The Ultimate DLC Advice thread

Some time ago, on the littlebigworkshop forum, I began a lovely thread called the ultimate dlc advice, in which I, along with a couple of reviews from other folk, wrote reviews to dlc packs so people had an idea of how good they were, and if they were on the fence, whether to purchase them or not!

I'm going to post it here too, since the site's full of so many friendly people, in the hope that you and I can recieve advice on which dlc packs are great, and which others are not so great, especially with the newly released marvel ( and incredibles) packs.

Enjoy my reviews folks, quite some effort went into them!

This is pretty good! I like hearing what the player's have to say about the costumes and packs before I buy it. Saves any nasty surprises. 2010-07-28 16:50:00

The Metal Gear Solid level pack was, and remains until this day,one of the most content heavy DLC pack for littlebigplanet. But with this comes a fairly hefty price tag, costing ?4.79/?5.99 in Europe and $5.99 in the US.

As the name would suggest it's a pack orientated around levels, in this case meaning that it not only gives you a bunch of new objects and materials to build level with, but 6 excusive new levels to boot, greatly demonstrating the paintinator power-up.

The levels are a great expansion on the main story mode, with a little platforming, and a lot of shooting. They have a standalone metal gear solid-esque story line, with a littlebigplanet twist, and the collaboration between konami and media molecule is clear. While you don't have to be familiar with mgs at all, it's nice if you have, especially seeing the littlebigplanet versions of familiar faces like Otacon, Liquid and of course Snake. Most of the packs? stickers are based on imagery from mgs games, and whilst those like the yellow and black tape sticker can be put to good use in many levels, about 10 of them are just screenshots of a gekko from different angles, with a white border around the outside, an especially odd decision considering we?re also given gekko skin and armour materials.

It's a shame that the costume pack wasn?t built in, as it would have been nice to experience the pack through a shiny new solid snake sackboy, but you do get the relevant ?Gurlokovich soldier? costume, whom?s skin I used to make my own solid snake costume, along with grey moustache and a blue stickered headband gained by acing one of ?The Island? levels.

Elsewhere the pack continues to burst at the seams with content, with in total 12 new materials, 72 stickers, a bunch of unique decorations and much, much more.

Music and sounds are yet another feature which far exceed any earlier pack, with four new tracks; one of which, the main metal gear solid theme, is interactive. The sound effects are decent too, with the classic ?spotted? alert sound among gekko calls, metal gear rex screams and various jingles from the online bit of metal gear solid four.

At this point, however, this pack continues to delight where so far the other level kits have fallen short, functionality. The paintinator is a great gadget, in terms of expanding gameplay possibilities, it is equalled only by water as a dlc feature. The pack comes with a new switch too, activated when the object it's stuck on is hit by a paintball. It's also the only pack to come with a new hazard; the plasma ball, which is a weightless ball of energy, primarily emitted at speed by enemies with big guns. There?s a ?searchlight? object in there too, which acts as a sensor, but only on the layer which it is on, which has found many uses within community levels.

The pack also offers 12 trophies, but you don't need them to get the platinum, though it's nice to have a few new achievements to aim for.

Final note: I?d recommend the pack to any fan of the game, with a broad range of creation assets and six new levels to play, compared to the single gallery levels found in the monster and history packs. The paintinator is a must-have tool, which for me puts it well above the marvel and incredibles packs. However, since the pack has been out for so long, the materials within are certainly much more stale than they were back when the pack was first released. If you want a spiffing new power-up, the pack is for you, but if you want fresh new materials and stickers, its much more difficult to call.

My score: 9/10 (Remember: If you have the game of the year version, you already have this pack!)

Hopefully I'll be able to upload some more some time soon! Its been quite some time since the thread's heyday, so alot needs editing (I've edited the above article as seemed appropriate) It may even be easier to simply write new reviews, but I'll see what i can do...2010-07-28 17:07:00

Ha! Great idea! This thread was a hit on LBW, so hopefully it will help others out here too!
You might want to get an archive up after you post the other reviews youve done. Personally, I would like to hear the review of the incredibles kit, Im still on the fence about it..

Hello again! If anyone has the incredibles or marvel pack I'd very much like your opinions, hopefully to compile into a review or a couple of reviews. CHEERS2010-07-29 15:45:00
