First Person Sackboy?

Archive: 21 posts

Just wondering with the funky new camera business, could you have a camera that points directly sideways. So it looks like you're running towards and away from the screen instead of sideways.

It's probably the closest we could get to having a real-3D first person type thing, especially if something complicated could be worked out like following the viewpoint closest to the screen, the no split-screen thing is what complicates it the most.

If you're not following so far (i suck at explaining stuff), a platforming level would sort of look like this

(totally an excuse to fiddle with my new art program :3)

For 'FPS' levels you'd sort of be shooting stuff infront of you to, and moving between the 3 layers by moving side-to-side.

Edit: Sorry just realised this is more suited to the "Speculation" forum. I was gonna say i'd make a project out of it but there's no point starting early if i don't know it's possible yet

I don't know, I think you can go completely sideways. Unless I'm mistaken, one of the cinematic camera shots displayed in the E3 video was reversed; that is to say that it was facing the opposite direction of the regular camera, down at the book with the candle wax "seal" on it.

hmmm it might work but a flaw would be switching detections when running.2010-07-21 02:26:00

If that was possible then you could always add a sideways gun that allows a Semi 3-D FPS experience!! I did hear somewhere LBP2 had some amazing Camera options... also adding to that in a level they shown a Sack boy flying a machine and you could see his back... doesn't that mean they are going down the course sideways or there is more than 3 layers... Could there be a setting to allow infinite layers?? Possibilitiess are endless!2010-07-21 04:32:00

i don't think the camera can go that sideways, but i could be wrong. The game isn't out yet.2010-07-21 04:57:00

I'm sure cinematic camera's can. The normal ones, though, I'm not so sure... 2010-07-21 05:00:00

If the director of LBP2 challenged the community to create a FPS then I dont think he will make it this easy to get one... Even though on was already created in LBP1... Look at Warlord_Evil 's level.. and his level does meet the requirments for FPS The cameria is in first person perspective and you shoot a gun.2010-07-21 05:08:00

I believe it was said in the E3 conference, by the people who went to play LBP2, and by some other reviews that that's one of the few things you can't do.

Also, have you thought how it would work with more than 1 player at all?

People keep asking for this, but don't think the implication it brings, sure it seems great and sounds good and all...with one player.

So how exactly does this work with 2, 3 or 4 players m8?
the cameral leaving off far ahead for people in the fron whil the guy at the back blocks everyone;s view with their sackboy in his extravaggant costume (or even without it)?
Would people just "dissapear" if they get too far and teh count down to get back end?

What if there's a slope or a wall?
Well there goes the camera.

Not to mention the immense lag it would cause, you think the lag's bad with regular gameplay, then you do not wanna play like that, its just like in any MMO, looking directly down will reduce lag, because the game doesn't have to process as much, looking forward means looking at everything in front, EVERYTHING.

It would have som many glitches and problems...

(I'm sorry if i sound harsh or anything, not meaning to, just have problems choosing my words.)

Its just people don't seem to think off all the implications that it would bring because they're too infatuated with their own specific idea for something that they cannot see beyiond that.

Srry dude, but i don't think direct frontal view is a good idea.

Hehe reminds me of LBP1 thing where you put a camera view completely facing whatever direction u want (left right) and the make a cutscene speech with same view! oh and totally an excuse to mess up your picture!

Oh ok. I was just wondering because i bought this magazine the other day (Edge) and they said that you could make a full 3D fps. I knew they were talking out of their **** but i felt like giving it some thought anyway

Or, it was a cut to a different scene. Which one seems more likely and easy to you?

Problem with warlord_Evils FPS levels is you can't aim. He is so swept up about having a 3D model gun that prevents him moving it that he denies aiming is that important. He said something like "i don't understand why people want to aim". Skill in a FPS is about having a good aim, no one bloats about their lack of aim. He is more concern with working around the flaw the 3d guns gives him, and turning aiming fun into "oh don't shoot your gun for too long or it will overheat. Trying to not overheat is more fun then aiming. "

If you want to see a FPS with aiming (in LBP1) wait until i make my LMG helicopter FPS level.

If you want to see a great FPS, see my future LBP2 FPS level when i make it.

If your talking about a 3rd person view that is behind sackboy than yes it can be done. It is proven in IGN's preview. I'll try post it later.

I think it was said cutscene cameras can be rotated 360 degrees. They can be set so sackboy can or can't move, so if you set it so that sackboy can move, it's basically a normal camera with better angles. It'd be cool if normal cameras had that level of rotation too though.2010-07-26 17:20:00

This can be fixed extremely easily with draw distances, much like it is in an MMO.

Or, it was a cut to a different scene. Which one seems more likely and easy to you? That is definitely a possibility... However, I would like to think that Media Molecule would be smart enough to tweak one option to allow a full sideways view at least, if not full rotation.

From what I've seen you can't go full sideways, but it may change.2010-07-26 23:50:00

If you can go completely sideways, i'd imagine the controls would be an absolute nightmare (unless you're using a sackbot, or if you can configure sackboy's controls).

Besides that, this would be epic!

The controls would still be the same, except instead of keft and right it would be up and down to move.

If everybody got their own camera it would fix seeing ahead.
