The Ninja Trials of Tortuga Tower

Ninja Bunny:Trials of Tortuga Toweramblaze
Do you have what it takes to become a true ninja sack-bunny and conquer Tortuga Tower? This level is dedicated to the memory of the pet turtle I had as a kid.
Hey all,
First off I just want to thank the spotlight team for spotlighting "Of Mice and Moon Cheese", especially among all those awesome levels. Second, I have to apologize for not being too active on this site. I'm not a big message board guy and I'm really very noobish when it comes to message boards and internetz. I will attempt to post pictures and if I am unsuccessful you will see that I really am a noob.

About my level. I guess I was inspired by some of the previews for LBP2 and I wanted to make a tower type level. I tried to make the level as vertical as possible but since there are boundaries I had to include sections that weren't. As for the turtle theme: I just saw a picture of one that made think the shell pattern was really cool. So I just wanted to use the pattern and the color green. The ninja theme came as an after thought, as I was using spikes as my primary hazard. So I figure I'd go ahead and call it a ninja level too. So with all those elements, it seemed natural to include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle references. Oh yeah and bunnies.

I had a lot of fun making this, hope you enjoy playing it.

Yeah, the fact that this isn't a food level may come as a disappointment to some. Hopefully, it more of a pleasant surprise. That isn't to say that the level has no food in it because I made sure it did. lol. I'm slowly waning myself off the food.

I changed the name of the level to Ninja Bunny: Trials of Tortuga Tower but am not sure how to change it at the very top...Just shows how noobalicious I am. (I actually hate when people add "icious" to words to sound cool, but that was actually fun to type.)

Played this the other day, very slick. Not a big fan of the abundance of green but hey, not my level. Gave it 4 stars. 2010-07-23 11:33:00

Alright, I played this level fairly early on in my ridiculous session earlier (Musta' played in execss of 40-50 levels for the spotlight 0.o) so i'll try and remember as best as I can

Good Stuff :

- Great turtle theme and I liked the suprise TMNT boss fight ending (theres no way you can tell me it wasn't him (http://www.theworldofjoe.com/.a/6a00e553b724ae88340120a76e878e970b-800wi))

- Nice use of custom texture, I wonder how many other players will be ripping those stickers off the walls just to see what happens like I did in that beginning section. You got a good amount of mileage out of that one sticker. Even though it's simple, I did like its use on the bolted circles, because it was always half stuck in the wall it always looked like a turtle was hiding just off camera

- I liked the inclusion of the faux spikey circles to keep the theme of the level going well

- COLLECTABLE FOOD!!! Yes, good man.

Stuff to think about :

- I'm not a big fan of the basic wood material. I've seen a lot of good creators having strong stabs at trying to reclaim the basic materials from the waves and waves (more like a sea) of 'noob' levels, but I really don't think that this is the level for you to make such a stand. I think that the basic wood material is a very garish, standoffish colour and has a bold tone that needs to have the rest of the level geared around, maybe i'm thinking into it to much but I do think the green in your level clashes with it. I'd suggest using a much darker brown wood, or maybe mahogany. (What might look cool would be the old green wood)

- That section in your 4th picture (use image shack to upload btw, rather than doing attachments ) is very tricky, Maybe just increase the pause time by a fraction but I really am nit picking. My main gripe is the wood thing ^^

- The green stickering of the thin layer of ground was a bit bright as well, maybe apply one gradient black sticker to tone it down a smidge but other than that...

It was a great level, I really enjoyed it :star::star::star::star::star:

(So are you not going to make any more food levels then? Is that you done? :'( )

Wow. Thanks for the analysis asb. If I can call you asb. Anyway yeah, you make some great points. The very first thing I did when designing the level was trying to get a good color scheme. I experimented a lot with different shades of green. At first I wanted to make a darker level, since my other levels use brighter colors. I wanted to use lighting to give it more color but I am clueless when it comes to that. I tried it and it felt too boring and dull to me so I caved in and went with the bright green as the accent. The mahogany might look cool, I'll try it out.

It's funny, I actually toned down the section you're talking about. I had all the turtle platforms rotating instead of just 3. But I think you're right, a lot of players may be quitting out because of that early section. So slow it down some more huh?

Photo shack, thanks, I'll keep that in mind for the future.

I'm not retiring from making food themed levels. I have plenty of foods left to do. However, I don't see myself doing a pure food level again. I will probably make hybrid levels like Waffle Wasteland or Fried Fortress. And I probably won't make them until LBP2. So please hurry up LBP2 and get here.

Perfect, that's the answer I wanted to hear ^^

Also, if you copy the link to this thread from the address bar, go to editting mode on your sig, select the title 'Ninja Bunny: Trials of tortuga tower' then click 'insert link' then you can have the title of your level act as a link to this page!

It's what I did with all of my level links in my sig and it might garner you a few more plays too

Updates--Ok, I took some of Absebestos's's suggestions.

--I changed the plain wood material to eggshell. I'm happy with it, the pattern really works well with the theme. Wish I used it from the beginning.
--I toned down some of the bright green flooring.
--I slowed down the first rotating platforms section just a bit.
--I attached shredder to a piston to sway back and forth a little bit to give him more life.

Fun and simple gameplay, nicely wrapped up in a turtle theme. Very good job on this level, it was very fun to play b/c you have the pacing set at a level where each obstacle can be overcome relatively easy, allowing you to progress to the next. Again I liked how everything was themed to turtle and the boss was an amazing likeness of someone i seem to recognize from my childhood, althought to tell you the truth with tha laughter going up those last jumps to the top I was expecting a bowzer instead. Great level, 5/5

I know your not doing F4F but if you got time please try my "A Realm Forgotten" Thanks!

Fun level with nice simple platforming and a pretty fun (tho also a bit too easy) battle with the Shredder.

Thanks for mentioning the pacing. That's something I focus on whenever I design a level. I want my levels to be like Toyota--keep you moving forward (with faulty breaks). Heh heh. I don't like to be stuck or frustrated unnecessarily.

Its funny you mentioned Bowser because I was initially gonna make a Bowser type boss. But I went with Shredder instead just because I was a huge TMNT fan and wanted to pay a little tribute.

I will check out your level and give you some feedback since you seemed to notice the right things about my level .

Alright well my 7 days are up. Thanks to everyone that gave my crappy level a chance and to all those that gave me feedback. Coming to LBPC never fails to boost my confidence .

I'm deciding on my next level (hopefully the last LBP1 level I make) as I have a bit of creator's itch along with some free time (always a good thing). I'm thinking about making a Ninja Bunny 2, obviously in a new setting. But I'm not really sure about it. I might move on to something else.

I found this level on Cool Pages last night, and I loved it! Really fun to play and lots of character! I'm sorry about your loss, he must have been an amazing turtle to make such an impression on you in his four short months on Earth.2010-07-27 02:35:00
