Portal Tech Demo

Portal Tech Demosteve_big_guns
A single room demo based on the game Portal, which allows the transport of player and companion cube through a portal and out of another.
I spent a few days working on the logic to try make the most accurate portal device I could. After finally getting it how I wanted, the thermo requirement was just way too high to incoporate the system into a level as 10 teleportation walls was all I could get into a one before it would overheat. I tried thermo glitching but It still wasnt enough and would freeze the ps3.

I decieded to create this tech demo to show how it works. Theres no challenge or goal to the level, but I tried to make it look as interesting as possible without looking crowded . If your interested in the concept then you may want to check it out.

Its pretty good! Too bad you couldnt put it into a level....atleast not yet. Hopefully LBP2 will allow you the breathing room you need to make this a level.

Edit: When the scoreboard comes up what is that liquid/gel like stuff floating around. I didnt see it while playing but only when the scoreboard came up.

Yes, this is a pretty sweet concept and if you would actually managed to make the whole level this would've been amazing.2010-07-15 20:58:00

Thanks everyone . I had a thought a just now about maybe creating a new profile and publishing 20 short levels, each with a single area to complete. I prefer to have it all in one though.

The gel is a bubble captured from the water pack dlc. I captured it from a friend in create.

Im not sure how much difference the new logic system in lbp2 will make. I can thermo glitch in lbp1 which would probably give me more to work with than what I would save inb lbp2.

That would be awesome, it's like you need to complete every stage (level) to unlock the next

Maybe if you got rid of the song there would be more space for gameplay.2010-07-16 13:25:00

Cool! I checked it out and it was awesome, it stinks that it hogs so much thermo, but I like the new profile idea.

I thermo glitched the music in at the end. The demo uses about 145% thermo.

Yes . But they would be the shortest levels ever lol.

Ill think about it . I want to start something else at the moment, but if I get motivated to make the first level, ill probably do the others.2010-07-16 18:56:00

It's pretty cool. How it acts is nice, but perhaps the visuals could be improved, like on the portals... So that they are set almost in the wall, not in 2D like that. It's still a very well designed portal tech demo... I have the bubbles, but what is the giant thing spinning around in the bg?2010-07-16 19:13:00

Portal itself is pretty short anyway so it wouldn't be too bad

This level is really cool, and removing the paintinator to move the cube works really well!

How could I set them into the walls? You cant shape things in that dimension. A sticker on a thin piece of material is the only way I can think of, but it would look worse. The background is a decoration.

Thanks . It works best in single player, as it deactivates the power up while in close proximity.

Amazing. Just amazing.
I dunno how your head didn't explode with the complexity, but i'm well impressed.
5 stars and a heart easily.

This was a triumph.

I'm making a note here: Huge Success!

Great Demo, I'm sorry to hear that the level overheated from it.

At first when I fell into the room I thought "Okay, so I'm going to shoot a wall which is going to make a checkpoint come out, and then the other wall's gonna have a checkpoint and as soon as I walk into one checkpoint the opposite checkpoint will be activated.

It was actually a lot more complex than I imagined.

:star::star::star::star::star: & a <3

P.S. Saw it on Page 4 of the Cool Pages... I'm always hoping some good levels will pop up, and yours happened to, so it shows that the cool pages aren't lost yet.

keep on doing your research Steve-b-g. I know you can do a full level out of it sometime, maybe in LBP2
cause i was pretty impressed by the mechanic.

i wish i could see this, it sounds awesome... voltiare messed with the idea in h.a.t.e. 2 but didn't really have any visual effect to it or sack+object teleporting.

there are many ways to place a sticker. work the angle long enough and you can get a deco like the mirror shield sitting on all 3 planes on the interactive sides of a skinny slice of dark matter in the field of play... 'course i can't really see the effect or the play so it's hard to recommend anything :/

Ive seen a lot that used that technique, which is one reason why I decided to try to come up with something better and act/look more like the game.

Im still thinking about a 20 level series, each with a single area to pass. I think it may be best to wait for lbp2 considering how close it is to being released. It works quite well, although it would be amazing if it was possible to carry the players velocity through the portals.

I thought about emitting a stickered block of stone into the stone wall sections, so it appears that the sticker is being emitted onto the wall. It looks a little dull though. Maybe if I can get a decoration to create the prtal effect also it may look ok.

I didn't say set in the wall, I meant almost... I'm sure one decoration or another could give the effect of a portal if you spun it on an incredibles drill object that is compressed into a piece of stone...

It was a great demo though, and even though the portals weren't instantaneous (not possible in LBP actually), it was still pretty realistic, expecially the fact that the box got transported too.

I gave it 5 stars, and a heart, methinks.

I'm online tomorrow, so I'll play it before I get all wrapped up in refining my TARDIS!

It sounds good, and any teleportation methods not using the conventional death -> checkpoint method has got to be pretty neat!

Just amazing! I had had this idea but me being not very good at tech I couldn't even begin to try to do it, and the you went and did it! The only way this could be better is if you could carry momentum trough them. http://www.littlebignetwork.com/images/smilies/lbpsmilies/wink.gif Although I cant help thinking that you would have had enough thermo for at least a puzzle or two If you did use the still alive music.

Oh and those gel bubbles, you said they were made with the water pack, how exactly? What bubble did you capture?

5 star level! http://www.littlebignetwork.com/images/smilies/lbpsmilies/movingp.gif

I hope this gets incoporated into a level. Epic beyond belief!

Perhaps with LBP2 round the corner (a long corner I must admit) maybe we'll see it again

I hearted it. It's the best Portal level I've played. I think you should wait for LBP 2, and then make a full game out of it.2010-07-21 23:34:00

In LBP 2 I think they mentioned there will be a teleport function, so it will be much easier to make! (Still difficult, but slightly less for you Steve!)
