Blocking players?

Archive: 13 posts

What's the easiest way to block players from a certain area, but can be reversed later? I tried invisible dissolve, but then players can just grab thin air, which makes it looks odd. Is there a better way fo this or should I stick with the dissolve?2010-07-24 00:15:00

Well you can make an invisible dark matter wall with a brain attached (out of the view of the players), and use a switch to destroy the brain with the dark matter.
I'm not sure, but see if rubber can be made invisible. If it can, use pistons.

I don't really want to use the first idea because of the noise the brain makes, and the fact that it gives out points.

The piston could work for most areas, but for some of them, it would end up crushing items needed for the level.

The best idea I could think of was moving invisible material to the ceiling with a bolt, but the scenery would get in the way.

Do you make your pistons stiff?

Depends, there are many good ways depending on the level, what's the scenery and is the level about?2010-07-24 00:38:00

For some reason I can't multi-quote on the PS3... GDN, by using pistons I assume you mean creating a vertical barrier of material and retracting it to a wall? That would end up crushing key items in my level.

I don't want to give out too much info, but the beginning has more of a horror feel to it, and most of the scenery is furniture.

Can't mutyquote on PS3 browser?
That's odd, i've never seen such glitch, i've been able to MQ in all forums i've tried and no problem.

Are you jusre you didn't turn off your Javascript off?
That's the only reason i can think why ou wouldn't be able to...
(Note: When you go to turn on the Javascript, make sure you actually click "on" as the option "on" will be highlighted even if its off, so may seem like its on while its actually not.)

Also, you could just make a book shelf out of Dissolve, or a simple wall, that opens up, i mean if its a horror house, a dissapearing wall and hiddend passages shouldn't be out of place.

Hope that helps.

It's not exactly a horror house. I might try demitting, depending on how much thermo it takes up. Either that, or i'll use a combination of bolt and piston methods.

Have you played Aya's newest level 'Garden of Goodies'? If you haven't yet, check it out. You will find every material cow glitched to be like the 16 basic materials... You could use dissolve that looks like another material you have used or you could pay around with them and try to dissolve another invisible material that you can not grab.2010-07-24 18:07:00

Not on a ps3 now, but can't you make a big block of whatever material you want, take a picture of it, save it as a sticker, then just stick it on your dissolve?2010-07-25 07:34:00

Yes that works, but it looks tacky and out of place compared to actual materials.

You could also try making it where there is a door in the 3rd back thin layers to let you walk out, you could use thin gas on a piston to stop people from going through it without finishing the puzzle, etc. You could use theck to with this method with thin gas glued behind it to make sure none of the infected can pass through.

try to dissolve another invisible material that you can not grab.

That's not gonna work.... The grabbing and dissolving properties are tied together. Unless there is some new glitch in there that I missed.

If you just need to destroy the object once then there is the one-time demitter, which takes up the thermo of a single emitter... TBH, I dont' get why people are always worried about the thermo implications of the demitters in the first place, especially for individual cases....

OK, based upon the implications of Aya's recent discovery regarding emitters, it is now the case that objects emitted in create mode are still associated with the same object in play mode. This is actually great as it means that demiters are far less troublesome to use. If you do accidentally trigger them in create mode it shouldn't matter.

More importantly, I can announce a new demitter switch. The "one time demitter". In essence, if you have something that you want to dissolve and you never need to emit it again, you can use this switch. It looks like this:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=13811&d=1268187499

So, you configure it to max at once=1 and infinite lifetime. You then hook up a 1-shot input and trigger it. This will emit the object in your level, preferably in the place you want it to be. Then move your "switch" elsewhere in the level, and use the one-shot signal to dimit the object in play mode.

So, essentially it's 1-time demit logic, without any logic. I haven't added this to the tech demo, or the level... hopefully you can work out how to construct it for yourself... right?
