Whale Wars, anyone?

Archive: 12 posts

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this already!

Whale Wars is one of my favorite shows to watch to root for the "bad guys", or the Japanese whaling ships, in this case. The Whale Wars crew are so embarrassing. They never get anything done, and I'm sure the show's editors work very hard to make the show seem exciting. Now, it would be something else if they were actually doing something about the whaling ships instead of throwing apples and potatoes filled with stinky stuff at them. I'm not so educated on the intelligence of whales and dolphins, which is apparently the case against hunting whales and dolphins, but I'm not so sure the Whale Wars crew is either. What they need is someone from the navy or something, someone who actually knows what they're doing. Instead, they just ride a really slow boat and chase another really slow boat the whole time. And usually they never catch up. Or they throw stinky stuff on their boat and I realize that all of the build-up in every episode of this show is always for nothing.

My favorite was an episode where they had a speed boat that was really slow, and the person thought he was soooo bad *** when he caught up to them. They tried to stop their boat with something but they failed and then they tried hitting them with stinky apples which would apparently make the whale meat go bad. Personally, if I was the captain of that boat, and if the stinky apples did ruin the whale meat, I would kill the whale out of spite.

I don't see how anyone could possibly root for the Japanese whaling fleet. Killing whales is just un-necessary regardless of how smart or stupid they are...and the whole "research" thing is just a scummy pretense to get around the restriction on whaling. Humans ruin everything...the oceans and this planet are sadly doomed.

I appreciate what Sea Shepherd is trying to do but agree that they seem embarrassingly incompetent...I do hope it's largely due to the editing...I really can't watch this show...it's so frustrating.

Not sure what speed boat you are referring to, the black one (Ady Gil?) was pretty darn cool...looked like something Batman would have. It's a pity they wrecked it...if you can run circles around another ship and you have a flimsy carbon fiber hull don't steer right into the path of a water cannon!

Captain: [taking his crew out to the deck] Are we ready to do this?
Crew: Yeah!
Stan: Yeah. Hell yeah! Let's do it!
Captain: Are we badasses?
Crew, Stan: Yeah!
Captain: Are we badasses??
Crew, Stan: Yeah!!
Captain: All right, so... what do we do?

I love South Park.

I saw that episode before I started watching Whale Wars, and I thought they were exaggerating. But they were actually dead on. The crew is full of all of these pretentious types, all full of themselves because they're helping whales, so much so that it's detrimental to their mission imo. Every time something goes wrong the captain has this look on his face like "How could this be possible?! We're total bad *****!" Hilarious stuff.

Watching this season is the most fustrati g thing I've ever seen. They have done ten time more damage to themselves than any whaler. Let's see: spent millions on new speed boat and Bob barker. One is too flimsy for open water and the other just old as hell with a bum engine that is just as slow as Steve Irwin. Destroyed their fastest boat for no reason by leaving it infront of a whaling ship. Helicopter broken, broken creshwater tanks ,soaked a small boat and ruin an engine, lost another small boat only to try to run the propeller over rocks and break the prop, which is completely dumb when u had a tow boat, numerous useless prop fouling and numerous injurys to the incompetent crew. These guys are on national tv Demonstrating how to destroy every piece of expensive equipment they have while i jurying themselves and being utterly ineffective in stopping any whaling.

The destruction of the multi million $$$ boat the Ady Gil was due to the whaling vessel deliberately ramming it. Not that they were parked in it's path. (See the videos on youtube Bow-on (front view), the ship leans heavily to port (left) which means it is turning starboard (right).

The reason that they do not do anything more than throw rancid butter is because as soon as they use weapons or more extreme methods, then the Japanese look like the ones in the right. There would be international condemnation towards the Sea Shepard and it's crew.

I do not condone what the Japanese are doing, and feel sorry that all the Greenpeace crews can do is bother the whalers by hanging around them like flies on s**t.

The NZ'er that boarded the whaling vessel to give the captain a bill for damages to the "Bat-Boat" and was consequently arrested and imprisoned in Japan for 3 months then released without any serious charges (BBC Quote)
Peter Bethune was deported from Japan after receiving a suspended two-year sentence for obstructing Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Ocean.

The reason for not pressing charges for the Japanese is it makes them look better (and Peter Bethune pathetic) if they let him go. If they pressed charges there would be more support for him than the Japanese, this way it makes him look like a bit of an idiot.

Also on GP's side they cut ties with Peter because they do not want to make themselves look like terrorists that would board another countries vessel creating a international incident. The worst thing GP could do is to take over one of the whaling ships. The aim is too keep the pressure on until the Japanese do something stupid or it gets enough international exposure that foreign governments finally act. The IWC is the most useless, corrupt bunch of political waffle ever!

My advice: watch "The Cove"

I'm not 100% sure on this but I don't think these guys have anything to do with Greenpeace...

I hope people realize that some of the whale species being hunted like the humpback are endangered...and they are also really cool if you've ever gone whale watching.

> Their ignorance is immense, trying to change a peoples way of life thats been established for hundreds and hundreds of years.

What nonsense...they've had immense factory ships to kill/process whales for hundreds and hundreds of years?!? It has nothing to do with a way of life...I think you're thinking of Eskimos...this is all about the $.

> The aim is too keep the pressure on until the Japanese do something stupid or it gets enough international exposure that foreign governments finally act.

Yes, I also believe this is their goal...and realistically speaking it's the only thing they can do.
