shifting 3D levels to create/reveal passages

Archive: 10 posts

last night, while racking my brain to figure out something that would set a level apart, I came upon the idea to build a large structure where each of the three planes was separate from each other. Rooms formed by cutting out sections would seem to be simple 3 deep areas, but various switches would increment the three planes relative to each other creating new passages between scenes.

So two questions, first is it possible?

Second does any one know of something like this out there already?

I'm sorry, but i have no idea what you're trying to explain here, so i can't help you out, can you give another example if you don't mind?2010-07-16 12:24:00

Hmm, I'm not sure how to explain it...

Start with a solid block of stone five inches high, eleven inches wide and one inch deep.

Now cut out a 3X3 square one inch from the left side in the interior of the stone. You have created a room that is one plane deep. If you cut out a 3X3 square one inch from the right side of the block, you now (effectively) have two rooms set in stone.

From left to right, you have one inch of stone, three inches of empty space, three inches of stone, three inches of empty space then one inch of stone. All one inch deep.

If you repeat the process twice more, stacking back to front, you end up with two rooms that are 3X3X3 but completely inaccessible to each other.

now, extend the cut-out one inch square on the bottom right corner of the right hand 3X3 cut-out but only in the back layer.

Leave the middle layer and the front layer with a 3X3 cut out. You will not be able to see the extra tab if the front two layers are in place.

From the middle layer, remove the cubic inch that is one inch to the right of the tab you just created...

From the front layer remove the cubic inch that is to the right of the one you removed in the middle layer.

When the layers are aligned, you will see only two rooms that are not connected. But if you shift the back layer one in to the right and the front layer one inch to the left, there should be a passage that can be traversed from back to front. ("f" indicates this is in the foreground, but you can pass behind it. "b" indicates that this is in the background and you can walk in front of it.)

I hope this explains what I have in mind. I think this could be a very interesting way to open or close routes through a level and I'm wondering if anyone has attempted this or something like it or knows of a level that uses a technique of a similar nature.

Good idea, weird way of carrying it out.
Still it will work fine, might i ask what type of level you are planning to use this in?

So your saying there's an illusion, where only at a certain camera angle, you can see a doorway that you can go through? Sounds difficult, but I guess it can be done?2010-07-17 00:17:00

@Rouriki- The concept I'm working on would be a pyramid themed maze. I've just completed a very simple test bed level to see if the concept would work. (If anyone is interested in seeing it in action, let me know and I'll make it available for viewing/playing.) And it does. on a small scale. Not sure if it will work on set pieces that cover most of a level. (I guess it's time to scale it up.)

@warlord-evil- The passage would not be accessible until the scenery was shifted either right or left.

Maybe you could make a little demo level or give us some pictures to help us out? It sounds cool, but I'm still not to the point of understanding what you're doing..2010-07-17 15:38:00

I made a little demo. how do I make it available for others to view?2010-07-17 21:53:00

Publish it, I'd like to check it out, you can always delete it later until & re-publish it when you've finished making it.2010-07-17 22:00:00

OK, it's published. It's called "moving planes experiment" There is just one example of what I'm talking about here and the beginnings of a larger scale experimental template.

edit 7:40 pm tried moving a very large object and added a second experiment to the level. I think this is going to work out very well.
