The problem is is that the only way I could see someone making a virus for the PS3 is using the linux support that has already been removed from the console. I wouldn't say it would be 100% impossible to create and send virus' through psn messages. But chances are its just a lie.

I got a message saying that in January you will need to be a PS+ subscriber to play online on PSN, which is obviously a total lie soo, yeah. Never listen to these chain messages.
You will not get free map packs, you will not have your account hacked and a monkey will not do back flips on your car bonnet.

Unless there is an attachment on the message, then it is 100% impossible for you to get a virus from a PSN message. If there is an attachment, I would say it's almost completely impossible to get a virus from it.

There are also many chain messages going around such as "post this to 30 friends to get PSN gift cards LBP2 beta codes" etc.

Just a question: What if you save an image from the internet with a virus attached and then send it? I'm pretty sure that's impossible because viruses are designed to mainly effect Microsoft computers and such (not PS3's ). I'm curious...2010-07-18 23:12:00

There was none attachment in the message, and I didn't read the whole message so it could have been a "Post this message to 30 people" message :/

You too? They're so annoying! Who would be gullible enough to forward it in the first place?

A virus in an image would need to be made specifically for the PS3, they have a similar thing for PSP that allows the boot up of iso files.2010-07-18 23:29:00

That's what I suspected. Do you know how I could go about making one?

At this point, I should probably remember:

Report him to PSN, it's clearly abuse and whilst it may seem like a harmless prank, fraudulent malware scares tend to be a massive nuisance.

I got a chain mail once it said. you will receive 4000$ on your psn account. But you have to be 97 years old live in an igloo in mexico, have $769,800 in your psn account. and must drink 3 gallons of pickle and lemon juice, in order to receive your amount. I LOLED2010-07-19 04:27:00

I actually know a guy that his friend send him a chain message and it says that if he send it to all of his friends and putting a code he will receive 50$ and it worked! D:
Then I went in my other account (with like 1 friend me ) to not have to spam everybody and then the code was expired
Or maybe he just tricked me?

For there to be a virus that affects the ps3, a hack would have to be discovered. As far as I know (I'm not a hacker, but I keep my ear to the ground), the only hack discovered so far is the linux hack found by Geohot (no real evidence was ever released as far as I know, but he's generally considered reliable). That hack needed to be run in linux before it could affect the ps3, so it couldn't be used for an attack through psn. It's possible that once that hack was used to open the system up, other vulnerabilities could be found, but I haven't heard anything yet so I doubt it's happened.2010-07-19 07:11:00

I wouldn't really report him, may be a misunderstanding, you didn't read it carefully alec, so you may just be confusing, perhaps he's some dude who's usename in something else is _Virus.

Plenty of people have used that as a username, heck, one of my old highly used alias' was Virus.

So yeah, unless he sends you another one and have proof it was a prank or a malware scare or whatever, you should just let it be, or you may just end up reporting some dutch kid who wanted to wadd you to his friends list...

I cant see that it would be possible to send a virus over the Playstation Network.

But a friend of mine said that they got hacked. It was after they hadn?t been online for a while, when they got back online and I asked if everything was alright she said that some one sent her a PSN message that had a redeem code thing on the PS store, you know the thing for beta?s ect. After she put it in it broke her Playstation, it wouldn?t turn on she said.

If its true or not I have no idea, but that?s what I was told lol.
But just through a message, I cant see that at all. So no worries

You can only attach pictures to a message with a normal PS3, now the people who install Linux onto their PS3's might have a chance to send a virus, nothing serious though if you deleted it.2010-07-19 19:56:00

Lemme get this straight? You got a spam message from a random stranger too?!

Remember earlier, when you sent my messages like...

"LiEk 0mG Yu hAz LbP2 bEta gaMesHaRe???"?

Well in between both of your message, some random guy sent me a chainmail message that I've never heard of in my life. I replied saying that I'm going to start reporting chainmail senders, and that they should stop being so idiotic and believing it.

Then I blocked 'im!

According to both my dad and uncle, both really big gigantic computer nerds (remember, PS3's are computers lol), there isn't a written virus code for the PS3, so you could only ask for people's passwords. 2010-07-20 01:27:00

I recently received a message quite similar to yours, Alec, but I cannot manage to remember the name of the sender. But upon receiving it, I just brushed it aside and proceeded to delete it. I'm sure it's fine and I highly doubt it'll do anything beside getting a tad bit on your nerves. 2010-07-20 02:32:00

Actually, that's one of the good reasons of why to use the PS3 browser, you don't have to worry about viruses!

I can go around any website without worring to catch a virus and stuff.

You could always get back at him by making replying a message but put in your text 0's and 1's and maybe some programming language logic that makes it look like it'll activate a virus.

Course with what rtm said about fake malicious software being bannable might not be such a hot idea, sure would be funny though
