Backup Backup Backup!!

Archive: 9 posts

I want to take a few moments to share my poor judgment with the community as another recent lesson any creator could learn from.

I cannot believe I did this, but I finished my recent level this morning without backing it up first. Early in the edit session, I accidentally glued most of my level forward (instead of the thin layer object I just created). I quickly rewound, and then moved on. I was so focused on getting the level completed and published before I had to leave for work I didn't bother to check to see if there were any untoward side effects.

Alas, there were. I finished the level, and then ran a quick play test to ensure everything looked good. The first thing I noticed is that a lot of parts from my 3D opening scene were somehow crushed out of existence, and that a lot of my tight tolerance moving obstacles were now glued to the background.

I nearly deleted the entire level in outrage after having spending dozens of hours in the creation process. (Also, partly due to the fact that I'm not sure my overall efforts turned into a good level anyway.) Luckily, I took a deep breath, and after thinking about it, I hope to be able to fix the damage tonight.

SO... This has been said time and time again, but please take the time to do a SAVE AS... to another moon bubble prior to any lengthy edit session, and also backup your levels to your HD (and even USB drives) so that you can restore your hard efforts without having to face hours of recreation.

Woah, i would be extremly mad if that happened to me, Because yesterday i was working on bug changes for one of my levels for only 10 minutes and my bro accidently unplugged the ps3 and i had to redo 10 minutes of work and i got mad and i just didn't go back to fixing them

Anyway i hope you will be able to fix your level tonight!!

Given the relatively small number of moon craters available, my own preferred backup system consists of bumping the version number in the level title after every major edit, and backing up to disk.

That's a great idea too, Aya. I have only created 3 real levels so I have plenty of crater space at the moment. Basically, I am only using a crater, to SAVE AS... to prior to an edit session, then backing that up to the HD. It allows for a quicker restore from backup that way.

In the end it took me about 4 hours to get the level "publishable" but I still need to recreate the sticker switch logic to end the opening sequence.

Yea, but really, don't get to frustrated! I had my entire level unglued once, and I had no backup, and I saved the level. I just took a deep breath, and slowly pieced it all back together. The level is NEARLY done right now, just need to make the ride sequence.2010-07-27 19:00:00

Sad to hear Rohar

I have deleted all of my old levels, cause they are crappy. I have no idea what to make, so i can make a ''Real'' level...
The only reason i keep 2 of my levels is because of the plays. My wipeout level got 11,000! cheers
I'm much better at making levels now, i have played the Logic pack

Remaking one of my levels now and I save to a different patch about 4-5 times before I start the cycle again so I can go back to previous work. In addition I always upload the latest build online and back it up to my USB drive. Never had backup problems.2010-07-27 19:13:00

It took me about 4 hours to put it back together and I think it was worth the effort, considering the positive feedback I've gotten so far. I'm glad I decided not to delete the entire crater in a fit of frustration!
