

Yeah, I always do this since my friends already know how to what to do. 2010-07-31 03:20:00

It must be great to have this much confidence in your levels, that you can put getting stuck or quitting down to pathetic knucklehead noobishness. Heaven forbid it's just a poorly designed level.

It's a great idea. But if you are paranoid like me. Then I don't even allow some friends into create mode 2010-07-31 08:47:00

Well since you so clearly haven't played the level (at least you want to make it known you haven't) there was a switch at the side of the door to open it. It doesn't get any more obvious than that. Your coming to the defense of noobs is admirable. But perhaps it was a lame excuse to take a shot at me.

To be fair, the door was just an example. You were basically referring to anyone you quick played with who got a bit stuck, who could be a group of 5 year olds for all you know. Considering these people are helping you perfect your levels, I'd have thought you'd refer to them with a little more respect.

I don't want to derail the thread though, your idea's still a good one.

I think its a little unfair that kids get all the blame for being poor players. Is it likely that most of them are the ones that get stuck and quit out of levels? Probably. But that doesn't mean adults can't be unthinking players either. Age is no indication of skill or maturity. Believe me, sometimes kids behave better and have more skills than those that claim to be adults.

As far as treating noobs with respect? That's funny. If you can't make fun of noobs who can you make fun of? Anyway, if I come off as smug in poking fun at noobs, I wasn't trying to be but I'm not sorry. Besides, we are all noobs at some point. So in a way I'm making fun of the way I used to play too.

As far as being over-confident in my level designing: Why then would I create a thread about play-testing? I wouldn't need to play-test if I was that confident. I think I have acknowledged in my post (if poorly) that there are cases when it's the designer's fault for players not knowing what to do. But there are also cases where you just can't help new players that didn't even finish the story mode.

I mostly try to keep my LBP experience light-hearted. I can't help those who can't find humor in what I posted.

I've done this myself in the past and it is very useful for finding problem areas.2010-08-01 16:30:00

I never thought about doing this... ever. Oh the many times this could of came in handy rather than having people spam my level comments saying that the level was too hard without any exact reason as to why it was so hard. 2010-08-01 16:34:00

Rather amusing on my half, I tried this for a horror level I have been trying to make. After a couple of the set Pieces,my tester was showing signs of fear! So much that he quit out before the main scares 2010-08-02 01:58:00

I was uh... Watching some people try COMPLETING the Bunker last night...

They restarted 5 times before quitting. They were at that part with the 2 wheel things that turn 180 degrees, and stuff. They kept dying THERE!

I've never found the Bunker hard to complete, only a little hard to ace.

I would have never known how hard that part is if I hadn't watched them... It was a big surprise actually. I always considered it easy.

I'll try inviting some random people to my levels sometime. Sounds fun.
