Mining Mishaps - NOW PUBLISHED

Hey all!

Well, it has been a while since I have made my first two proper levels - The Mine, and The Mine 2 (If you haven't heard of them, you can take a look at my sig if you want) I was basically thinking, because I believe that my level making skills have improved since then, whether or not I should remake them - maybe even combining them both together in a remake - kind of keeping my favourite bits from both levels, and even adding some new bits in, as well as giving the whole thing a drastic overall in terms of appearances. Your thoughts?

For those of you who were interested in testing, BETA testing is now open
If you'd like to test Mining Mishaps (Went with this name, although thanks for all your suggestions!), simply post on this thread, or PM me and I'll PM you the code, which you'll need to enter into my Lockbox level in order to get the key to the BETA version of this level. Please note that it is not yet completed, (bout halfway through - something like that), but I could really use some fresh eyes on this one! Notice any bugs, glitches, or even just to point out bits you like or dislike, or improvements you think could be made, leave some feedback here - it will be much appreciated! After all, this is a BETA, so best comment on anything you think could misbehave or damage the level - better changing it now than later on!

I think this will be a massive improvement - remember Comphermc's Aperture science levels? And compare to the recent remake...

Hey, I tried the lockbox again and there was a door that opened, I guess it's just blended in so well, that's why I didn't see it at first. Anyway, I didn't get to finish the level, I only got to play p to when Im climbing up to the top by swinging on the rope because I had to get off unfortunately, but so far I think the scenery rocks, I couldn't hear the music or sound effects because I had to keep the volume down but I'm sure it was good. The platforming was nice and I think it's great so far. Plus, I love the explosions! Great job and I can't wait to see the completed version. Hey, I finished testing a while ago but it's been very busy. I hope it's okay if I mention it on my blog for more beta testers. The more the merrier. Anyway, great level. I love the scenery, explosions, everything. Awesome job and I can't wait to see the finished version. Plus, I think the 2 player challenge is really unique to get extra points. @Dragonvarsity - glad you liked it! I'm in the process of trying to make that bouncy cart easier and the two player was entirely coincidental how I made it - just realised that you could stand on the platform and get up there, as long as the roof wasn't too low!

@ Ghostrider: Thanks for testing it! Nice to hear you liked it - and yeah, I know the bouncy cart seems to be misbehaving a bit. Anyone got any suggestions HOW I can get it to behave?

The bounce cart is actually in a prize bubble... in the middle platform during the whole bounce cart thing...

Oh, a new update, awesome! I'll try this out tomorrow and tell you what I think. Also, I just noticed poll above so i voted. And of course I put yes. ....... <_< >_>

Edit: I played it and it was definitely easier to bounce up, thanks for that. Plus, I love the newest area added. I've always loved choosing where the platforms go so it was great to see it used here. The level is fantastic so far and I didn't have any bugs with this new update at all.

I agree. Also, I played it and LOVE what you have so far. I 5 starred and hearted it because it is so awesome that I can see a community spotlight in it's future, once it gets done. Thanks everyone for your comments! Sure, I'll look into make that grab switch a button - or I might give it a shot using proximity switches and a slight delay - I think the latter seems like a better idea, as then the appearances won't be damaged by the change. I'll give both ideas a go though, and take it from there

Hey - it didn't work out too well - to be honest, the grab switch seems to work slightly better than both the buttons and the sensor switches! See, the button makes the whole feel a lot uglier, and the sensor switch seems to activate prematurely - even with a timer. And then when the player wants to activate the sensor again, they have to make their way back into the radius. Sorry guys!

Well, I could have a 2 second delay. But as well as all of this, I've noticed if you stand on the edges, you don't go very far at all. You have to stand right in the middle to get the proper effect - so a grab switch would really be the only way to make the height of the jumps reasonably constant, whatever position the player is standing on. And making the cart stick to the track may be slightly more difficult than you think - there are already two winches holding it in place to stop it from toppling over, or being pushed into the big hole in the middle.
(Go ahead! Try and destroy it!)

Yes - Another Update!
I've added another little room on, with what I think is quite a neat little puzzle (If I may say so myself!)
Could I have some feedback on the overall length of the level maybe? Is it too long? Too short? What I really want to know is, should I carry on with the gameplay, or finish it off (I've got some ideas about how to finish it off, but I'd love to hear yours!)?

Cool! But how is it at the moment in terms of length? I only ask because of the thermo, and I want to be able to finish it off properly, as opposed to abruptly because of thermo issues.

Oh and explosions are really hard to perfect!

Hey, I played the newest version and I like the newest puzzle but I can't even figure it out and am worried lots of people won't. Anyway, for such great detail I think it's a pretty good amount but if you have more thermo then I'd add one or two more parts and maybe some secrets and at the end it says how many secrets did yo find and then you get more points for the more secrets you find. Unfortunately, it looks like soon it won't be up to me whether or not I continue - I've got about a quarter of thermo left, and I want the level to go out with a bang, rather than a scoreboard just appearing somewhere. So I kinda need to start work on the ending.


I did have an idea, which was to make a companion level which would be a kind of Mine Survival challenge, which I would release at the same time, but which would only be accessible by finding the key to it somewhere inside the actual level.

Got any good "Mine Survival Challenge" ideas? I'm sure I could do something with that bounce cart if I can get it to work better - such as the carts moving through a room, and you have to bounce up and collect points, whilst not being swept away by the carts, and the carts slowly start to get quicker. Something like that?

Maybe after the puzzle you run and the ceilings up very high and it's just a huge room but then an earthquake starts and you have to run while gigantic rocks are falling on the ground from above and the pieces of the ground break off and fall in the bottomless pi when the rocks fall on it since it's very old and fragile. Once beating that you fall in a small and different pit and you bee a bunch of rocks fall and you are now trapped in that pit and you have a torch next to you and it shows the scoreboard so if you wanna make a second level for the remake which I would love to see and beta test then you can instead of escaping so soon.

As for the survival challenge, i've got nothing.

hey man i finally just got round 2 playin the level 4 u again, the cart worked as before slightly annoyingly lol then it just stopped workin completely ive no idea how or what i did but it just totally died on me i thought i should probably come and tell u,

Thanks for your suggestion! I've already got a good idea of how it's going to go down - it's gunna include a mine cart ride - but I like what you thought about the ending - that also leaves rooms for me to make a second if I want, but I have the option of also not making it if I don't feel like it

Ghostrider: Yeah, I know that mine cart glitches a lot. I'm not sure what to do! I'll fiddle around with the pistons a bit more - I don't want that happening when the actual level is released! And the final puzzle - I know that the buttons are in quite close proximity - but I'm not sure I'll be able to move them much without damaging the aesthetics of the level - I mean, did it cause a lot of bother, or just a little?

Thanks for responding and if you went with my idea you could still not work on it because say you get trapped in that pit forever or there could be a way out and you continue your journey but anyway, I'd love some minecart riding.

New Update is now up!
This will probably be one of the last updates before releasing to the public - the level is pretty much finished - even though I did have to make that stupid mine cart and track all over again...
So yeah, if you could play it and tell me what you think - and also, to let me know of anything else I can do in order to improve it, or any niggles you've noticed that I need to look at.

tested worked an absolute treat definately spotlight material, the bounce cart worked better than ever i found it sometimes doesnt work depending where its sat which could cause a few headaches, but aside from that its a superb level mate a million stars 2010-08-06 07:29:00

Yeah, the cart doesn't work in some areas - but that's intentional - such as below the swinging sponges. This is because if it did work then, then it would break that part of the level. Glad to hear you liked it though - do you reckon it's the right length?

As for messaging Rtm - I'm not sure if he'll even reply to me! But sure, I can give it a shot!

So they length's good right? And it looks/feels good?
It's really hard to tell - I've tested it soo many times now, and I know how to do everything so perfectly, that I can do it quite quickly!

Anyone found any secrets yet? There are 3 - but (Well, I think) they are really well hidden. You DO get a points bonus if you find one though - just wondering how hard they are to find! And, at the end of the level, you're given a race sticker - use this at the beginning to find out how to play against the clock!

yeah length should be fine mate and it definately looks and feels good 2 me, ive not managed to find any secrets but ive got a bad eye so meh lol ill have another go later and bear it in mind and spend about half an hour on it 2010-08-07 05:14:00

Now I know I haven't played it yet and everything but, I say keep the secrets how they are. Anything that is hard to find or whatever add a lot of replay value to the level. I could potentially see myself playing this level many times to find the secrets. I am not sure HOW secret they are, obviously, because I have not played the level, BUT I remember a level I played numerous times to find all the secrets.

If you make the secrets easy to find, what's the fun in finding them? Also, If you only have three secrets, In my opinion, they have to be hard to find. It's just not enough if there's only three [easy to find] Secrets. HOWEVER, if you want to make them easier I suggest making a few more so, for example, There are 5 easy secrets and maybe even five easy ones and 1 or 2 hard ones. I don't know, Just an idea.

Again, I feel kinda wierd commenting on this since I have not yet played the level, but this is what I suggest for ALL levels with secrets.

You make a good point! I would love to add MORE secrets - but unfortunately, Thermo probably isn't going to permit it - so I'll leave everything how it is. I do wish the level was longer, but *shrugs* it is what it is!

It'll probably have to released around next friday - this is because I'm going to be going away for a week - so I won't really have time to advertise the level, give back feedback and basically encourage people to play it - as well as trying to make sure it's avaliable and in eyesight of the general LBP community (I know people don't like republishing - but the spam that's out there, I'm sure it's okay to do it once in a while - especially when it's not just a bomb survival or a level that took an hour to make).

I'm also thinking of having a little competition in the first little while after the level is released - such as if you find all the secrets and upload the image of the end, where it says how many secrets you found, on the thread, then the first 2 people get an exp prize. Still an idea though.

Sorry again for the long wait!

I played the newest update. I can't believe I couldn't figure it out before, anyway, I love the minecart ride. The first time I rid it, it slowed down and stopped on a track and I had to re-try but then it worked.2010-08-09 15:32:00
