Oh, so Microsoft's EyeToy has a price now? Pretty expensive for an initial price. I'm sure it'll drop once Sony reveals their initial price for the Move.

I still prefer "Natal" more.

The thing is with natal you only need one, but with ps move for multiple players you have to buy a few which adds up very rapidly. So I don't think the price is that bad, probably won't be getting it though

Oh and i thought move had a price already? I know i seen it on an Irish site so.. lemme take a look.

lol just realised I called it Natal... that name is a lot better imo but um yeah.. Kinect...

This is general gaming, I think we can safely discuss any console here without fear of the thought police hearing us.

That is a bit narrow minded, I think there is easily Xbox 360 owners here who love this game.. a lot, in fact I have a 360 myself!

Well, I disagree.

Those who like Xbox can talk about how awesome this is.

Those who don't can talk about how suckish it is.

Everybody wins!

But I personally think Kinect is bad.

Kinect is actually a pretty good idea in my opinion. It's not original, but it's still a good idea. Personally though, I think it just won't work, and the only people that will purchase this are the families and kids which don't play games much. So Microsoft clearly aren't going to make as much as they may hope from this. I mean, seriously... No hardcore gamers will play this for more than a month, they know that no real gaming can be sucked out of the Kinect, they will put it in the shed the first time they get tired. The true fact is that all of the people that play games often prefer the good old fashioned control-pad.2010-07-20 20:24:00

Meh, he's new. No need to squelch him yet.

I just feel that the initial pricing is too high for most people to take the initiative to buy. I mean, it's better than any "Wiinie" invention I've seen, but it believe that the market isn't ready for another expensive product. We've got 3DTVs, new smartphones, more add-ons like Netflix and Facebook, all of these money-raking items that'd already set people back hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and with the current economy, I don't think people are up to the risk of being set back even more, particularly with a product that echoes the EyeToy of the past and the Wii "shovelware" titles of today. If they were to drop the price a few dollars, say to $100 or somewhere around there, I think it could be profitable.

Besides, there hasn't been much advertising of the Kinect yet (due to the Xbox Slim's airtime), so I'm still skeptical about this new "peripheral" being profitable.

http://kotaku.com/5591724/microsofts-take-on-the-cost-of-motion-gaming

Yeah... Like how Microsoft tried to rationalize it by saying you must buy the Wii Balance Board.

... I mean, why'd they ever add that? ;o

Plus there are no games I see that look anywhere interesting... D:

Not that I even HAVE a 360... but at least MOVE I kinda see some attempt at making it last... Kinect just seems like an amazing piece of hardware that has no real use.

... and Alex, do you even play LBP? I always assumed you hadn't played it in forever and just hung around, skirting the line of total banhammah. Hey, look, you did it again when you insulted the new guy! I've always wondered about how you manage to avoid it O-o

... not that I ahte you or... /sniped

Anyway, Kinect looks amazing as technology, but I see nothing worthwhile.

... I WOULD say there might be some... games that WOULD be useful for it... that Microsoft wouldn't allow... if you know what I mean :kz:

... though apparently there IS a game where you talk to an 8 year old boy... and there's only one potential market for THAT kind of game, so I unno :/

Well in that case, you should learn to word sentences better. Because your post basically said,' FANBOY!'.

I'm not buying kinect, and i think it's stupid.

I will look at the games that there are before spending $150 on my 360.

And, I think that people should be allowed to talk about any system and/or game in the "General Gaming" area. LBP might be exclusive to the PS3 and PSP, but that doesn't mean all of the site's discussions have to be.

I think Kinect looks pretty good and seems pretty innnovative, but I myself need something in my hands to play. I'd have to by a Move controller just to hold it while I'm playing Kinect! 2010-07-21 21:19:00

meh, Kinect supports 2 people. ($150)
the MOVE is (both the wand and navigation) around $100. this is for only one person.

so that is $200 for MOVE...hm...

Not to mention you'll need a pseye for maximum effect if you don't already have one.

I am not a fan of the wii controller so I can't say I am very enthusiastic about kinect or move. The whole act of standing around waving arms etc is not my thing, I prefer to play with a regular controller, it's how I have always done it and feel most comfortable. The only thing I see these being slightly fun for is multiplayer madness but for solo playing I prefer my controller thanks! The one thing kinect attracts me by is the fact it has no controller and tracks movement. How well it can do that is still a mystery to me although I have heard good things from a friend who had a go of it. If I can get a shot of it at a friends or something I'm all for it but I just can't see myself buying either of these without testing it out first.

Move + sub = $80, so that's only $10 more than kinect.

The problem with kinect is that even immensely fit people wont be able to play the majority of games for too long a day. and without buttons it is just the eyetoy but a teeny weeny bit cleverer.
Kinect will not do too good IMO.

Move on the other hand, it is a bit better. More precise, and the fact it has buttons make the games better.

Not only do the controllers have more buttons than the wii, but HD gaming is what makes the move good.

Now do I think its worth it, not for me. However families will be able to enjoy it.

I wouldn't really call Kinect innovative it's basically the PS Eye but it tracks you in 3 dimensions instead of 2.

See this is probably the one thing about kinect that has me intrigued. It looks very energy consuming so it could be a fun way to raise your heartbeat for that x minutes it's supposed to be at fast pace per day.

One thing from this thread i don't agree with (other than the fact that we can only talk about Sony) is that it won't sell well. One thing everyone should know by now is the Microsoft will advertise the **** out of their products, and this will be no exception.

And families who want games to play and already have an xbox will probably buy this over buying a wii/PS3 separately. I don't like it, but it will more than likely sell very well.

It probably will sell well, but I don't think the games will, it will lose developer support very quickly and the only games will be first party games.
Which isn't always a bad thing, but I can't see Microsoft making anything fun.

What's the point of this. Nobody will play it for more than a month.

The point is Foofles, that Micro$oft doesn't really care if people just play it for a day and throw it away, or break it or whateveer, but that they bought it, as long as its being sold, it doesn't matter how log it lasts, at least to Micro$oft it doesn't matter.

Its the same with the Wii to be honest, its not really a hardcore long term gaming console as there are so few good games being sold for it, but as long as people bought it Nintendo are happy.

I wont be buying this.

Its only different for Sony because of how much it was costing them, it was only recently that Sony started t break even on the cost of a PS3, they were dependent on software sales (and are still) that is why we have perks like free online, because they have to keep us playing.2010-07-23 08:34:00

I'm pretty sure it WOULD matter since I read that every Kinect costs around 150 dollars to make... So Microsoft wouldn't be making money off each thing. So in order to make money, they would have to actually sell software- which has been the primary business plan of both Microsoft and Sony to this point.

So, if people buy an Xbox and a Kinect, Microsoft wouldn't really have made much money. I'm pretty sure they would have lost money, actually.

Microsoft would want the people to keep the Kinect and buy the games that come out for it, and keep buying games for it. Otherwise, they lost money.

I think Kinect has some potential to do some pretty cool things. However, I haven't seen it implemented in a way that really excites me yet and I'm not sure the tech is as good as it needs to be to do those exciting things. For example, I think it'd be awesome if you had a game like Mass Effect or Fallout, where you could actually ask the NPC's questions and they would understand you or react to your facial expressions, etc. But if the voice recognition isn't top notch, then it'd just be a mess.

Anyway, I don't plan to buy Kinect anytime soon, but I hope some cool stuff comes out of it.

I agree it can have some interesting potential, but so much seems a mess to implement. Like that idea mrsupercomputer mentioned of being able to question NPCs yourself, that's a great idea - but in practice it would end up like a glorified text parser. I can imagine NPCs constantly going "I"m sorry - I didn't understand that".

These were wet dreams of overpriced marketing executives. No serious game will stem from Kinect. But of course everyone will buy it, just like so many people ran out to get to PS Eye and play with it for an afternoon, just like everyone and their dog ran out to get a Wii and throw it in the closet a month later.

Hell, the best game for the Wii (I M O) is WII SPORTS. Sure, there are some GREAT games. But do any of them actually use the motion controls in an intelligent way? Almost all of them have the "wiggle the controller to attack" style approach.

But in Wii Sports, it actually acts in a coherent way. You really feel like you're playing golf, or tennis, or whatever. I haven't played Sports Resort but I imagine that to be a good Wii experience as imagined by the people that designed it.

Yep, Kinect can't distinguish between fingers.

That means that the Kevin Butler "pew pew pew" game won't even work. D:

Wow, having read that I'm actually pretty shocked at some of the specs. It no longer has the processor in the device (relies on the xbox) and has a resolution of 320x240. Seriously!? That is awful. Your image on a HD screen will be a massive blur. The PSeye is actually double that resolution.
And without being able to track fingers, that rules out having and guns in games (well, unless you say BANG every time you want it to fire LOL).

Jesus Kinect looks like fail.

That was one of the first things rumored and teased on, holding your fingers out and pretending to shoot. If it cant do that then all it can be used for is rubbish party games that people don't want to play.2010-08-11 13:41:00

^EXACTLY.
Kinect costs $150
Kinect can't register fingers. Most games are impossible on it.
How do you walk around if you have limited space?
Can you even walk around?
Is it anything besides rails?

MOVE costs $50(sub is optional and a lot people have a PSeye)
With MOVE you can use an analog stick to move around.
Any actions that the motion sensor can't do, you can map it to a button.
MOVE registers in the z axis so it follows all movement is 3D space.

Wii, can't do anything.

Which one is better?

Indeed, this.

I do like that for Move if you don't want to put your money down on a sub controller quite yet you can use the PS3 controller with one hand for it. Obviously not ideal, but would get the job done for the short term. Which would probably allow me to decide whether it's worth it.

The controls are too much of a gimmick, you swing within a 70(just an example number) degree angle of any given angle and it registers as a predetermined slash that you have no control of besides being in a general area to the actual anglle that the game processed

Its like setting a proximity sensor to 130 degrees and walking into it, yea you made it in the necessary area, but is that nearly as accurate as a 1 degree proximity?

You can pretty much do most of the stuff that Wii can do, without using buttons, on an old Eyetoy if you put enough programming into it.

Not trying to bash it, its just... well, it was outdated before it was even released :/
(and yes I know that, technically, all technology is outdated by the time it hits the market)

I'm not really that fussed about Kinect yer it looks good but there is no good games for it. Just all family games what I am not really interested in maybe if they bring out some shooters like call of duty maybe I will take more notice in it but until then I will not be getting it. But on the ps3 side Move has some good games coming out for it so I might be getting that.2010-08-15 09:47:00

Kinect is ultimately too expensive for casual gamers.
There are no games yet that cater to the 360's "hardcore" audience.
Basically, Kinect is a failure. Too expensive for soccer moms when they can just buy a Wii and too basic for the 360's audience.
I'll give it a year before devs stop making Kinect games. It's just not worth it.
