Checkpoints, Lives & Dying

Archive: 7 posts

I'll start off this sub-section with a thread regarding the Checkpoints in LBP, the number of lives and what happens when sackboy dies. There are a few really simple things that would really improve the possibilities of designing levels without breaking the simplicity of the creator or the atmosphere of the game. Here's my pithces:

1) Adjustable number of lives
Currently, you have a set number of lives per checkpoint. Either 4 or 8. And each time you reach a new checkpoint, the number of lives you have is reset. This could be improved in numerous ways, but the simplest way would be to just have a tweak menu on a checkpoint that would allow you to set the number of lives the checkpoint generates. I'd also like to have a checkpoint version that would just carry on the lives you had left in the previous checkpoint. So if you died once between the last segment, this new checkpoint would only have 3 (or 7) lives for you.

1b) Unlimited lives
I would prefer most to have unlimited lives in my levels. They're hard enough as they are, I don't want an added annoyance of having to start all over in case you die a few too many times near the end of the level.

2) Death penalty adjustments
Currently, if you die, you lose 5% of your points (if you have 1000 points and you die, you'll have 950). I would like to be able to adjust how many points are deducted on death. This way I could better control the scoring of a level.

Very good ideas, really. I was surprised when I couldn't tweak the number of lives a checkpoint can offer, actually.2008-10-13 18:15:00

I agree if the person building the level wanted unlimited lives at a checkpoint that would be great. I played several beta levels that I thought were awesome. But they would have an area with to many hazards together. Or the idea the they had to get you from one place to another if it didn't work wouldn't have an alternate route. So I would just give up after using all of my lives and return to the my pod and play a different level. 2008-10-13 18:57:00

Yeah i'm hoping for this too as when i played levels in the beta and died i just went on to the next level. There is so many levels out there (and gonna be far far more at full release) that it's just as easy to move on to the next experience rather than putting in the time to complete a level where you constantly die. I think a lot more people would soldier through and complete levels if the lives were unlimited.
But for mini levels it needs a tweak as i would like the option to only give one life for some situations
So yes MM we NEED this to happen

well what would be good is the number of lives but having unlimited would be uncool because the entire thing of death is risk and pressure and when someones level is to hard and no one can complete it, then it a cue to the creator to take down the difficulty level so people get more satisfaction from that person's level and without lives there is not risk and for some that means less fun so mabey just the tweaking of # of lives would be the best thing to do

Cheers!

The big issue is telling the user how many lives are left per segment. Right now I don't think there is a way to see how many lives are left (other than the red ring around the checkpoint and music change when you are on your last life.2008-10-18 07:58:00
