Ok I Have No Idea How To Do This............

So I'm making a lvl of the game LIMBO. There's this section in the video where the little is jumping across the big letters of a Neon sign saying "HOTEL". I know how to make the letters fall apart and the sparks, my problem is that I don't know how to make the neon tubes flash on and off like in the video. I could make the neon tube effect by placing glass and stickering it with a white. But the problem with that is I couldn't take the sticker off. So I have no idea how to make that same effect. The stickering option is the closest thing to the real thing so...if anyone has any suggestions please don't be afraid to leave one :

As it's all in silhouette, I'd just have some Dark Matter emit in front of the letters. 2010-07-22 20:18:00

How would I do that though. The metal part of the letters would be thick the neon tubes would be thin glass so how could I emitt dark matter infront unless it's thick but it would be way too noticeable........Don't get me wrong though I very much appreciate the help 2010-07-22 21:58:00

You can make the "light on" material emmit and demmit over an "light off" sign. Attach it to invisible dark matter, capture it and make it emmit exactly over the "off" sign.2010-07-22 23:22:00

Okay - you could attack this in a couple of ways. If you just want the letters to turn off, like in the video, you could use glitched dissolve that looks and behaves like glass - as in you can sticker it, etc, but it can dissolve. You can get that material (and others) from Aya042's level 'Garden of Goodies.
To get a flickering effect, you could use that same material and have it emitted in such a way that proximity triggers re-emitting - with a delay. Or could turn off the emitter if it was reversed via a proximity switch. Not sure how easy that would be, but it may work.

The other idea would be fiddly (meaning take a bit of work) but would possibly look more effective. I'd embed very small spotlights around the outer edge of the letters, embedded in dark matter, perhaps behind glass? You can tweak them to be solid-looking (Shadow/foggy) and you can also tweak the length of the beams to fit the lettering. You could have them flickering on and off with some off-screen logic (like a wheel with mag switches attached that will turn off certain bulbs at certain times - using reverse settings). That off-screen logic could be triggered by proximity switch - as in the bolt starts revolving when the player approaches. This would help to avoid the 160 hour glitch.

I'm the first to admit I'm no whiz at logic, but that's what I'd try, probably in preference to the emitters as I have trouble with them from time to time. Good luck with it!

You sure you don't just want flickering lights in the background? It would probably achieve pretty much the same effect, and be a WHOLE lot easier!

Off topic: That game in the vid looks really good... too bad it's Xbox huh?

*nods head* Mmmmhmmm Well I looked at the video more closely and it turns out the the lights don't flicker on and off......, but now my problem is'nt the flickering lights........but I think I know how to solve it

*Hours later........* Well I was just thinking how much I love the game limbo. I wanted to play to SOOOO bad, since I have near zero chance of ever playing I decided to recreate the entire game...In LBP....and LBP2. Of course some parts will be near impossible to create in lbp1 and so when LBP 2 comes out I'll update all the old ones, and make the new ones Sound good? ;D

Well, you could embed the glass into the letters and have a thin layer of DM emit in front.
