Sticker controlled robot!

Archive: 76 posts

This is a concept that i'm half way through creating, and is been made for no reason other than because I can!

As the title says, it is a sticker controlled robot. However, it is more complex than it sounds. To use it, you are given a set of blocks, each with 26 sticker switches on, corresponding to the letters of the alphabet stickers found in the tutorials. In effect, you spell out commands that the robot had been pre-programmed to know, which it would then complete. I'll draw up an example if anyone needs it. So far, it only knows "Left", but i'm intending on programming in "Right" and "Rave". The level itself will be a simple demo with explanations.
Thoughts?

Wow, that actually sounds really awesome. Good luck and if you need ideas for command, I'd like a sleep command where it shows a zzz in the air and a jump command. Plus, if you could make it move it's arms and all, then maybe you could also have a commans to make it dance! That'd be funny. I can't wait to try out the demo.2010-07-24 04:24:00

Thanks people, i'm not at home tonight but i'll be working on it sunday night
"Dance" was one of my original ideas, but I didnt have the energy to make the arms xD Sleep sounds cool too, I might put those into V2 after I release the first demo!

Awesome, thanks! it's totally okay if you can't add dance, I could imagine it being quite tricky and I can't wait to try the demo and thanks for confirming the sleep control. It'll be great to see that kind of action implemented. If you need any other ideas/testers, I'd be happy to do so!2010-07-25 04:26:00

Mind giving me a heads up when its done?
I'd love to see this robot in action.

Wow, this is a really awesome idea mate.
The title doesn't give the idea justice, I was thinking it would left, right, shoot and was confused as to why you would use stickers of all things to control it. How wrong I was.

This is probably one of the most original ideas floating around at the moment and I want to see just how much is possible with the thermo maxed. Of course the number of actions would depend on how the robot is built. I really think you should try and go all out on this, it'd be amazing to see.

Agh, people make me blush!

As I said before, I shall get to work on it ASAP. I did think the title wasn't very good, but I didn't know what else to put xD
Also, I may have ran into a slight error D:
If I had a sticker switch attatched to an emmiter, would the object demit when the sticker is removed?

I pretty sure it doesn't demit. That doesn't happen with any other switches.

Kay, thats nothing major. Just means i'll have to change the emitted blocks and have a "reset" switch that wipes away all of the blocks currently there.2010-07-25 16:00:00

Hey, if you need a better name how about this. The Stickerbot X500 - it moves, it shoots and it'll fall asleep if it's bored. Yes, a robot can get bored. At least yours can or should.2010-07-27 00:59:00

Oooo! this is a very good Idea, sounds very interesting, love to see this done but, I had an idea.
if you don't do something he gets bored after 20-30 seconds and after 10 or so seconds after that he falls asleep that would be rather cool, and yeah... well. good luck building this robot killing machine... I mean... ugh... never mind -cough!- build a death bot -cough!- well... cya later.

Out of interest how you going about the logic?
I was thinking it would work via a series of AND gates, one for each action, which are activated by a system that recognises letter and the position of the letter. But your question about the emitter got me wondering about how you are going about it.

Make him do the "robot" dance and instead of him doing actual dance moves....a Question Mark apears and a speech bubble saying "really?! you couldn't have thought of something better?"

That would be awesome!

I know your probably really busy but if you need another idea for an action here's one

Self destruct

Then it says " Does not compute, does not compute. Error! Errooooooor! " *Head explodes off*

Okay, sorry for the errors and glitches. This is a great idea and I hope the bugs can be fixed. And just in case if there are any more, I'd be happy to test it and say every command. Also, unless people want to do the other commands with his head off, you should have his head emit a couple seconds after it explodes if that command happens. Also, it probably should just in case they want to contuously have it's head explode off without restarting the level. Maybe there could be an action called growth and a new head appears, lol. I don't know. Multiple ways of doing it.2010-07-28 22:47:00

I have created a very basic version of what I would call a Sticker Robot.
If you want to try you have to go to my key vault.. I never locked the key away so it will be sitting on the ground in my key vault.
Pick it up and go to my Level.
I only have 2 commands but I only did it that way because I wanted to show it to Fish94
Also only fish94 gets to see the logic

Expect good work

Also if anyone saw my level and thinks it was a simple robot.. dont worry I made a robot with many pistons and wobble bolts
Pictures will be added up later today

Although the stickering for a command sounds good. Ever think about having an alphabet ready? Such as, you select the letters you want, then you select enter? It surely is possible, a friend of mine, is currently working on an alphabet that is translated to binary. This would create a more complex system, but it would be cool. Being that some people do not have all the stickers.2010-07-31 16:34:00

Author:

Well I am using an alphabet and something like an enter button.

Example: [W] [A] [V] [E] [ ]
Send Button --> [|

Then a new set of command boxes enter.
(This fixes my biggest problem by getting a new set of command boxes)

I checked out your robot. I expected to find something far more complex. To help you, I'll create an example, allowing repetition of the same function. When I'm done, I'll show it to you. Ill keep it simple using the sticker switch. (Hate that the alphabet is all the way at the bottom of the list :/ )2010-08-01 03:21:00

Author:

Dont worry i only created that robot very quickly and it was to give Fish94 an idea of what can happen.

New problem:
My sticker boxes have created a lot of themro due to there being hundreds and hundreds of sticker switches.. I am pretty sure I can lower this drascticly but I have to go on the PS3 first and try out my idea.

I am interested in the alphabet idea you have though.. Ill add you on PSN tonight.

Also if anyone wants to create a robot for me I will gladley look at it.
(I already have one I like but could be better)

Also double posting is frowned upon the community so for next time please use the Edit button found in the botten right hand of your post. Thanks

Hmmm, check my published levels, I named it Sticker Robot Concept, or something of that sort. I just recreated what you had published. Having multiple commands shouldn't be so difficult. To avoid having so many sticker switches, why not try and have a set amount of letters. And only a limited amount of space to place them. Lets say you want the robot to fire rockets, you would abreviate it to a 4 letter word. such as FRRK (FiRe RocKets). Using this method could reduce much thermo. You would have a list, allowing players to know what each represents.2010-08-01 05:45:00

It looks like M_Logic_E has the better logic (or atleast looks likes it).
I need to play around with a little and try to figure out how to add a new command.

Alright man, I'll delete someone so you can add me. Sorry, I made my logic compact, meaning, there are some switches you might not be able to see. Using the current method, it can a couple of commands. But it can be expanded to hold even more.2010-08-01 23:47:00

I haven't made it yet, i'll notify you once I have.
EDIT: Keylevel made. It's actually a cunning trick: Though it tells you to put the keys in the correct order, you actually have to go up to the top of the level with the jetpack. When you see the circular vent, grab and keep going up. There will be a small section with the key and the scoreboard. I'd imagine it'll be enough to trick most people :]

Funny, I checked it a couple of hours after I commented on this and just saw your post. I figured it out when I played, since its impossible to lift the keys, and obviously the room was bigger that it was suppose too, then I saw the dissolve lol. I found it funny ...anyway... Your concept is pretty much like mine, although, mine is more compact, I just looked on how yours was working but didnt feel like editing it. The "e" for the second box was not emmiting where it was suppose to, that was the only thing I saw that stood out.2010-08-03 04:53:00

That was the problem - I couldn't make it emit when needed. For some reason, everything suddenly went out of time.
