"Bouncing Ball" creature help
Archive: 5 posts
Heyyo. May as well ask this since I'm on the help threads all the time now. I'm trying to create a single-layer bouncing creature just a tad larger than a sackboy. I've achieved this (albeit in a very dumb way) by putting creature legs on all sides (10-20 of them) of the circle, and giving it a brain and telling it to jump. The issue is this takes up a *ridiculous* amount of the thermo (two notches, and it'll go up to six since there will be three of them), and I'm looking for better ideas on how to create this. I've created another type, a circle with four rounded platforms, one on each side, and attaching these platforms to pistons. It bounces well and takes up considerably less thermo (since it's not a creature), but it's horrendously impractical and doesn't look at all like a ball anymore. Thanks for the help, Ryhas | 2010-07-20 22:43:00 Author: Ryhas Posts: 179 |
hmmm.. puppetry maybe? not sure exactly what you need. but an overhead piston pulling a block sideways, with a wench set to pull and push with a really fast increment? tweak till you get what you want.. then make the chain invisible.. then it will just look like a bouncing ball.. Not sure if this will work for what you need, but if so it will take up tons less space and still look okay.. If you need to kill the balls, I think one creature brain could be rigged to destroy the whole system. | 2010-07-20 22:47:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
Actually, I already tried the puppetry, forgot to mention that. I think it might work if I was more patient, but it was WAY too finicky. I'm not at my PS3 for a while, but I wonder if, instead of a winch, I used a piston? So two pistons: one back and forth, one up and down. That would make it MUCH more controlled and to my liking. I'll have to try that. However, at one point I'll need to do this in a cavernous area... but pistons and other connectors can go through walls right? Right. And no, I don't need to kill it. If anyone remembers the old game, Commander Keen 4, I'm recreating the bounders: http://www.commander-keen.com/characters/keen4/9.gif | 2010-07-20 22:51:00 Author: Ryhas Posts: 179 |
ouch very difficult then.. yes a piston would work better as far as control. and yes they can move through objects. I'm not sure how you would get it to bounce exactly like the bounders though... trial and error? if all else fails, I bet it would be no trouble in Lbp2. | 2010-07-21 00:59:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
Alright, turns out it works! It's not dead-on perfect, but it's pretty dang close. Now they're not bouncing off the edge of the world or getting stuck and, best of all, they're not taking up two notches on my thermo. Thanks for prodding my brain! As for LBP2... I may just totally revamp the level... I see so much more I could do. Anywho, keep an eye out for my Commander Keen level, if that's something that interests you. | 2010-07-21 18:25:00 Author: Ryhas Posts: 179 |
