Boss Battles: What do you like to see in them?
Archive: 27 posts
My long avoided challenge has suddenly met me face to face. The climax of many games. The challenge that seperates the player from the end credits of any good rpg. Boss battles. Its inevitible. Sooner or later you'll face a challenge so hard you'll often wonder "have i bitten off more than i can chew?" I have decided I am going to try and replicate the frustration and determination many gamers experience when they discover they are up against something a bit more... destructive than other minor enemies. | 2010-07-28 09:55:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
So what do YOU, as a player, like to see in boss battles? A variety of attacks? What sort of attacks? Minions? Environmental damage? Powerups? How would you want to attack? Grabbing special parts? Health bar? Hard to reach creature brains? Special summons? Any other ideas? I plan to make this boss epic. I need suggestions and ideas though. So LBPC, hit me with what you got!! Ok will do bro, What i like to see in boss battles is... 1.Give people an idea how to beat it but make them figure out how to beat it by themselvs 2. Not easy but not inpossable but i prefer a boss batle thats hard and fun(that can be hard to make) 3. Lives, dont give people unlimited lives give them about 6 lives or somthing. 4. Make people think they have killed the boss then BAMMO BOOM they transform into a harder boss thats always a (uh oh im dead moment) i love those! 5. have lots of moving parts even make the hole boss move around an arena. 6. a series of atacks then a chance to kill is the best way to beat a boss 7. EPIC DEATH!! i mite have more sugestions but thats all for now hope my ideas help! | 2010-07-28 10:17:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
i like ur fourth point alot! and its probably going to be the hardest to engage. Lives. Yes I like that! Though that can get annoying too. that is a great idea tho an epic death would be nice! im not too sure what ur perception of an epic death is though. explain please | 2010-07-28 10:36:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
Well what i was thinking was somthing like it drops into some lava and dies or its head gets chopped off by a door not just dissapear out of the blue like normal objects. One of my fave boss battles would be the first one on medievil 2 in the musem with the alive dinosour bones, that one comes back to life like 3 times! i also like most of the bosses on Spyro games. i just wish this game had a choice of checkpoints like in other games when you die everything in the level gos back to the same as before you died. | 2010-07-28 10:50:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
Personally, I like bosses who require some thought to work out how to defeat, but that don't require a huge amount of technical ability when the solution is discovered. A perfect example of this would be a Legend of Zelda boss, but then if it were as easy as saying 'make a boss like in Zelda' then everyone would have perfect bosses. I've battled too many bosses in lbp that require the precisely timed and aimed firing of a cannon - this is not particularly fun. Incidentally, I watched a youtube video of a guy that had made an incredible giant squid boss but it seems the level never reached completeion. Aha, found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcciF-h2vIg Real shame it seems to have foundered. But I think it's a good example: the gameplay is relatively self explanatory, it appears to be challenging but not overly difficult, and it's visually really impressive. I keep intending to make a boss battle at some stage but you have to be pretty careful as, if you're going to do it well, it's bound to take up loads of thermo. So, in summary, the two main things I would look for: Visual impact Innovative or interesting gameplay but not technically difficult Simple! | 2010-07-28 11:19:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |
I Would like to see in boss battles a huge boss that the player have to get to the head of the boss and beat it up there some how. The boss is trying to get the player off of him and in the same time kill the player. The other things what i would want to see in boss battles, SketchNZ have mentioned almost every one of them. salieri that vid was awsome. | 2010-07-28 11:19:00 Author: himoks Posts: 734 |
I love that squid level i saw it a while back on youtube, i like your idea too himok. Has anyone else played shadow of the collosus? i think salarie has he made a level about it | 2010-07-28 11:27:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
Salieris that boss what he made was amazing. I almost bought shadow of the collosus, but instead i bought one other game. | 2010-07-28 11:35:00 Author: himoks Posts: 734 |
sketchNZ your points of attention suit my boss level deadly close :o You should try it out, maybe you can find some inspiration there. It has a moment where you think you've defeated it but it comes back with 3 new stronger attacks. I think the most important thing is NOT to make a boss where you have to use the paintinator over and over unless it suits the theme really good. Hey Knocked out i would try your level but by the sound of your post its a ps3 level. | 2010-07-28 11:49:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
4. Make people think they have killed the boss then BAMMO BOOM they transform into a harder boss thats always a (uh oh im dead moment) i love those! I love it when that happens! The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time did that to me in the end with Gannondorf. Just when I thought I killed him, BAM! Epic beast battle! Either that, or when you the boss battle keeps progressing through many boss's in one battle. LittleBigPlanet anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xYlpiAZ8-Y&feature=related Hooray for cheesy endings! | 2010-07-28 11:52:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
Your right, sorry about that :o didn't notice it! | 2010-07-28 16:54:00 Author: Kn0cked-0ut Posts: 562 |
Explosions! When you kill it, synch a bunch of hidden explosions and the brain that kills the boss. Also, add some debris being emitted to add more effect. | 2010-07-28 17:01:00 Author: Silver39 Posts: 1703 |
Maybe you could have a boss battle in a robot suit! I mean, you could deflect certain projectiles and shield yourself against others. Then after you beat the boss, BAM, bye-bye suit, one on one fight. Also, maybe somebody should try a story mode boss blitz! | 2010-07-28 22:05:00 Author: HappyGreenCactus Posts: 247 |
No lives please. I hate hate hate hate hate HATE cheap life systems. See: Nimbus. | 2010-07-28 22:41:00 Author: Voltergeist Posts: 1702 |
here are a few ideas of mine for boss battles: make it quick, small, and *EPICALLY* deadly!!! or make it really big so you have to climb up it's arms or something then get to it's brain and continually attack it but make the boss strike the player with a deadly weapon unpredictably. finally..*MAKE IT HARD*!!!!!!!!!! i mean---hard!! | 2010-07-28 22:57:00 Author: SockFace Posts: 190 |
make the boss strike the player with a deadly weapon unpredictably. Personally, I disagree with this. I think killing the player in an unpredictable manner is just frustrating. | 2010-07-28 23:05:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |
Hey salari have you played shadow of the colossus? i love all those bosses because you have to figure out how to kill them by yourself with a small hint | 2010-07-28 23:19:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
I have indeed. My level 'Colossal Calamity' was partly inspired by it. I'd like to have another go at creating a huge creature, that was my first level and I've learned a heck of a lot since then. | 2010-07-28 23:59:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |

it's nowhere near done yet but do you remember the boss in stroy mode? the big alien with the flingy arms? i am going to re-create that but make it harder, cooler, and trickier to defeat. any ideas on those points ali ? or anybody? | 2010-07-29 11:28:00 Author: SockFace Posts: 190 |
dont use wobble bolts! use normal bolts and chains instead also give it at least 2 different attacks and lastly, use reference images! | 2010-07-29 11:39:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
Oh and another sugestion for a boss, Make it get angry when its life is down like stomp its feet or somthing. or it smashs the walls and rocks fall | 2010-07-29 22:55:00 Author: SketchNZ Posts: 1668 |
