Pop Music Appreciation

Archive: 52 posts

People are doing a little too much blasting from the past. How about little more positivity on the music scene today?

In my opinion, there's a good amount of stuff worth listening to, yes, even on the billboard charts. Like Lady Gaga, like Ke$ha, like La Roux. I listen to a lo of other things that are technically pop, if not always on the radio - like indie pop stuff. Vampire Weekend, Matt and Kim, Sleigh Bells.

Maybe this is more accurately a current music appreciation thread. But try to keep it pop-y. Metal has a thread.

I doubt this will get much attention but hey, worth a try.

You have a fair point. Lady Gaga and La Roux are bearable, but Ke$ha really gets on my nerves. Still, I think a thread like this is needed given all the 'old music' threads that have been springing up lately.

POP ON.

DON'T HATE THE BIEB. If the Bieb wasn't hard he wouldn't have Luda in his music video.

hard or not that cracker can't dance.

@resistance: I appreciate it, I understand that ke$ha bothers a lot of people. i find it funny when people are actually outright offended by her though, when she's clearly just being outrageous for the hell of it.

@evanesced: I would count them within the realms of pop, though I personally am not a fan.

oh, well, it's true, and you should! both The Fame and The Fame Monster are well worth acquiring, if not purchasing outright. which is what i did. it's really great on roadtrips with friends because no one outright objects to it, it's not really niche at all! yay

Alright so I discovered just today one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwnefUaKCbc
Janelle Monae. Her album The ArchAndroid is one of the coolest things if not the coolest thing I've heard this year. She has such a great mastery of different styles, but the album still follows some cohesive concepts. This song in particular has some pretty ****ing sweet James Brown funk thing going on. Funky dancing too. Big Boi is also awesome here

Deserving of pop star status, I hope she achieves it, with radio play and all. It's not like she's unknown but she should be better known.

Watch the video! Please

Pop is actually broader than you think, and if you might read my posts you could see that... not to be testy or anything but what I'm posting is generally a far cry from terrible.
I could show disdain towards what you listen to but I don't choose to. I give everything a fair chance, including metal, including pop. That doesn't mean I like everything.

Here's some awesome pop. Listen to it. Also she can ****ing dance!

Trust me, I used to be like you, and I gagged at the sound of 'pop' or 'RnB' or 'rap' or 'hip hop'. But you know what? That's kind of snobby. And snobby ain't too cool.

More people than who listen to our pop.

Although, pop is just generally hated.
Anyone who isn't a young teen usually prefers the underground stuff.

pop is a lot of fun to listen to, and there actually is, gasp, artistry in some of it.
it's really easy to hate because it's really easy to look cool hating it. i understand that, dude. the girls at school will find you very cool.

I really enjoy Maroon 5's music. Sometimes considered rock, sometimes pop, but it's nearly always good in my opinion.

Also, agreeing with monstahr, pop is a very broad genre. It includes rock to rap and everything in between. That's why you get such a diverse selection of songs in this genre. You see songs that are similar to rock, some similar to rap, some with both, and some songs that are totally different.

And, I'm sorry Bremnen, but many, many people enjoy pop. How is pop generally hated when the top 100 is densely populated with pop songs?

That sounds like a good idea, let's judge a song's popularity by its place in the charts. The charts are meaningless nowadays. Also, pop means popular, and therefore pop is always going to be in the top 100, because the top 100 is a list of popular songs.

I admit that some pop is genuinely good music, but an awful lot of it is just manufactured rubbish.

You completely miss the point of what piggabling is trying to say. If pop is popular, how can it be "generally hated"? It seems generally popular to me. Brenmen has contradicted himself, though. In one post, pop is generally hated. In another, he tried to tell us how he's edgy because pop is generally liked and he hates it.

Why would you go to such lengths to make fun of pop music in a Pop Music Appreciation thread if it wasn't to give yourself a pretense of superiority? People can like complex music and upbeat pop at the same time. Unless you want to lie to yourself.

Thats NOT Rock, and the 'Rap' is stupidly fake.
Top 100 means fans voted for it on the website, people who don't listen to pop don't care enough to go vote it down and you don't get a choice to vote for anything NOT pop so of course its all going to be pop.
Pop,post 1994, means anything written and formulated to what the label thinks will apeal to young teens. The people performing this junk have almost no ability or drive, they just do it for a pay check. Real rock and real rappers never see the charts these days, no matter how good they are. If you listen to rock from 1959-1980 you'd know that whats on tv is artificial bs and the rappers are so fake its insane. Since when have rappers become these illiterate, girly looking guys, from the suburbs? What happened to guys from the streets rapping about getting out of the ghetto and bettering themselves? The stuff they're selling to kids these days is all rich posuers who've always got what they want and never experienced hard times. REAL RAPPERS DONT USE SYNTHESIZERS.
REAL(male, duh ) ROCKERS DONT SOUND LIKE GIRLS(no offense)

Its generally hated because the MAJORITY of the GENERAL population is not young teenagers that don't take the time to look for music.
It seems popular because they don't show anything else. If they don't give the youth options, of course their going to listen to this **** and like, except for the ones who look for the underground/old stuff.

Real artists never see the charts? Arcade Fire's new album hit #1, fyi.

I really hate this underground/old > mainstream/new garbage. It really gets my goat. I do take the time to find new artists, I find great new stuff daily! And I still like what's on the radio. So don't give me crap about options. I have options. I explore those options. And at the end of the day, Tik Tok is just as appealing to me as a good underground thingy.

Also, I don't believe you know much about rap. Just sayin'.

This is about appreciation. Hate has no place. Go home, kid.

I was pretty specific about who I was talking about, you obviously don't fit that description so chill dude.

I mix my words up and can't get my point across all the way. :/

I don't like the stuff that you can tell is fake music, that you KNOW the person doesn't write their own stuff, and probably lip syncs on stage, just by listening to them.

People whos music is so generic that you can tell the label wrote it for them so they could sell the same thing all over again.

Or just people who sell out :/

"REAL RAPPERS DONT USE SYNTHESIZERS."

That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard any one say about music! let alone about Rap!

Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to take you seriously after that?!

holy ****!

okay, okay..back on topic. sure the music industry is a Business. The suits try to finance acts that a large demographic will like. it's not so different from a musician who plays "Freebird" to warm up a room. I've played it many, many times. Do I personally like "freebird"? heck no! I think it's a sloppily written, self-centered song that is really boring to play, but more people than not, love it. It's pop.

You can't fault the industry for courting the favor of it's audience.

Also, I really have problems understanding how someone claiming to like music can say they don't like a song based on it's catagory.

[/rant]

-edit-
I know this is not current, but I think it fits. It's Soulless, cheezy, and totally plastic, but I love it!

wait, wtfs the synthesizer?
I think i mean auto-tuner?
whatever its called, if you have to alter your voice it means you don't sound good enough on your own.

I didn't say that they financed those acts, I said they write their music for them, tell them how to act, and only put them on tv if they do what they're told so that the label can sell their image.
Very few of the people who end up on tv even write one line of lyrics after they make it to hollywood, they let some suit write their stuff for them.

Greatest post ever. I can't think of a modern rapper who doesn't use synthesizers. But what does that matter? What do synths have to do with rapping? The synths on Kid Cudi's album were amazing.

Don't ever talk about Claudio Sanchez like that ever again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4-0UvCfYps

Mock him if you want, but he looks tall as **** live and would probably beat the **** out of you (and most other mortal men). Not to mention, as girly as his voice is in a lot of songs, he's a great singer.

Have you been keeping up with the rap scene at all? Are you telling me that Gucci is a girly looking guy from the suburbs? Even if a rapper is girly-looking and from the suburbs, why does that matter if he's a good rapper? Are you referring to Justin Bieber? He's not a rapper, bro. Gucci Mane is a rapper. OJ da Juiceman is a rapper. They're from the hood. OJ comes from a long line of dope runners. But guess what? OJ is absolutely awful. (Gucci's decent.) You sound more interested in the glamorization of THUG LYFE than the actual music.

I'm pretty sure by top 100, piggabling meant in terms of album/single sales. Those aren't voted for on a website. Those are based on sales.

You didn't answer my question that I asked at the end of my last post. "Why would you go to such lengths to make fun of pop music in a Pop Music Appreciation thread if it wasn't to give yourself a pretense of superiority?" You just sound against mainstream music in general.

Okay, this is on topic, right?

Some pop-rock. I love Coheed and Cambra's pop-rock stuff just as much as their heavier stuff. This song is especially corny, but I love it. I'm not sure this is what you guys would consider pop, but it sounds very poppy to me.

No, I hate the 'gangsta rap' stuff.

*pointedly ignores the above*

@ Awesomans: Great posts! maybe it's just me, but Coheed and Cambria reminds me a lot of Rush with that geddy lee like voice.

You may think crazy for this, but here's another one who's voice has that same lovely timbre.

The Blue Man Group is so... different, but don't get me wrong, I think what they do is pretty dang cool!

I can't help but laugh at some of those "pop" definitions! I think they need to be re-written... They're just so, stereotypical.

Back on topic, here's some good, wide-variety of music. All classified as pop if you don't believe me!

Straight No Chaser- Pure voices, no instruments. Remake songs more beautifully than any other group.

Train- Sings of love a lot, but you can't argue the wonderful lyrics!

David Cook- And for anyone who says pop can't be rock ;] He's got a really strong voice.

Now, these may not be "your kind of music", but no need to argue. Gosh...
