Cave Story

Now published (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=34135-Cave-Story)! I think I said somewhere I wouldn't make any levels anymore until LBP 2 gets release. Well, I lied. I have in fact started a new level, but last night hit what looks like the 160 hour bug, though I haven't even spend 40 hours on it... Anyway, I than decided to have look around my old abandoned projects and am now facing a bit of a dilemma. One of the projects was far better than I remembered and I quickly overcame the little problem that stopped me from finishing it month ago. So now I have two levels I could finish over the next few weeks. This is where you come in; what kind of level would you rather see? A classic temple level, that includes a light puzzle and races. Some of you may have seen it a while ago on the beta servers. Or A cave level, that is a bit more on the difficult side and rather dark. I've published an old version under "Work in non-progress - Cave". | 2010-07-28 08:27:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

Caves is more exciting. | 2010-07-28 10:34:00 Author: Eronninja13 Posts: 637 |
I think caves could open up a lot more opportunity. It could be a scary place with ghosts and monsters. Or a cave in the woods where people have gone missing. Or an old abandoned mine. Or even a passageway to the Kingdom of the Gnomes. So yeah, a cave. Plus, temples have been done to death. A cave would be more original. | 2010-07-28 10:39:00 Author: Plasmavore Posts: 1913 |
Plus, temples have been done to death. Good point. So far there are dragons and some small creatures in the cave. | 2010-07-28 11:07:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Caves, I'm getting sick of Temple levels :/ | 2010-07-28 11:18:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
cave please! :3 It's more exciting and creepy, than a temple level. | 2010-07-28 11:22:00 Author: Jonaolst Posts: 935 |
Looks like it will be the cave level then. It's not going to be particularly creepy or scary, mind you. I'm not a huge fan of horror levels. It's more likely to be a kid friendly cave explorer, though not actually kid friendly as it may end up being a bit difficult. Just need to make sure I include some proper gameplay that is more than just jumping and running. Thanks for the input so far. | 2010-07-28 12:14:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
What if the cave has an underground temple? Ok... Maybe not so much temple as much as a hidden wonder... Like Goonies, but not a pirate ship? Might be a cool twist to a cave adventure. | 2010-07-28 12:46:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |

Maybe not so much temple as much as a hidden wonder... /hides old temple bits that are already in the level No, hidden non-cave-y bits in this cave level. No sir. No, those are just special rock formations that look like a temple. ^.^ | 2010-07-28 12:56:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
It was pretty cool, but I really didn't like the scenery. It looked like it had random chunks cut out of it and din't really have effective use of the layers. I'm assuming this is cuz it's old though. Sorry, if that sounded mean. I loved the characters! | 2010-07-29 20:23:00 Author: Unknown User |
I would like very very much if someone made a level with some kind of fairytale 'bad guy' in it. Like Captain Hook or something. | 2010-07-29 20:24:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
I vote caves. They are much more fun to play and are much better suited for platforming; which I enjoy the most | 2010-07-29 21:45:00 Author: piggabling Posts: 2979 |
Just need to make sure I include some proper gameplay that is more than just jumping and running. This way of thinking is finally starting to catch on, excellent! Not so say your gameplay isn't fun, I still have your levels on my moon and play them from time to time. Look foward to it. | 2010-07-29 23:52:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |

I'm assuming this is cuz it's old though. Sorry, if that sounded mean. I loved the characters! That's okay I forgot to turn off the light before publishing it. The ineffective use of layers is part of the design. It's a cave not a straight tunnel and when I started it many, many month ago I wanted to make an annoying level. | 2010-07-30 08:20:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Temple levels seem to offer more diverse options for story and can have extremely more unique art styles than caves. I VOTE TEMPLES! | 2010-07-30 08:51:00 Author: Unknown User |
I hate caves. People can do super cool and unique things with temples, but the best caves levels are still just... caves. | 2010-07-30 20:31:00 Author: monstahr Posts: 1361 |
That's okay I forgot to turn off the light before publishing it. The ineffective use of layers is part of the design. It's a cave not a straight tunnel and when I started it many, many month ago I wanted to make an annoying level. By saying it had random chunks cut out, I didn't mean you have to make the scenery completely flat, I meant corner edit it better. | 2010-07-30 20:51:00 Author: Unknown User |
Right, it's part of the design though. I wanted the walls to be a bit rough and the floors not completely smooth. It's not a flaw, it's a feature! ^.^ | 2010-07-31 08:57:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
The old mine cart section is a bit overdone, is it not? | 2010-08-02 15:20:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
The old mine cart section is a bit overdone, is it not? Nah it's not really that overdone | 2010-08-02 17:04:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
You will be pleased to know (or more likely don't care) that I may incorporate a "This Is So Annoying!"-Switch for the more frustrating sections that even despise. Or I may take them out again. Anyway, there are more characters in this level than in any of my previous levels. Not that there were any characters in my previous levels... ^.^ So far there are fireflies, dragons, worms, fish, some giant beast and a one or two secret characters that many people may not find at all. | 2010-08-12 11:25:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

That was a quick reply. Thanks! It's looks nice, but I bet there will be a few people who give up before the end. | 2010-08-16 15:50:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
That was a quick reply. Thanks! It's looks nice, but I bet there will be a few people who give up before the end. So it's a hard level, eh? | 2010-08-16 16:17:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
Let's say it can be a bit annoying. It's not hard once you know when to press the jump button. Just did a quick run of it. So far it's about 10 minutes long if you don't die and don't stop to look for secrets. | 2010-08-16 16:28:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Wow, 10 minutes! I guess it's nearly done? | 2010-08-16 16:48:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
I'm hoping to finish it today. Just have to decide on how to let it end. Maybe a chase scene... Or another boss fight. | 2010-08-16 16:56:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Ran into some massive thermo problems last night. I can't even make a whole into a circle anymore even though I'm two notches away from overheating. Might have to cut something. | 2010-08-17 08:26:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Maybe you could trim excess corners and hope it's enough? And there's always Aya's thermo cheat tutorial... | 2010-08-17 10:07:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
I'm already using that glitch. | 2010-08-17 11:37:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Ouch! Well, good luck then. | 2010-08-17 11:59:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
You can do a part 2 Nah, that'll be to hard, lol, I have no idea I'm not a thermo expert really | 2010-08-17 12:57:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
If LBP 2 wouldn't come out in a few month I would do that, but I'm just trying to squeeze everything into it. Just replaced one more complex section with an elevator. Now I have the whole last quarter (or fifth?) to finish the level. Might have to resort to an Indiana Jones ending i.e. player being chased by a rolling rock. | 2010-08-17 13:14:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Almost done! o/ Just need to add some pretty scenery and a secrets counter now. Now published (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=34135-Cave-Story)! | 2010-08-23 12:01:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
