The best band ever?

Archive: 76 posts

post your nomination for the best band of all time and after a few pages I will create a poll of the most popular.

(added speeches may help)

So my nomination is...The Beatles.

My speech...Because they are.

Parachute for their soft, meaningful songs.

Maroon 5 for their beats and great, catchy songs.

The Beatles of course!
I don't even really like most of their stuff but they're still the greatest band that ever existed.
They took Rockabilly from Elvis, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry, and turned it into RockN'Roll.
Without the Beatles we wouldn't have the ability to be as open as we are today. The Beatles showed the world that a guy growing his hair longer than 2 inches doesn't make him a delinquent. They gave us distortion where you didn't have to crack the bell of your amp to get it. Without the Beatles there would have been no Hippy generation, no Woodstock, no Hendrix,no Who, no Rolling Stones, Kinks, nor any of the other great bands from that decade. Rock N'Roll as we know it would never have existed.
Every major band from 1962 onwards copied the Beatles.
Metal wouldn't exist without the Beatles.
Rap wouldn't exist today without the Beatles.
Grunge, etc. Thank the Beatles.
Before the Beatles took the world by storm RockN'Roll was just a FAD! The UK had Jazz, got bored, did skiffle for a while, added a guitar,drums,bass.. but it wasn't any more popular than skiffle was. The Beatles come along and BAM, RockN'Roll phenomenon.

The Beatles are the Kings of RockN'Roll
Elvis is the King of Pop
MJ's not the king of anything!

I'd have to say Red

I gotta agree with the Beatles. I don't really listen to them much anymore, but I still love them. And **** if they didn't just pump out good ****.

My favorite album of theirs would have to be Rubber Soul.

true,I meant from a technilogical standpoint though,

The Beatles. You can say "popularity doesn't equal greatness", but I'll be darned if they weren't both. We take 'em for granted now, just like Seinfield, but truth is that back then the were completely ahead of their time. At a time where the farthest we'd gotten in musical experimentation was mostly the Stones, whose first top-20 hit was a Lennon-McCartney composure by the name of I Wanna Be Your Man, The Beatles were pumping out things that wouldn't become mainstream for 10, 20, even 30 years! And they went from just another skiffle-cover band to immortal gods of rock in only 6 years! You guys are saying metal would have come along if it weren't for the Beatles? It would probably come eventually, yes. Did the Beatles, however, accelerate this process? Yes. In October of 1968, the month where Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham formed to become one of the, no, the progenitors of the heavy rock movement, the Beatles released the fruit of the year's work; The Beatles, also known as The White Album, one of their most legendary albums, possibly one of the most legendary of all time. And with it, Helter Skelter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eFJ8GqUyu4
Not to mention Revolution's revolutionary guitar sounds, a technique proposed by Lennon himself, which was released a s asingle from the White Album sessions. Whether you find it heavy enough for your tastes or not, truth is, the Beatles were four supremely talented people who were always 5 steps ahead of their colleagues, with few exceptions. Jimi Hendrix looked up to them, having covered Day tripper, Tommorow Never Knows, and most famously, a live cover of Sgt. Pepper's a week after the album was released. The number of modern artist who draw influence from them and cover them is staggering. The variety of styles they experimented with were vast, rivaled only by their great successor, Led Zeppelin.

Also, they make awesome music which we don't get tired of after 40 years. You have to be good for your work to last that long. The Beatles will be the Mozart, the Bach, the Beethoven of the Rock era. That goes without saying.

Best band ever isn't really something you can say for certain. Favourite band ever i can see, but how do you define the 'best' band ever. The Beatles you can say influenced a lot (if not all) the rock bands that followed... But that doesn't make them the best, it makes them influential...

I'd say Metallica because they influenced a lot of the metal i listen to now. But again, that's influence, not 'best.'

The thing about saying best band (I agree with Alex btw about the influential part) is it is pure, pure opinion. For example, I think LostProphets are the greatest band ever, but this is merely my opinion. To a lot of people, other bands are the "best band ever"

Anywho, I don't wanna get into a super heated discussion over anything, so I'll just walk away and say I think LostProphets is the greatest band ever.....In my opinion of course :3

So noone can say im biased or that i said all that other stuff because they think I like the Beatles:
In all honesty I don't like the Beatles. John, George, and Paul were way better solo imo. But I still have to hand it to them for being the most influential musicians since old monks 100's of years ago who started using notation
If 2billion+ fans and being the biggest influence on everybody after them doesn't make them the greatest, then theres no greatest band ever.

btw,Favorite band is CCR..or the Who, so hard to choose :/

I listened through three songs of theirs and I honestly can't say I enjoyed a second.. screamo is hilarious though

I've always considered The Beatles objectively to be the best. Not sure why. But I don't think there's another band as universally loved and lovable as the Beatles, with good reason.

The Beatles have got too many amazing songs to not be my favourite band! I think most people who say they hate them, have heard very few of their songs. I know when I was younger, I hated them too because I just associated them with Yellow Submarine... It's impossible for me to pick out a favourite song now! 2010-07-29 16:41:00

I agree with you all the way right there. I hate rap and country. Pop is okay, but I'm not a super-fan of it. I like some of the "oldies". But I mainly like Alternative rock from now, and the 90's

I can tell you're new around here, because you'll find that very few teenagers on this forum like pop music, myself included. In fact, a few weeks ago we had a small epidemic of rock appreciation threads. :L

I like Ok, the first band ever, made in the prehistoric ages. They only had one untitled song, which consisted of a bunch of rhythmless neanderthals beating rocks and sticks together, but they're the oldest. Therefore, my musical taste is superior to everyone else's.2010-08-10 04:32:00

ahh well yeah if you include the metal and its subgenres then i guess i do...but then again...most metal is too soft for me too. its gotta be the hardest, heaviest, darkest, most ruthless out there...which would mainly consist of black, doom, gothic and sometimes death metal and some cross overs of course. most of the better stuff i feel is the underground, mostly unheard of stuff....as iv noticed that the more popular it gets, the more toned down it is. i like it extreme

however, one genre of standard rock i do like, just so happens to be 50s rock and roll and rockabilly >_>

When you talk about the greatest band ever, it's a bit of a cliche' to jump to The Beatles.

There is a very good reason for this, as many have stated. It's not about needing to like older bands in order to claim that you understand music, or have fine taste. The simple fact is that most music today wouldn't be what it is without their influence. They paved the way for the likes of The Who, Pink Floyd, and Led Zep, who each crafted sounds that were themselves highly influential, and were taken further as time progressed.
The Beatles were experimental, quirky, bizarre, and revolutionary while at the same time being sincere, uplifting, inspiring, and most shockingly of all, mainstream. I didn't live in their era, so I can't claim to know how it worked, but this combination is still extremely hard to strike today... For a band to have done it 40 years ago and still have new generations discovering and digging their sound is an achievement that has never been and probably will never be reproduced in music or any other genre to this day.

So when you ask me who my favorite band is, I may say Weezer or The Arcade Fire or Dave Matthews Band or Rusted Root or any other music maker from the various eras before and during my life, depending on where I am in it, or how sentimental I am about my past at that moment.

But when you ask me who the greatest band of all time was, I have to reflect and realize that none of those bands would have roads to drive on if the Beatle's hadn't built them to begin with.
