The Forked Path

Archive: 7 posts

After finishing my last level and publishing it, I realized: I have the creating fever.

I also now recognize (thanks to feedback) that my last level wasn't as fun as I had hoped, but I am still a newbie to this create business. I also recognize that I do have a fair ways to go when it comes to creating a top-notch piece of work. That being said, I am going to extensively research fun levels, and also attempt to come up with new and fresh ideas that might have only been rarely seen in a level.

I already have a rough idea as to what my next level is: I call it: "The Forked Path".

It will feature multiple paths to the same destination, that is definitely the main focus of the level, but unlike "The Gears of Life", there won't be a ton of different "forks in the road", there will only be two or three paths available, each offering a unique path, encouraging replayability. I'm pretty sure that I want to block off access to the paths once you've chosen one, so that people aren't attempting to go back for being a perfectionist/completionist.

It will not be just solid platforming, but it should feature one or two large puzzles per path, or several small-ish ones.

I should also state that the level won't be completed until I manage to finish the Story (That shouldn't be too long, I'm almost done with Tinsel town), as I want to have a look-see at all of the available backgrounds/stickers/materials before I start doing all of the hard work.

Advice and feedback on the idea would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Great to see that you're getting into creating and that you'll be working hard to become a better creator. LBP can always use great creators.2010-07-20 00:22:00

An update to my level. I have stuck with a "forked path", but I have split the level into two separate playstyles: Platforming and Puzzles. This should prove to contain two separate gaming experiences in one level, and should extend replayability. This level is taking a long time, though, and I will be taking a break shortly due to the release of Metroid: Other M.

Let's see... anything else?

I need to form a background layer using multiple blocks, without it looking completely "brick"-y. Suggestions?

Have you played jackofcourse"s level "Clambering Crawlway"? He uses a block pattern that looks like tiles and it looks really nice. You could do something like that. A larger "brick-y" pattern might also look good.2010-08-28 03:32:00

Heh, if I'd seen this thread when it was posted I'd have suggested playing my level Woesme Kingdom for an example of a multi-path level, but I guess it's a bit late for that. XD2010-08-28 04:25:00

This idea sounds really cool, are you looking to have the forked paths it subtle places that depend of the decisions of the player (if theres a story) or a more bold 'pick your gameplay' approach? Art style is the difficulty here...oh CURSES. Now I have an idea for a level like this! Don't worry I won't make it, you thought a level first. I was thinking a comic book style level, you enter the book at the beginning and choose a 'path' through the book. You choose from which perspective the player see the story from, for example, you might choose to be a leading character from the 'good' team, (if thats the kinda story you would be going for) or someone from the other team etc. Or maybe the story could be about a group of people, and what path you choose could show you what happens to each character, giving you a fuller view of the story. It could have different 'forks' in each character's path and multiple endings if you are feeling ambitious!

Oops, getting carried away here, I think you creation fever is catching. Anyway, you don't have to listen to my creative babble, I just can't wait to see how this turns out.

*reads update* Ah, I see, Pick ya Gameplay it is then! Sounds good!

...platforming and puzzles...I am getting deja-vu...the Hoarder is invading my brain! ARRRGGGG!!!!
