The "Done anything interesting lately?" thread

Archive: 55 posts

I had some good times lately and didn't really feel right posting a thread devoted to them specifically... So why not a thread for everyone to share the cool adventures they've been on recently? Do anything awesome last week? No? Then do something awesome THIS week and then post about it, gull-durnit!

Back on the 9th I saw Tool in concert for the second time. This was actually my very first giant stadium concert. I usually only go to smaller venues, but I couldn't exactly say no to free tickets to one of my favorite bands, could I? I don't think "small venue" is in the Tool catalogue anymore besides.

The show was fantastic, we were good and close. Kind of a typical Tool turnout - that is, the crowd was wildly and ridiculously diverse. Maynard did what he does onstage, which is mostly hide in the background and then come out to do weird things like photograph his bandmates and share wine straight from the bottle. Behind me were a pair of grade-A douches who clearly carried Tool's messages of acceptance and one-ness close to their heart as they tried to boo the opening act offstage and scream obnoxiously and belligerently through every second the band wasn't playing. 2 rows down a brawl broke out during Lateralus. The giant standing in front of me sprang into action to help break it up. The girl next to me had her entire arm tattooed with various types of sushi. Highlight was when they set up a second drumkit in the middle of the stage and invited the drummer from the opening act onstage to play Lateralus with the band, including extended drum-solo-off with Danny Carey. You could FEEL this kid's excitement. I might have witnessed what may amount to the greatest moment of the dude's career. Plus it was awesome.

Aside from that, I just got back from a week in the Yukon. I wasn't thinking much about it beforehand because I've been swamped with work, but I really didn't expect to completely and totally fall in love with the place. The great north has cast its spell on me.

Night truly never came. I'd shamble out to the bathroom at 3 in the morning and it was like the pale light just before dawn. This was as dark as it got the whole week. It seems everyone that lives up there is an artist or a musician. I met trappers and ate home-made reindeer and moose meat meals. I climbed up what I called "Mount Doom" - a steep slope of rubble and bones to a giant raven's nest in the cleft of an ominously towering rock. I canoed across Shallow Bay, an enormous 30-mile green bay only 4 feet deep all the way across. I saw a turn-of-the-century styled vaudeville show and then hung out with some of its cast. I picked hundreds of wild strawberries and then realized I was covered in strawberry juice and my pants are probably ruined forever, the red stains probably contributing to the obnoxious pain I was given at airport security while the guards hovered intstruments that beeped at me and then proceeded to wipe me with their wiping instruments. I explored plenty of amazing hand-built log cabins and couldn't believe the land. I absorbed every turn-of-the-century gold rush vestige I could, from the buildings to the old gold dredges and museums. I walked barefoot over great sandy dunes surrounded by snowcapped mountains - the dried, sandy bottom of an ancient lake, all dried up. We drove the Alaska highway and the foothills of the mountains near the border were some of the most amazing places I've ever seen. It literally felt like being on the top of the world - you'd drive up, up, up, into mountains, into clouds, and a whole world is up there with freshwater lakes and ponds, and above you a low ceiling of ghostly cloud that feels like the roof of the world.

Already I have plans to return to canoe the 5 day journey to Dawson City and to bathe in the hotsprings on a winter night beneath the Northern Lights. I might even pursue a job next summer teaching filmmaking up there. It really is an absolutely spell-binding place.

How about everyone else - Any adventurous summer trips going down?

I pulled a one-inch splinter out of my hand.

You don't understand, you see. It's not like every other splinter that it's a millimeter long and the tip's stuck in the tip of your finger. No, I managed to get a one inch splinter in my hand. It broke into four pieces. Luckily, it was very superficial. Using manicure instruments, a small key-chain Neosporin sprayer, and a pair of tweezers, I had to cut through the top layers of my skin to get it out. Pulling all of it out is probably my greatest achievement to date. I think. It makes me feels like those guys who operate on themselves.

So there is this small, slow fly hovering about my PC monitor and drifting back into the darkness. after so many times I really am getting irritated so I figured it was time to take it down. I opened the nearby window first but as usual they pay no attention to our offers for them to save themselves. Then I remembered I seriously dislike killing flies or other insects purely because it always leaves a little mess wherever they got squished, I'm too lazy to clean that! So I saw a pint glass or two on my desk and I decided I'd try catching it in one and covering it, then releasing it outside.

50 failed attempts later... I was getting tired of it, I had put the glass down. I said there was two, one was empty but the other had some water in it still. I had been using the empty one but I mistakenly picked up the one with water in it. As the fly came back once again I lunged the glass at it.. SPLASH! Feck.. I got water all over the place! I rushed to grab something to dry it up, when I got back I had a closer look at the crime scene. The water had gone over my couch, which had assorted things on it. But I found out something I thought was very odd, my couch is.. waterproof! It's made of something soft, the kind of thing I'd have thought to lap up moisture. But the stitching pattern is like tiny dots, I've heard on some nature program tiny bumps on somethings surface can make it waterproof so that's my theory as to why the water is just sitting on top in water droplet form. I even pushed some around and they merged into bigger blobs of water.

Did you see Noam in the Yukon? I would have had to!

I went to a camp in Essex to look after 12 year old kids from my school that I just left. You expect them all to be thick and boring to talk to, but some of them are genuinely interesting and fun to talk to. Some of them added me on facebook. We all had a big group each to look after and I got every single one of them (21 kids and 5 16 year olds) to rave to my beatboxing! xD That was awesome. Massive rave moshpit!!! Do you know what they are all obsessed with though? Dirty things that I can not talk about here! I know right??? Oh well... A few of them are learning to beatbox now and whenever I am on facebook I get messages telling me to rave! I love little kids. Wait, I mean, err... well... hmm... I love those guys.

I finally completed Okami on my Wii! Man that was one cool final boss. I'm a bit upset that I have to start the game again, I wanted to explore Nippon, and I don't really want to have to play through the whole game again. Ah well, I'll leave it a few months and see what happens.

Oooh, and my Google Pen (http://www.google-store.com/product_info.php?products_id=1007) arrived today! It's a laser pointer, a 1GB USB stick and a pen! And I paid the cheapest delivery, and got it in 5 days of ordering (my friend said it would take along the lines of 2 weeks, his did)

Well, almost was headed to State for baseball... well, kind of.

Bottom of the last inning, down three runs, runner on second. I hit a homerun! Now we're down only one run. After a few more batters, it's bases loaded with two outs. Then the guy hits a fly ball and we lose...

It was still fun though

"It was fun"? No wacky French misadventures? No priceless art heists? Did you do anything while you were there that you've never done before, or that might scandalize your mother if only she knew about it?

Took the wife and son to "Aquatica" over the weekend. It's a huge water park near Sea World in Orlando. Very cool! My son was pretty scared to go down those huge slides early in the day, but was having a blast after a while. I really want to go to Texas and go to Schlitterbahn... That place looks really fun! I'm also thinking I may have seen Aquatica on one of those Travel Channel shows too!

I wrestled a goose. No seriously, it isn't a joke.

I've always had a little farm outside with a few chickens and recently we got a goose. It was my job to go out early and feed it and the chickens. When I was going into the goose's pen I tripped over a piece of metal it had been snapping at (the evil little thing). It waddled its way over quickly and started pecking away at my jeans. I was seriously scared by now, as my cousin had half his finger bit off by an angry goose. I threatened to kick it (the way you'd try to scare something off) and it took it as a challenge. It widened it's wings and squawked. I got up and ran into the house... forgetting to shut the gate. It ran after me the whole way to the house. Any passers by the road would have laughed their heads off. I wasn't laughing! I got back to the house and got a brush to spook it the whole way back to it's pen.

Ok, so I didn't really wrestle a goose. More like encountered an angry one. I just can't look out the window at it now. I'm not feeding it again!

Bowling, followed by fries and milkshakes at a diner, til 3 AM. Pretty old school. There were like 12 of us, 2 of us guys. Kind of overwhelming because of course every lady focused their attention on me. Didn't let it get to me though, bowled a pretty solid 32. I go hard all the time.2010-07-22 17:15:00

I met my girlfriend for the first time... seriously.
We met online and have been talking and that stuff but today it is confirmed that there is some serious stuff going on. You can't really feel close like that online.

My girlfriend lives in Oulu, which is quite far away from Espoo, but this week she is visiting her sister in Helsinki, which is close to Espoo so I got there and met her. We were alone in her sister's apartment for a while... and had a good time.
Then we went to the beach, ate some food and were together for the entire day. (seriously, from about 1PM to 11PM)

The best part is, we are meeting tomorrow again
My life is looking happy again.

It wasn't really recently, it was like the beginning of summer, but MTV came to my school at the end of the year and they held auditions for the show Made. I auditioned and made myself out to be some huuuge nerd. I told them that the whole school viewed me as the best gamer and that I'm regularly challenged by other people in the school to Halo matches or World of Warcraft duels (two games I don't even have.) I think she knew I was just kidding though. She asked how I was with the ladies and I said "well, my mom and my cats like me."

So, the beginning of summer, guess what? I got a voice message from the woman who did the interview. She wanted me to call her back, so I did, but it went to voice mail, so I left a message saying that I had a busy schedule of World of Warcraft and Halo and she was unprofessional for not picking up. She didn't call back. Instead, they chose someone else at my school, but she stopped doing it once they wanted her to say stuff like "I'm the queen *****!"

For those of you who want to know, I wanted to be made into a parkour champion.

So, in conclusion, I almost did something interesting.

Well, that's the funniest image I've seen in my head for some time. You go into the goose pen and trip. the goose starts attacking you. You try to scare it, and so it chases you. You run like the dickens as it chases you all the way to your house. You emerge from the house brandishing a broom, and chase it back to its pen. Well played, sir... Well played!

I just saw a pole blow up, that's the biggest adventure I've had in weeks

I once saw a basketball hoop get struck by lightning about 20 feet from me - right across the street in fact. I was waiting for the bus in the morning as a kid when it went down. The whole group of us, about 4 kids, seemed to decide on the same course of action following this violent spectacle. We first screamed as loud as we could, and then proceeded to run around in circles, the chief thought at the time being, "holy crap, lightning!"

Played ping-pong for my first time. Pretty fun. You really have to learn to be dainty and watch your aim, holy crap is that ball a wee little fancy-pants.

We just turned it into a show-boat festival. If it is at all possible for ping-pong to devolve into a hilarious chaos of ridiculous physical comedy, we surely pulled it off. Next time we'll have to bring a camera.
