LBP Themes

Archive: 1 post

Everyone knows that themes are an important part of a LBP level. It helps contribute to the the levels way of progressing. For example you wouldn't want a horror level to be all platforming no story, and you also wouldn't want a Island level to be no platforming all story (few exceptions). I decided to come up with a list of themes of LBP levels that are commonly used.

Too Many
These themes are way overused

1. Island
A simple beautiful Island setting that normally starts near a beach and progresses from there. Sometimes it's the opposite but not usually. Many LBP have made island levels and a lot have succeeded. A lot didn't. This is definitely one of the most common themes out there.
Main use:
Scenery Level
Novelty Value:
1.34/10 (still can be entertaining at times)

2.Cave
Fits along with prison but not quite. Nothing is more general to describe a level. Caves are great for any genre of levels but are found in a ton of levels. It's best to make sure your caves in your levels aren't the main part of the level.
Main Use:
N/A
Novelty Value:
.47/10 (Note: this is for a LEVEL theme not just a segment)

3.Prison
Although there are some pretty unique prison levels out there, it's just been used a lot. Most common story is 'Escape from prison', but I'd like to see 'Escape to Prison' Kinda like you got out but you don't want anyone knowing your gone sorta thing. When It comes to Novelty Value though the prison is a lot higher than Cave but just a little higher than Island.
Main Use:
Action/Platformer
Novelty Value:
3.79(Still want more unique themes)

Simple but Effective
How about simple but dull? We've seen these too often to still interested in these. Sure these are great alternatives for people who aren't great with visuals but you have to be GREAT with logic to make this interesting. Most of these are Cardboard, some are made of Cardboard WITH color stickers. WOW! <--Look! I'm wowed by your lack of talent!
Main Use:
Race, R1 Race, Tutorial
Novelty Value:
4.03/10(Still playable)

City
Okay this one might not fit in with the Too Many section but it's still seen often. Often sackboy runs through the streets of a city or over the rooftops of it. The levels with this theme can be fun if executed correctly but I personally don't really like this theme, as I haven't seen any great levels with it.
Main Use:
Platforming, Destroy-A-City
Novelty Value:
4.89/10 (not bad but not good either)

Not Too Many
Some levels have these themes but not enough to make us sick.

Factory
This is different from the laboratory as it tends to have modern or old technology. Smoke is often seen coming from hidden rockets to add to the atmosphere. Gears tend to make noise and there is often some conveyor belts. Gameplay tends to include jumping in boxes, using pipes as platforms or solving puzzles. One example of a factory level is Poms' Spice and Co.
Main Use:
Platforming, Puzzle
Novelty Value:
5.61/10 (Starting to tire out)

Anti-Color
The Novelty Value of these levels is slowly increasing as less and less people make levels with this style. These can be fun but if overused, can be boring and hard to see. The gameplay of this theme has never seen story telling (at least not good storytelling) and probably never will see any of the sort. This theme is meant for platforming only.
Main Use:
Platforming
Novelty Value:
6.35/10(increasing)

Knock-offs
Every LBP player has seen at least one of these levels. They are either based off a show, video-game or movie. A lot of levels do this but the reason this isn't in Too Many is because every show, movie or whatever tends to vary in scenery and gameplay. I put this as a theme because even though it's vague, it still is different from an island level than a island level off of a movie. Sure you might think differently but I put it in this post so, hah. The Novelty Value is high because no matter how many Mario or Sonic clones there are, there is always something unique out there as well. Before you go making a Level about a game or whatever check how many levels already are made.
Main Use:
N/A
Novelty Value:
7.38(the Mario Clones brought it down)

A Room
Yes that's right, a room. Think about it. Uh-huh now it makes sense. Rooms tend to be quite popular with the ladies (and boys) if done correctly. They can range from a simple escape puzzle to a huge show-off of scenery in a giant house! Rooms are quite nice to see but they tend to lack gameplay (unless they're the puzzle gameplay). The Room theme can get old very quickly so try not to make so many levels with this theme.
Main Use:
Puzzle, Scenery
Novelty Value:
6.98/10

Forest/Jungle
Not too common but easily found. These settings are good for just about any genre or gameplay. Whether it be an action packed adventure or solving the mystery of the recently discovered Big-Foot's Grave, the Forest/Jungle will provide an excellent alternative for those overused caves!
Main Use:
N/A
Novelty Value:
7.93/10 (A great choice)

(That's all I can think of feel free to comment)

Need More!

Laboratory
This is sometimes seen but they tend to be hard to find. The levels I played with this theme were actually really fun. Provides some good gameplay as puzzles or platforming. Haven't seen any action gameplay yet but I'm sure there's some out there!
Main Use:
Puzzle/Platforming
Novelty Value:
8.79/10

Well I'm going to continue this post later I'm getting bored of typing it!
