Hey awespme,

Rules:
If I make a grammar mistake, I owe all you 50 XP.

The first is a conditional phrase that is before the independent clause; thus, I believe you need to end the phrase with a comma.

Same you if you make a mistake you owe me 50 XP.You're guilty of an illegal use of "you."

Goes for two days per bet season. This is not a complete thought but rather a sentence fragment. Where's your noun?

May I please have my exp points now?

Have a nice day,

Same you if you make a mistake you owe me 50 XP.

You did something that is not grammar friendly at the beginning of that sentence. Give me the 50 XP.

There is an absence of a capital letter at the beginning of your sentence. Not only that but you misspelt the word "terrible".

I firmly believe that grammar is a descriptive study of conventional language use rather than a set of prescriptive rules. You will find that persistently slavish adherence to grammatical conventions comes only from the most unimaginative of minds. Knowledge of grammar informs us about how to structure our language but it shouldn't govern us - and it never has. lbp is awespme has successfully and entirely unambiguously made himself and his intentions understood and yet has adhered to the commonly expected grammatical use only very loosely.

It is for this reason that my interpretation of a 'grammar mistake' is a statement about grammar that is untrue, rather than a deviation from standard usage, which could just as easily be called an innovation as a mistake.

This brings me to my point that it is in fact jeffcu28 who is clearly in error by claiming that "Goes for two days per bet season." is an incomplete thought by willfully supressing a natural inference when the referent is perfectly obvious. James Joyce, I suspect, would be disgusted.

Splitting the infinitive (because it wouldn't be two words if we weren't supposed to),

Nice.

I suspect lbp is awespme to lose this nonetheless...I haven't seen him post one thing that was grammatically correct in terms of proper English grammar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_grammar). I'm sure he would lose all his XP before he can say "pwned"

First of all, I find it highly ironic that despite your definition of grammar, you slavishly adhere to grammatical conventions. Unless, of course, you're mocking the thing you are attacking, in which case you are truly evil.

Now, I never criticized awespme for violating conventional language, as I completely agree with your definition, but I was playing on his terms and definitions of "grammar." To make my point, let's drop the term "grammar" as it implies "syntax," or more generally the written word, and let us instead use "communication." I agree that awespme generally communicates his thoughts and intentions clearly, but I would like to challenge you on his intention for this thread.

If awespme shared your definition of "grammar," then this betting game would be absurd. As long as he is able to communicate his intentions, then he'll never have to forfeit exp points. Likewise, if we can communicate our intentions, which most of the time we do, then we'll never have to forfeit our exp points. This would be a very boring game indeed.

Thus, the existence of this thread only makes sense if the definition of "grammar," in this instance, is adherence to conventional language rules. That was awespme's intentions for this thread, and that's how I treated it. By convention "Goes for two days per bet season." is "incorrect" despite having an obvious referent.

And because we're having this conflict on his intentions, he clearly didn't communicate well, which by your definition, implies a grammatical error. See, either way I (I mean "we") win exp points!

Thus, the existence of this thread only makes sense if the definition of "grammar," in this instance, is adherence to conventional language rules. That was awespme's intentions for this thread, and that's how I treated it. By convention "Goes for two days per bet season." is "incorrect" despite having an obvious referent.

The reason that I chose to state my redefinition of 'grammar mistake' was because I was aware that it was well removed from original poster's intention - indeed he had communicated his own intention quite plainly, but I elected to construct my own definition based on my personal goals (in this case to establish a cool indifference toward grammatical pedantry). But of course that is a major factor in why the small-minded cling so fearfully to their grammar, because once language is generated and loosed on the world it is wholly in the hands of the listener or reader to treat it as they will unless it is lashed down with precise punctuation and text-book syntax.

he clearly didn't communicate well, which by your definition, implies a grammatical error.

Joking aside, jeff, that is literally nothing like the definition that I offered. Oh and surely the comma should come after 'which' because 'by your definition' is the subordinate clause.

Subordinately yours,
S

Wouldn't that be too many commas, though? I was thinking of something like this, and I always wondered if there would be three commas in that situation.

Not really. The comma before the 'which' is an oxford comma (or serial comma) which is not strictly necessary. The main clause would read:

He clearly didn't communicate well which implies a grammatical error

which is fine.

How on Earth did I miss this thread? I live for epic and pointless discussions of grammar, even when I am not speaking rhetorically.

As for opinions on grammar particularly use of commas and awkwardly worded sentences I have some. First, about sentence fragments. They are bad also run-on sentences aren't good either. Erors do happen from time to time, however, so be sure to proofread your posts and search for mispellings. Spellcheckers work well, but one thing they will often not catch is the improper use of apostrophe's. Its just not in their nature. Homonym errors are fairly common as well, and with practice their something you will learn too notice. One of the most confusing punctuation rules to remember is how to use a semicolon; so don't feel bad if you get it wrong at first.

Hard and fast grammar rules are just one aspect of writing, and things like usage of a passive voice should be avoided. It behooves one to avoid archaisms as well, and don't abbrev. Mixed metaphors are worth considering, although often you can't see the forest until you've crossed that bridge. Try to remember that parenthetical remarks (however relevant they may seem) are not necessary. Lastly, exaggerating is the absolute worst thing you can ever do, even worse than using cliches until the cows come home.

Really though, the one thing that will help your writing the most is attention to detail and a commitment to excelence.

No, it is not fine! You know why? Because you forgot to capitalize.

That wasn't a sentence. It was just a fragment that I left uncapitalised to show that the sense ran on from the end of the quotation. Now, you probably could have had points for all the times I've begun a sentence with a conjunction but that's just a reflection of speech patterns.

EDIT:

Homonym errors are fairly common as well

I know you've made all those intentional errors but somehow I get the feeling that you had intended to use 'homophone' here.

As for homonym/homophone... Come to think of it you're absolutely right. In school I was always taught that those types of mistakes were "homonym errors", presumably because the user intended the meaning of one word by the use of another (incorrect) word, thus the name. Homophone error seems a much more accurate description though, as homonyms are a subtype of homophone anyway.

Semi-colons help prevent run-on sentences from going; with that said, I just used one now.
I seem to use a semi-colon often because I seem to go on with feedback. Therefore, I don't think it's useless, but rather useful.

Anyways, I'm surprised I did not notice this thread. -_-

I didn't think semi colons were such a touchy subject.Well, it's not so much touchy as it is embarrassing. After a bad day at Oxford, Comma went out for a few drinks and overdid it a little. Comma met Colon (who was working as two thirds of a traffic light at the time), and a few bad decisions and nine months later Semicolon came to be. After a series of ugly custody battles it was determined that Semicolon was Conjunction's half-sibling, thus the similarity in roles the two sometimes share.

P.S. For the record, I thought your original joke was funny.

Well, that's just the thing, the 'user' can't make a homonym error because homonyms are literally the same word, thus the name. A 'homonym error' could only be made by the reader or listener, where they infer the wrong meaning of the word.

They're / their / there are homophones because they sound the same but have different spellings. Uh, thus the name.

Please try to avoid using homophones - homophonia ought not to be tolerated in any circumstance.

Homonym errors are fairly common as well, and with practice their something you will learn too notice.Well, thanks to salieri we now know that Taffey is one IQ point short of a genius because he should have said homophones instead of homonyms. But here, "too" is a homophone of "to," which is the technically correct word to use here. Also, "their" is a homophone of "they're," and "they're" is the correct word to use here. Hehe.

No! Don't do it! We cannot accept someone else's XP! :kz:

Or at least I can't. Seriously, this is awespme's bet. Unless he agrees to it, I don't want to force you into giving away XP.

Trust me, I have no use for it anymore, I bought a ultimate bundle in November so Exp has just accumulated.

Wait so what's the point in this thread?

The point of this thread is to talk about grammar.

For instance, you should have added a comma after 'wait'.

The point of this thread is to talk about grammar. In addition to general discussions of grammar, I also hope this thread helps stamp out and abolish repetitiveness and redundancy. It will also be good for grammar discussions.

Seriously though, why is this still in Everything Else PSP?

Also, I'm seeing a lot of people that I've never seen before. You people need to post more often in the General Stuff forums. We don't bite.

Lastly, I have a challenge: Try to correct any of these (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/search.php?searchid=283363) posts.

You forgot the period at the end of "including me".

And this is rather entertaining. All the discussions, all the unintentional humor. Ah, gotta love it. Keep posting stuff, people!!!

You forgot to add spaces between the words 'This', 'is', and 'insane' in your username. Do I win?

No, because you forgot the capitals in 'is' and 'insane' when you quoted my username. "Do I win?" is also a fragment.

EDIT: Ok, that's really weird. Starchy's post disappeared.

So sorry for the unintentional double post...

My guess is that the Mods love watching us point out each other's mistakes. They're cruel and heartless like that. :hero:
