Nice idea, and obviously you would need some sort of visual indicator to show how many lives the player had left. I don't think the freedom of "any number" would work without a "lives" gui counter, or a number that changes on the checkpoints. I would like for lives to be global, and not just 4/8/infinite more on each checkpoint. Get 30 bubbles (or prize bubble or something) and you get a new global life. I agree with this. Although I do think you should be able to see some kind of visual indication of lives remaining like midnight_heist said earlier.
