Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

Archive: 21 posts

I found this on Steam earlier on and decided to get it. I'd been playing Oblivion over the past few days so it felt worth trying out.

People were telling me this game was good, but i had no idea! I'm kind of annoyed how much better than Oblivion this is in every aspect I've seen so far.
After 10 minutes of loading up the game i was bombarded with pictures of monsters much cooler than anything on Oblivion on the loading screens, saw a ton more customization and then found some dudes scroll and got launched 500 ft into the air. This game is FUN, and it just makes Oblivion seem like it went in the wrong direction in terms of realism.

I don't have much to talk about yet but what are your opinions on the game? And what crazy adventures have you got up to so far? :3

I totally love Morrowind, Oblivion kind of oversimplified the approach but is still a good game.

Morrowind feels so much bigger and varied, and the story is a lot more interesting. A lot of depth to Morrowind.

I like stealing pillows

I played Oblivion and loved it. And when I say loved it, I mean loved it for about 300 hours.

But I got Morrowind and I couldn't get into it, I found it really confusing. :/ I might have another shot at it sometime soon.

It was a little confusing for me too, but that was mostly just problems migrating from my snug ps3 controller to a keyboard and finding out how everything worked in comparison to Oblivion.

Didn't take me too long to grasp onto the quests though. I followed my tutorial quest-giver's instructions and ended up in some funky looking town. And after a good deal of exploring and figuring out what was what it turned out to be really similar to Oblivion. Go to a guild, do the quests and rise through their ranks!
Morrowind seems a lot more in-depth in comparison though, I'm pretty sure this one has like 6+ different guild things to choose from o_O

Edit:

Just hit a wall D:
Is there something more to the combat in this game? I spend 5 minutes clicking an enemy and probably land like 5/30 hits, i don't know if that's a mechanic or the game isn't doing a good job of registering hits.
Either way I'm dieing on the 2nd fighters guild mission where i only have to kill 2 bandit dudes :c

Yeah... that's the one thing I like more in oblivion. In morrowind the combat is pure RPG style, if your attack is low you end up missing a lot... you have to either raise the stat higher when you start or learn from a trainer if you want to land the hits.

There are tons of guilds in morrowind, all in depth.

I thought when i'd found my questy people i'd be sorted. Every quest i'm put up to ends up getting me killed though o_o

Is there grinding to be done? Or any tips in general on how now to die? I don't mind starting again if i have to

Morrowind has a really weird levelling structure... If I remember correctly it goes something like...

If you level 10 times in any of your major skills, you will gain a character level.
You can increase 3 different attributes each time your character levels, with a bonus dependent on how many skills you levelled up that use that attribute.

In a way it works like Oblivion that you don't want to level up too quickly or you won't get bonuses to your attributes. You should have your preferred methods of attack in your major skills when you start, or they'll be so low you'll constantly miss and get killed by caterpillars.

I'm checking out the mods for this :3 Something i couldn't do with Oblivion sadly, PS3 version.

I've made Balmora a bit more chunky, one of the first towns for those that don't know, it feels a bit more like a city now and got spruced up with houses to live in and lots of trees
I think the trees make my PC lag a bit though, might need to fiddle with the graphics a bit.

Oh oh and i got these awesome Demon races that you can start as, with chunky evil looking wings! All is good :3

Yeah there are a TON of mods to morrowind. And if you're one of those people that hate the lesser graphics, there are some mods that improve the texture and model resolution of many things in the game. But to be honest, at it's time, it was at the height of graphics.2010-07-20 14:56:00

The world is, in my opinion, much cooler and diverse than Oblivion's, but I hated the combat. Seriously, it would always take me forever for one of my attacks to actually hit a person. I hated that whole accuracy part of the game. I also really hated how running affected your fatigue.

Oh, and by the way, you can pretty much level up everything for virtually no money by using spells to temporarily drain your level and having people train you.

Little trivia... a friend of mine actually discovered most of the cheats and exploits in the game. Before anything was posted to any sites like gamefaqs or gamecheats or whatever those sites were called, he actually submitted it to them. I forget exactly how, but I think he came up with all the exploits to boost your skills insanely fast and get all the good armor right away.

Anyway, yeah the accuracy portion of the game sucks. You know, I still have it installed on this machine. Must play. I never did finish ALL the faction missions.

I only progressed past pilgrim in the temple once since the pilgrimage is kind of annoying.

I was never bothered by the accuracy you're talking about. I was probably so immersed in the game I never paid attention to it.2010-07-20 15:26:00

Are their any mods to reduce the graphics? xD
I'm always happy to get a game running more smoothly on my sucky computer.

Maybe there's a mod for the accuracy thing too, it is kind of frustrating and makes it kind of luck based.

I've ran the game on 10 year old laptops smoothly.. How bad is your computer, exactly?

I'm sure if you went into the options and turned everything down to a minimum... lowest res, turned off shadows, low draw distance, etc. You should be able to run it ok.

The accuracy is dependent on the skill for the weapon, if your skills are really low (10 and below) I guess it'll be a problem, but if you rolled your character with 20,30,40 + etc. in the stat you should start hitting the people.

HAHAHAAHA I remember the first time I played and I got into a fist fight with one of the old women in Seyda Neen, she kicked my ***.

I personally liked Morrowind better than Oblivion.
I'm not much of an RPG kind of guy, but I loved both games very much.
I could play Morrowind for hours, but when I got Oblivion, it didn't blow me away as much as Morrowind.
/:

I totally recommend Morrowind to whoever hasn't played it.

If you are missing meshes (like if error messages keep coming up saying you're missing the files), then insert your CD into the drive, but don't run the game. Manually open the CD on your computer and manually transfer the "Meshes" file into the "Meshes" folder of your "Data Files" on your computer.2010-07-21 12:48:00
