Valve's Alien Swarm, Free

Hey guys, apparently Valve is continuing their move to put out free versions of some their Steam games. The latest addition is Alien Swarm, which I literally knew nothing about before finding this article. It looks kinda fun, so if anyone is interested, you might want to check it out.

On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam. In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you?ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

Aw, dang. I just checked the minimum requirements and my laptop can't handle it.

I'll probably still download it and just wait until I get a better PC. This game looks seriously fun. Anyone able to tell if you can play alone? I don't play many games on PC, and I don't use steam that often. Basically, I'm saying that I have no friends.

Edit: wait, it can be played alone. Hooray!

If they are giving source SDK out with this that means garry's mod will be buy-able without an extra cost.

Also Hybrid, thats may be your steam name, but I don't think it's your steam ID. When you sign up, the VERY FIRST name you use, is your steam ID, which is the only name you can use when adding someone.

The issue is processor. I'm nowhere near having 3 GHz.

This looks like a very good game that I might get, solely for the co-op aspect, God save me I love me a good co-op game.

Not really much of a catch though, that's steams doing not valve. I guess you need to buy something on steam to be able to use the friend system (and a free game wouldn't count). There's lots of really cheap good games on steam so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
After a quick search, there's 182 games under ?4, and 522 under ?7! 		2010-07-20 12:51:00

Okay just tried it and I gotta say it's alot of fun! I would probably pay up to ?15 for that.

I got up to level 4 before my bad internet got too laggy and I had to turn it off but it is really cool! I really like the finale's they have in the missions like the one with the cargo elevator for example. Too bad I can't add any friends because I don't have a game 		2010-07-20 19:49:00

One can really see the influence L4D had on this game... And personally that's a good thing.

The onre things I do not like about this game besides the lack of playability at launch is the ammo system. The first time I reloaded after a brief encounter and saw '96 ammo lost in old clip' I went WTF. I mean, this is practically the only game that treats ammo realisticaly. Now I have to resist the constant urge to press R every time it gets quiet.		2010-07-21 01:00:00

I was thinking that this game would be great on consoles except Valves campaign is pretty short and people wouldn't be able to create new content for it like they can do with the PC version.2010-07-22 23:58:00

This game is brilliant, the campaign is short but very fun, and it gets incredibly difficult on the higher levels.
I have played a few custom maps and I must say what people have made already is very impressive, I can't wait to see people actually release full campaigns.

Which leads me to my last words. I tried in first person, its glitchy you can't roll or shoot grenades propely but it is fun in first person aswell.

In the developer panel type

firstperson
asw_hide_marine 1
asdw_controls 0

That will change to first person
Hide the marine because they are still partly visible and not in a good way.
and it changes the controls so the mouse doesn't think you are looking in the overhead perspective.		2010-07-24 16:35:00
