I was thinking of getting a new domain with a new extension but can I legally use a trademarked name in the URL?2010-07-19 15:41:00

As far as I know you can.
That was a money making scheme some time ago.
People registered all sorts of company names with various extensions, .com .biz .org etc. and then sold them to the companies that were too slow at getting their name registered.

Rly, because I've been reading a lot of stuff saying that you can be sued for using someone elses name if its already trademarked.

The reason I ask is because I want to register something like littlebigplanet.co but I don't know if Sony can come after me for using their trademarked name.

In general, a company will probably only go after you over a domain name if you are acting in bad faith. Either because you are cybersquatting, using the website to badmouth the company/product, or passing the website off as being an official site from the company.

Fan sites are generally safe AFAIK, and even if, for some reason, the rights holder decides to take offense to your domain name, they are likely to send you a Cease and Desist letter first before engaging in costly legal procedures. *

* Again, I am required by the state of Ohio to mention that I am not a lawyer and that my legal expertise is limited to frequent visits of Overlawyered.com. These are purely my opinions and should not be considered as legal advice that I could get sued for.

Thank you for supporting the OP rather than make a stupid rude comment. So, I think I should maybe just take it and see if I hear anything from them. If they were to complain, I would have no problem transferring the domain over to them for free.

EDIT: Thanks for the help guys, but I think we'll be using lbdreamworld.com for our new site just to stay on the safe side.
Also, I think we'll start making some serious changes to the site so that people will stop referring to it as a joke. TBH, when we were first making the site, I was pretty much do whatever you want but now I think we'll make it so its more of a serious LBP forum. If any of you guys can suggest any improvements (in a nice polite manner) then I would greatly appreciate it. I want to get as many peoples opinions/suggestion so I can get a good feel of what needs to change.

Also, I want to thank LBPC and its wonderful staff and members for allowing us the opportunity to collaborate with its community. I apologize for all the previous mayhem our admins have caused. Dinner/Dave has given us some pretty bad rep here and I just want people to know that we are actually more open ended towards our users and what they're allowed to do.

I believe little big planets domains are safe over the board though. I remember a while ago hearing an article about a load of different domain names registered.2010-07-19 21:32:00
