Being able to "observe" your level being played

Archive: 28 posts

Being able to "observe" your level being played.

Personally I think this would be very helpful for beta/play testing.
When I publish a level I tend to "play online" and wait for someone to enter, then let them lead.
Sure you can turn off your controller at the moment, but then you can't communicate with the players (at least with keyboard, idk if mics can).

You could to see where people have trouble or get stuck, you could ask them questions (what did you think of that set piece? etc) or just watch or have a chat.

You could choose one of your levels to watch, and a notification could come up: "a random gadder/friend is playing your level! Would you like to observe?".
With an option to turn it off of course (with a random/friend option too).

EDIT: napero7's followup idea: A create mode version! You wouldn't get in the way (or "please pause" instead of smile!), and you could just watch how your friends create.

Thoughts?
Yay or nay?

Thats an awesome idea! I have played my levels online with random people just to see what they do, but this would come in handy 2010-07-19 11:01:00

If that was a feature, I would probably never leave my PS3, I would just sit there watching, it would become way too addictive for me..

Very good idea though, would love to see it implemented.

I would also like the ability to just watch someone creating... I think I could do that forever.
I know it's possible to just join someone in online create but that would make me feel like a stalker when I'm not doing anything.
I want to not do anything and just watch without being there... yay.

You mean spectator system

I don't know, it depends how LBP protocol will work, also keep in mind that LBP uses P2P, so to spec any game you need to host player console that might not have enough upload, on other hand it not really need any extra processing power since console since spec player don't need to processed just need to send the game state data to him that is already processed for player in the game. So as conclusion i think if only one player have power to spec (the creator of level) it should not be a problem, there might be problem with privacy thru, but i think it can be solved.

Essentially you could just be the fifth unseen player which wouldn't require much CPU power at all and I would have thought that it could be fairly easy to implement.2010-07-19 14:02:00

This idea sounds good, i actually agree this indeed would be good, not sure about "5th - 6th - and so on" more players idea, that sounds a bit too much, but the main idea sounds like a really good one indeed! 2010-07-19 14:20:00

Like a spectator mode? I don't really see the point, plus I would find it a bit creepy If people could just watch you, especially if it's the creator random level you?ve played.

If I show people any thing Ive made, to test or even just show em I?ll always sit back and see how they approach things. Thats normally enough to test things, I think just playing through and saying " what ya think" normally just gets back a "yeah was good, nice one" lol, just sitting back and not helping with anything is fine. Adding the ability to be hidden or just not physically in the game is something that isn?t really necessary.

Its still a good idea though, would be nice. Just find it a bit creepy you can be watched at any time.

Well Halo and Starcraft 2 for example got server-side demo recording and as know both developers use it to see what player do with there game. Hmm.... think about it demo recording would be good alternative to this too2010-07-19 15:57:00

Actually, maybe a setting would allow the 'Player' to not be spectated by the creator of the level. That would lessen the 'Creepy' feeling you have about it lol.'

Splendid idea!
I would be able to watch for any bugs or difficulties players have when playing through my level so I can fix accordingly.
If I were in a 'Spectated' level and I knew I was being spectated, I would get out my stickers and sticker the whole level.
...
Hey, it would be fun, right?

Have to say, this would be quite useful. Until now I have only had my little brother and sister to play test without myself playing and showing anything. Thumbs up for the idea! 2010-07-19 20:55:00

Totally agree, this would be a great vertue in any creator's arsenal.
also I would hardly create, I would just watchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatch
and watch.

It could be a good idea but I wouldn't like a random person watching everything I do in a level. Maybe an option to stop people being able to spectate you or a message like '________ wishes to spectate you' ?2010-07-19 21:48:00

Absolutely 100% yes, I want a spectator mode where I can jump in at any time and watch someone play my level.2010-07-19 22:42:00

I'd like that feature. As for privacy, players could be muted and have text not be visible.2010-07-21 04:30:00

If you have a USB keyboard, you can plug it into the PS3 and still use it with your controller turned off.

Though you're right, I'd rather have some form of "spectate" option. Even if it's not directly an option, I.E. you can turn off "invisible" logic in create mode and follow a player, playing it in create mode, while you fly.

A spectator mode is a GREAT idea! I used to play my levels with random people over and over again to see how they handled them, but I'd prefer to just watch after playing it a few times.2010-07-27 14:26:00

Ah! Yes! Loving this idea. A great way to implement a new form of playtesting for creators.
You could probobly do this with sackbots, but i bet it would take ahwile...

Man this would be helpful. I could finally see why my level gets rated 3 stars. Unless it's just haters 2010-07-27 16:29:00

I like this Idea, in fact more games need spectator mode, - i'd love to float around a level and watch how people react. some old fps's used to let you do this and loved it, if a game was full i'd jump into spectator mode and watch them play. and as soon as a person left try to jump in.

sometime just lurking was great as well.

It doesn't have to be implemented as a 'live' observation. Upon leaving a level the game can ask the players if they want to send a ghost of their playthrough to the creator. It'd effectively be a file containing controller inputs and the seed used for the random number generator, so the file wouldn't be that big at all. You could store perhaps five or six of the latest sent playthroughs, and the creator can watch them in their own time.2011-02-13 12:36:00

It's not that easy as recording inputs, there lot of factors on the level that may go random and make ghost function improbably. So state of the world need to be recorded. ofcorse thats possible to same as client receive player controls same way it receives world sate from the host via protocol... same as that state can be sended to observer live, only bigger limitation is user connection upload send state ti observer since game is p2p. Whatever it will be recording or live i think people will be happy

Also there other issue, worths of function it self to implement. LBP2 is not serious business and such function seems to not be much priority

I'd rather stick with the whole 'Invite someone and turn off your controller" system 2011-02-13 18:15:00

Ethically they would have to make a little message like the "so'n'so is joining" but something more like "creeperstalker321 is now creeper stalking you"

But its a great idea especially useful for those players who go brb or have their hands filled
