How far have you come?

Archive: 58 posts

I'm getting to the point now where I feel my creating has improved to such an extent, that I'm really embarrassed of my old levels and want to lock/recreate them. I try and avoid looking at them too much as they literally make me cringe. There's no way I'd make half the design choices now that I did back then. That said, I'm sure next year I'll be feeling the same about the levels I'm building now.

I in no way want this thread to turn into a discussion about whether or not my levels are any good, I was merely wondering if anyone else felt same?

Anyone planning on recreating their levels in LBP2?

Haha, When I look back at my old levels I'm like: How did I thought that looked cool !? I think I've improved a lot, but I never finish my levels anyways, lol2010-07-27 10:44:00

My first real level (not just a mech or other tech showcase) is kinda' meh. The thermo is maxed, it's got the early stages of the 160 hour bug, the logic that I was so proud of at the time is way overdone, the gameplay isn't particularly deep, it's only a third of the level I initially planned and the other two thirds were never finished because I've never been able to build a mech well enough that it really feels like gameplay (I love my latest mech, but it would not be fun to play an actiony level with it: it's just not responsive enough). It's too bad too, 'cuz I had the finale built and I loved it, but I just never could finish the middle.

Of course, I'm not all that thrilled with the levels I published earlier this year either. Both are short and one is little more than a tech demo/gimmick (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21545-Flying-spaceship-with-near-perfect-control-Starfighter). The other is nice enough, but pretty short and not even close to my original vision: I just can't seem to squeeze everything I want into the thermo. But those levels are leaps and bounds beyond my other one, and I'm just downright embarrassed by my first mech (it was uuuuUUUUUUuuuugggllyyyy!! and it was constantly dragging its head on the ground). So yeah, I feel the same way. I can't wait to get my hands on lbp2 and finally be able to do all the super advanced stuff that I've always been trying to (make vehicles with deeper controls than "hold R1 to go forward" and enemies that are more than simple cutouts).

And for the record, Kiminski, I like most of your levels. I wasn't especially into the Sonic one, but that's because I wasn't especially into Sonic back in the day, and the circusy one definitely wasn't your best (though still far above average for lbp), but I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much all the others, especially the last few you've released.

I in no way want this thread to turn into a discussion about whether or not my levels are any good,...
Oops.

Same here, I got to the point where i locked or took down all my old stuff.
I don't have to attention span to remake all my levels so I stopped with levels and started recreating paintings.

I actually would like to create again like I used to. Now my levels all veer towards realism with little platforming instead of more abstract representation of real settings where most locations are just there as an excuse to built a contraption. If you don't know what I mean wait for my next level in which I tried to make it more abstract again, but am now more and more moving towards realism.

On the other hand I enjoy making plausible settings, too.

But yes, I think I have come quite a long way.

Just today I came up with the idea of creating a "Why my level sucks" level, with magic mouths throughout explaining the bad design choices.
It should be published in a day or so.

The level in question was just me playing around with the editor for the first time. I would fix it, but being my first level, it's all glued together.
I don't really want to delete it since it was my first little level and it holds some sentimental value.
I still replay it from time to time, as it is pure platforming all the way through.

lol... yeah... like my first level I am a bit embarrassed about, but I dunno.. Playing them you can see my progression. Even my 2nd one is fun and a cute story, even though it has flaws and could do it much better now. I guess I think of it sorta like my photography. ..you can't take the shot back, but each season I constantly improve. I look back 7 years and I still had some awesome shots, but a bit few and far between from what I do now. Plus my equipment and knowledge is quite a bit better.

So I leave them all there as is. I may revisit them someday, but for now.. I only look forward to being able to finish my current project and working on the next one.

I played Spiralizer the lther day and almost felt like deleting it on the spot. It's terrible. Even Tumblerizer is pretty rubbish. The level I'm making now is thousands of times better than anything I did back then.

And this time next year we'll be saying the same thing about all those old LBP1 levels we made....

Lol, it's funny that I was just thinking this the other day. I keep looking at the spot occupied by my old levels and thinking: I should really move these off to my backup account and free up the spots for levels that aren't that awful.

The only thing stopping me is that they have a lot of hearts and plays from the olden days, so it's kind of a sentimental/nostalgic attachment I guess.

I'll probably work up the courage to ship them off eventually... I *am* running out of publish slots, and SackMech is much better!

Hey, a special Creator's Commentary level, that's a pretty good idea! I can think of a few levels I'd like to play with creator's comments.

I've come extremely far from where I started! Ha! My first level was just all wood and an attempt at a catapult. Even my newest level seems so old and ugly... Although I can never get to finish a level, I've improved very, very much as a creator. I just can't finish a level... ::/2010-07-27 15:21:00

I've come so far that I don't like any of my levels except for one (deep danger - survival challenge)
But the thing is, I don't have any newer levels to like either so I don't want to delete the older ones... which also makes me look like a really noobish creator.
You would know what i mean if you have played my levels...

As embarrassing as my levels are to me--after I get some distance from creating them & play through them again--I would never delete them if only for all the work I put into them. When I'm creating a level & am in the zone, I usually have several ideas at the same time, so in trying to get them all out there I always halfarse them thinking I'll go back & polish them up later, what usually happens is I forget about polishing them up or learn to live with them the way they are. But in the back of my mind I am forever planning on re-doing all of them, not from scratch, maybe just a little bit at a time.2010-07-27 16:29:00

I would say my levels increase in complexity and artistic device by a factor of 2 per level...

So even though I only have 4 levels published so far - each level shows a massively marked improvement on logic and artistic design from the previous.

I'm quite chuffed with my latest level - "Judge Dredd 2000AD : Mega City Decaffination" - as it's my most ambitious to date. (even though barely anyone has played it

some may find this hard to believe but I only started playing LBP a year ago on the 15th June i believe.

both my logic and and visuals have improved dramatically.

I'd have to say that visuals are my specialty.

First off, Kiminski, you're levels were one of the very first that I played when I got LBP.
And I for one really like the type of platforming that you put into your levels.
Whoo! I had to say that.
d:

Well, I've had this game since April of this year, and even though I haven't made a level yet, I sure as heck haven't been
just sitting around. After playing around with logic, and reading rtm's and comph's posts about logic, it makes sooo much more sense than
when I just started. I really wish I bought this game when it came out. And I really wish that I learned about this community sooner.
You guys have helped me achieve so much, and I doubt there will ever be a site as dedicated to a game like lbpcentral.
(:

tl;dr
You guys are awesome.

Even though I feel like I've come a long way in a year, I still feel very noobish as a creator when I play levels by creators such as Kaminski and Nuclearfish. I've gone from this:

Aww sorry! lol.

I feel like that too sometimes tbh, especially since I'm generally happy enough plodding along in create most of the time and don't really play community levels very often. Every now and then I'll take a break and play an absolutely amazing level that's full to the brim with varied gameplay and I feel like deleting the-far-from-fun-bit-of-scenery I've been working on for the last 3 months lol.

Poms in particular has a lot to answer for!

I had thought about the possibility of updating my levels..... specifically for using the sackboy control box to update Splat Invaders III's SMACU controls or the controls to Lunar Lander. However, on the other hand.... I like the 3D glitch in those levels, and if they break the 3D glitch I'm not sure it will be worth it.2010-07-28 14:20:00

I think a good solution would be to "hide" our firsts levels in North/South polo. Never delete them!.

Well, I honestly have thought some time about deleting my firsts levels too...
In fact I didn't have any problem to delete my "4 minigames and a half", but in this case, as I made it copyable there are many copies around there. (Strange how SR never copied and published it... maybe she didn't like it?) lol!

Heh, that's where my second and third level ever are. And my first level made with the full version are. The first level I've created sits on my moon. I stupidly decided to update it at one point and it's now unplayable.

At first, I didn't do much but logic stuff (Calculators, Tic-Tac-Toe with an AI, etc.) And now I can't do anything but boss-battles, am I a bit single-minded?

Yet, I haven't made a single 5-star level.

I have gone from :star::star::star: to :star::star::star::star:.

I don't feel embarassed by my old levels. I still feel proud of my first level (Gothic Reverie) because I built it all on my ownsome before joining the forums, with no tips, tricks or borrowed tools from the community. I've since updated one puzzle to replace some ridiculously convoluted logic with rtm's more efficient ordered input tool, but aside from that it remains in it's original form. It definitely looks primitive compared to my more recent stuff, but I don't feel so ashamed of it that I would ever delete the level after all the effort I put into making it.2010-07-28 18:34:00

Loved both those levels (and all the other skytowns). My all time fav level is Kiminski's Helgardh, but a close second is all your skytown levels. I dunno' what it is but something about skytown is just appealing to me: I totally wanna' live there I actually missed the more whimsical style from your original skytown level (that little hovel with the grass on top is the perfect example of what I'm talking about), but dang, the new ones look freakin' awesome.

Yes, I compeltely agree.
My first level was actually alright, but I'd love tor recreate it someday.
The sequel to it was very meh, so meh in fact, I deleted it.
I seem to remember that instead of using a bit of material on a piston with a magnetic key on it, I used a tiny car with one on it. No idea what I was thinking.

The boss to the sequel was also terrible.. :/

I would never get rid of any of my old levels (unless I really have to). Its a reminder to me what I have past done and what my best work was. That way if something is in one of my old levels that I want to try again I can just look back and think, "Ok, what do I have to do to make this better?". It usually comes out better than the last thing and I learn as a creator.

(So for your original question.) No, I don't fell the same as you do.

Allow me to put it this way: My first level was a Gardens themed race where you jumped across Dark Matter platforms. However, it's still up and published, because it's my first. I made it all on my own with no help. I was so proud of it then.

Now, I make stages like my clocktower, which was solely influenced by jump_button, and those are oodles better. So yes, I've improved TONS.

Off topic: I was a fan of your levels, Kiminski, before I knew this place even existed. Your pyramid level is what inspired my temple level :3

Improvements? Well I can say my create skills have definitely improved over the years however, I don't have any levels published that can prove that - they're all rubbish, literally. I deleted my oldest levels along the way and have them on my moon as memorabilia. I've never had enough drive to finish my levels I start, 2 unfinished levels I started sometime back on my moon.

I can only redeem myself in terms of skill in LBP2.. I really hope I can.

My First Level Was two of those super Jet looking things from the Canyons tied together with rods I thought it was clever so people could go forward and backwards, now i wanna go back in time and Whack My Self in the Head. My Next level was a teleporter, it was my first Model, I was Pretty Proud of it, My Second Model wasMuch Smaller and Easier to use, There not Published because I Think the Community has enough of those Teleporter levels.2010-07-29 15:19:00

I'm actually thinking of going back and remaking all my old levels. That way, I keep the nostalgia, but get a less embarrassing level. On my oldest level, I added magic mouths explaining how to get past every obstacle, since everyone was getting stuck and couldn't figure them out I think I'll get rid of them soon.

By todays standards, the level is pretty easy! It certainly seems the community has come pretty far.

I started out by making your typical 'Noob' level; Not much to it, and didn't really work. Then started to figure out how this game actually works. Made a few platformers and no one noticed. Then I created that "Ideas For Mm" level which got me my first bit of attention, but was overall unfulfilling. Next, came a prank on the cool pages which some people got...and other didn't. Then I made a mini game based off an advert for a ridiculous TV show I saw, 'Bring On The Wall.' After that I receded back to create mode for a while and started to experiment with creating music, thus, 'Morton's Music Shop' was born. Again, I buried myself in creating, making a bunch of totally random platforming, that would later become known as "Funktion Junktion." After I puplished it, I had real creators block and spent months in and out of creating different levels. I made SO much stuff, but I always felt like they were never good enough. Eventually, I published a weird light show thingy called "Just Watch." Then, I left A_Morton out of boredom and disappointment in myself.

For a while, I created on an account called Mr_T-Shirt, publishing two levels (Killer Quack and Mechanical Engineering.)

Now, with the release of LBP2, I've gone back to creating on A_Morton. Im currently working on several different things at once, which, judging by my track record, I will probably get distracted from and start making other levels.....which I don't finish and get distracted on something else; it's an endless cycle! XD

So how far have I come? Well, I guess i'm reasonably successful, I just wish people could see all I have to give. Hopefully the best is yet to come!

Yeaaahhh. After reading it back, it makes it look like I had a miserable time on LBP, which is totally not the case! I had so much fun making all my levels, and when people played them and liked them; there's no better feeling.

I deleted all my previous levels when I published Puzzle World, becaus eI thought they where bad. Now I think Puzzle World in itself isn't that good.

I still remember my first level, Garden of Joy. It started with a gaint stone sackperson telling you to clean up the litter. This was done by jumping over some bottles and pushing a button which exploded them. Then you walked along for a while, swung on some giant sponge hearts the sack brought for you. Then you met a MASSIVE burning sackperson, who said he loved stickers. Walked back where you came, and there was a big stone circle. Place a sticker on it and go right. The sackperson was gone. Walk up a hill, skateboard race down, and grabe a rocket to the end. Good times, good times.

As for remakes, I remade my level "Labratory Attack", and started a remake of my second level "Forgotten Desert" in LBP2, but I don't know if I'll finish it or not. It's been Forgotten, you could say.

I used to make some crazy, difficult yet fun levels as a noob along with inappropriate humor thus resulting in several bans. They're still up on my other accounts, and I'm still very proud of them :]. I switched through different accounts before settling on xVoodeedoox where I first discovered the corner editing tool and wanted to create something entirely new in lbp [and made the levels on my page you see now]. I don't have access to my PS3 so I can't take any before/after photos, but will probably update later.
I say I've gone pretty far. I would have gone farther and updated my now ancient levels, but I find myself working on too many things at once/having too many ideas, and I end up not finishing many of them because by then they'd have been outdated XD Many times I'm forced to compile many different unfinished levels into one level, like Ultimate Reality or Alice in Wonderland.
