I'll just repost my short rant

The Beatles. You can say "popularity doesn't equal greatness", but I'll be darned if they weren't both. We take 'em for granted now, just like Seinfield, but truth is that back then the were completely ahead of their time. At a time where the farthest we'd gotten in musical experimentation was mostly the Stones, whose first top-20 hit was a Lennon-McCartney composure by the name of I Wanna Be Your Man, The Beatles were pumping out things that wouldn't become mainstream for 10, 20, even 30 years! And they went from just another skiffle-cover band to immortal gods of rock in only 6 years! You guys are saying metal would have come along if it weren't for the Beatles? It would probably come eventually, yes. Did the Beatles, however, accelerate this process? Yes. In October of 1968, the month where Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham formed to become one of the, no, the progenitors of the heavy rock movement, the Beatles released the fruit of the year's work; The Beatles, also known as The White Album, one of their most legendary albums, possibly one of the most legendary of all time. And with it, Helter Skelter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eFJ8GqUyu4
Not to mention Revolution's revolutionary guitar sounds, a technique proposed by Lennon himself, which was released a s asingle from the White Album sessions. Whether you find it heavy enough for your tastes or not, truth is, the Beatles were four supremely talented people who were always 5 steps ahead of their colleagues, with few exceptions. Jimi Hendrix looked up to them, having covered Day tripper, Tommorow Never Knows, and most famously, a live cover of Sgt. Pepper's a week after the album was released. The number of modern artist who draw influence from them and cover them is staggering. The variety of styles they experimented with were vast, rivaled only by their great successor, Led Zeppelin.

Also, they make awesome music which we don't get tired of after 40 years. You have to be good for your work to last that long. The Beatles will be the Mozart, the Bach, the Beethoven of the Rock era. That goes without saying.

Sometimes I think that The Beatles are like Che Guevara. In Che Guevaras' case, everyone wears his shirts and love the Rebellion icon/image that comes with it, but do they know what he's done? No, they just think his face looks cool on a shirt, that's just stupid. To me The Beatles are sort of like Che Guevara because many people, if your a true true fan then power to you, but many people just wear the shirts, and say they like the music just to fit in with the 'Style' if it's even considered a style >> and theres more to this rant but im getting a lil off topic. So yeah that's my view of The Beatles, and I don't like there music. I voted for Metallica, they just kick so much butt. Whiskey in the Jar /wins.2010-07-29 22:43:00

Yes, I also despise those people who wear Che Guevara shirts, because he's a commie psychopath. Lennon was maybe a bit communist at one point, but otherwise, no. Yes, many people just wear Beatles shirts and all because they're posers.

Those that make them any less awesome?

NO.

EDIT: Also, for those of you who asked...

I didn't realize liking the Beatles was some kind of new fad, I mean the band is over 40 years old and I've been listening to them for most of my life because their music is just excellent. I wouldn't subject myself to music I didn't like, in my personal time, to somehow ingratiate myself with the masses & attempt to appear cool, if anything they're much too mainstream to be comparable to a rebellion icon like Che Guevara, I'd say wearing a T-shirt of any early punk band would make for a better parallel. Listening to their music instantly makes me happy & that's as much of an excuse as I need to like them.

I get where you're coming from though, to a degree anyhow, a friend of mine hates Monty Python because when he was in High School he overheard all the "cool kids", or what he perceived to be "cool kids" at the time, talking about Monty Python, so to this day he refuses to watch any of their movies & its to his loss because Monty Python didn't set out to be a fad for trendy kids & poseurs, they just wanted to be funny. But, had those kids been talking about Charlie Chaplin or something else he'd have had the same reaction & it would have nothing whatsoever to do with Charlie Chaplin.

Hey what gives? You forgot to put Guns N Roses in the poll. How can you have a vote without the #1 band.

I mean just look at how cool they are...

I know who Che Guevara is too... he's the guy who looked like Bill Oddie (but I do know who he was, seriously. I'm old)

Anywho... While there are bands I enjoy a lot more than the Beatles, I really don't think there will ever be another band that can contribute to the evolution (or mass consumerism) of popular music and culture to the same extent that the Beatles did - because some of that is due to timing. I love their music, don't get me wrong. I think the nearest approximation in terms of style changing and adaptation (and longevity) would possibly be U2, but they haven't really defined anything different, culturally, than what was already there. They just helped attach a conscience to it in some regards.

Anyhow, I voted for The Beatles. Their repertoire was vast, experimental and brilliantly written and executed and that's a winning combo

Whoa now, back this hate train up.
Before you hang him, research what he really did. Fidel is the bad guy, all Che wanted was to get rid of the Batista regime.
Also John Lennon was very much Communist, so you might want to look Communism up and see what that is. The U.S (and im asuming other capitalist countries too) only show anti-communist/anti-Che propaganda, to create less dissent. Also, even though the hippies called themselves liberals they were mostly communist, Free Love, Peace, understanding, and all that
There are no true communist countries, there never have been, and there probably will never be. The countries that call themselves communist are really fascist, authoritarian, dictatorships, etc, which is the exact OPPOSITE of communism.
But this thread is not the place to talk about such things

Haha, not at alllll, buddy. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone, fan or not, who hasn't heard a good share of their music... it still saturates music culture. Which is testament to their position at the top.

It makes me sad to see the Who losing to linkin park, though.
