Interview

Archive: 192 posts

I realize I wasn't able to formally interview someone who works for Media Molecule, so I decided to take a chance and try to set one up. It's a longshot, but I've written up a very well-worded email and have sent it to them via their email(I sent it to their general one and I guessed at their semi-personal ones, meaning I found their first names and added it to "@mediamolecule.com") and MySpace(they have a MySpace profile, would you believe it?). I am hoping for the best, but I don't expect much. I just figured I'd let you guys know.

By the way, here's what I wrote to them. I'll let everyone know if something does actually happen:

Dear Media Molecule,

I am interested in getting an interview with someone at MM about your upcoming game LittleBigPlanet. We are a group of fans who are very excited for your game(I got a chance to play an early build at ComicCon, and have written up an article with every piece of info I could get my hands on), and we'd love the chance to ask someone who works there some questions about the game. We understand you are busy people, but we just couldn't pass up the chance to talk with someone there. If you'd like to discuss it,my email is confusedcartman@gmail.com.

Thank you for the oppurtunity,
LittleBigPlanet Central

P.S. Our website is http://www.lbpcentral.com/, stop by and check it out when you get a chance. We are still in our infancy, but we work very hard and are very excited for LittleBigPlanet.

I realize I spoke for everyone in the message(with lots of the word "we"), and I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to undercut anyone. I just decided to take a crack at it, and that's the best I could come up with.

EDIT: I have heard back from them(would you believe it?), and they have instructed me to leave a message with MediaMolecule's main phone number about it. I left a message at their number(I almost recited the email) and I hope to hear back again. If I don't, I will call back when they are actually working(probably 2 hours from now, it's 7 in the morning for them).

EDIT 2: I have talked to someone at Media Molecule, and they are going to contact me to set up an interview. I am so excited, ecstatic, if you will. I guess we can use this thread to set up interview questions you'd like me to ask, and we'll have an exclusive with Media Molecule! My god, I am so excited.

Now, for question posting. I would prefer you guys post it in the form of a question, such as "Why was the 4 player restriction imposed? Any specific reason?" instead of a general idea. I will keep a running tab of all of the questions we'll ask when the time comes.

Questions

-We are a little unclear as to the purpose of the moon. Does it represent local save space or online hosting space? If it is local, then is there a limit to the amount a player can upload?

-We have heard of special "triggers" that detect certain events and deploy an action, such as the breaking of a rope. Could you elaborate on the types of triggers you are including, and how many you plan to include?

-We've heard a little bit about the enemy AI in the game, and are curious. How in depth are these AIs, and what options do we have for customizing them(if any)?

-We've heard of things like water, gravity manipulation, and gameplay recording(possibly YouTube integration). Are those planned features for the final build, or were you thinking of releasing it via DLC after release?

-Speaking of downloadable content, what are the plans for future DLC? Will there be any and what will it cost us?

-It's also come to our attention that users who qualify may have the option to charge for their levels later on. Is that still planned, and if so, how do users meet these qualifications?

-Is it possible to reward a player a download key to another level upon completion, to create an overarching story while requiring they play them in the intended order?

-What can fans be doing now to create their own stickers? What formats are supported, what resolution, and how does transparency work for those wanting to create stickers other than square ones?

-We've seen the video screens that display information in many levels. Is this something we can create and customize, or an option reserved for the single-player aspect?

-We know wooden logs can be set on fire. Will you have other element interactions, such as ice melting or fire extinguishing?

-If you edit an item that's in the game, such as a vehicle, and save it, do you have the option of keeping the old version as well as saving the new version, or would you be forced to overwrite it?

-Speaking of saving vehicles, we have heard of an in-game system that allows you to save an item as a "blueprint" in order to place that item wherever you would like in the future. How does this system work?

-How dark can we make a level? Can we control the degree of darkness throughout the level(such as making the sun rise when the player reaches a certain point)?

-Are there any weather effects, such as rain or fog?

-At the end of a level, are we awarded a medal based on our performance? If so, what factors are taken into account when it comes to determining which medal is appropriate?

-Are we going to be able to give detailed text descriptions to our uploaded levels, or is the keywords/tags system the only way to describe our levels from within the game?

-We have heard talk of a public beta happening sometime in September. Can you talk at all about this, and if so, how can one go about being included?

-Will LittleBigPlanet's online play be region locked, or can we play with our friends overseas?

-How does local play work when migrating to a friend's PS3? Can we bring our sackboy along, and if so, how?

This is truly awesome Cartman, but you do realise you may have dropped yourself in hot water with the tutorial filming? Nah just kidding, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I would personally like to know if it is possible currently, or if there are any future plans, for making rooms or 'pods' that allow more then four sackboys, and I'm sure everybody would love to know the extent of the complex triggers.

Yes, both good questions, although I was assured no more than 4 people would be allowed in a room at a time. I think it would be best to ask why they imposed that restriction, actually.

I'll keep a running tab of the questions we want to ask in the first post.

I assume they imposed that restriction so there isn't any difference between local and online play.

Friendly bunch though, I hope you get to ask a wholelotta questions.

Here are mines

"The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters."

** What are the limitations on the size of a user created level?

Is the restriction based on the filesize or on the used maximum amount of field?

Can't wait though to make a large level.

** How many AI options can be attributed to one object?

So is it possible to make guards you have to sneak past or else type thing?

** Is it possible to manipulate gravity?

Think along the lines of creating an Escher like level or perhaps even Little Big Dead Space, lol

** What are the plans for future Media Molecule DLC? Will there be any and will it be free?

first
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/20/littlebigplanet-allows-users-to-charge-for-created-content/
followup
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=200029

So at launch everything in the LBP universe is free. What are the plans beyond that? What are the plans on giving users the option to let you pay for their creations (yuck) and what are you own plans on additional content down the line.

** The sackboy responds to voip, does this mean you could actually make a cutscene? Is there even an option to import sound into a user created level?

Anyway, LBP is the reason I bought my PS3!!

Good effort. This is the kind of activity the forum needs. A very mature and thoughtful approach to MM. If I may say one thing, the best results from an interview is obtained if you find the right amount of detail in the questions. If you ask thing in too much details, they will be unable to answer for two reasons:
1) they don't have all the details set yet (the game isn't done yet, after all)
2) they don't want to give too much details to the public

I'll try to figure out a couple of questions I might wish to be included. Don't know if I have anything that's going to get any answers, though.

Also, it's a good idea to have some back & forth discussion as to how to phrase the questions right, to get the answer you want.

Feedback for your questions but mainly directed at ConfusedCartman

** What are the limitations on the size of a user created level?

Is the restriction based on the filesize or on the used maximum amount of field?

(I'm sure it's been said somewhere before that it's filesize, the area isn't limited only the amount of objects you put in it (Although obviously having a larger area will use more data) but we could ask to confirm this)

** How many AI options can be attributed to one object?

(Good question, I think it may be better to ask what the AI options include first. How in-depth do each of these 5 'brains' go and are the can you tweak the AI assigned to each brain?)

** Is it possible to manipulate gravity?

(Again, a good question, Cartman, try to get info on the Water and Gravity issue)

** What are the plans for future Media Molecule DLC? Will there be any and will it be free?

(This is a good question - Ask if they still plan to allow users to charge and what the qualifications are before they are allowed (It was said in the interview that only once the individual has qualified do they have the option - I think it may have been edited))

** The sackboy responds to voip, does this mean you could actually make a cutscene? Is there even an option to import sound into a user created level?

(Brilliant question! Try to get info on the story behind story mode. does it have a full objective? i.e. saving a princess - or is it split into individual stories with each location (They have split levels into groups and put the group on the world map, I think. The russian 'collector' seemed to be a big boss for the end of that 'world' think mario and the different levels and different worlds) and also ask if about the cutscenes; will we see any?)

It may also be nice to ask some questions about Media Molecule rather than LittleBigPlanet.. depending on who you're interviewing, you can ask how much they enjoyed working on the game, what challenges they faced, if anybody else wants to read that stuff?

How many craters are in your moon? What happens when you reach the limit?

Will there be support for your own songs, or even just MIDI support?

Can you upload your own background for levels?

There's a lot of character customization. At E3, a Boston Celtics sackboy navigated the level. Was that premade, or can you really make a sackboy in any jersey or uniform?

If a felt tree falls in a forest when no Sackpeople are around, does it make a sound?

Here's a bit of inital feedback:

Some questions might already been answered before, and might be skipped (I'm not saying you have to, of course! I'm just talking here )

I know the answer to this question:
Why was the 4 player restriction imposed? Any specific reason?
Answer (I remember hearing/reading this from an interview, don't remember which):
More than 4 players resulted in chaos and didn't work well. They found out that four was the optimal number (and logical, since very few games support more than 4 players simultaneously).

Question:
We have heard of special "triggers" that detect certain events and deploy an action, such as the breaking of a rope. Could you elaborate on the types of triggers you are including, and how many you plan to include?
Comment:
Great question!

Question:
We've heard a little bit about the enemy AI in the game, and are curious. How in depth are these AIs? Is it possible to specify a certain path an enemy must follow, or even a location it must attempt to reach?
Comment:
Another really cool question!

Well, I have one question of my own, regarding triggers & AI:
Question (if not answered by the initial trigger question):
Will it be possible to have triggers linked with enemies, such as have a trigger activate when you destroy three specified enemies, for example clear out a room from monsters?

** Is it possible to manipulate gravity?

This has also been answered before. The answer is that initially, you cannot change gravity. They might add this feature after the release of the game. The same answer applies to water.

I feel it's pointless to ask the water question again as it has been asked numerous times before. You won't get a definite answer other than along the lines what I just wrote.

But this is just my opinion.

"Are we able to upload "level packs" to make it easier for people to download story archs and connected levels, or will we have to search out the various levels of a creator's story arch?"

"Can local (offline) levels exceed the 5mb upload limit?"

"What formats can stickers be (gif, jpg, etc)?" (gif may be a reasonable substitute for not having video embedding capabilities)

"Are we able to integrate video into our levels?" (I don't remember if this was confirmed or denied)

"Can you upload your own background for levels?" <----- Good question bbroman. Seconded by me (this is an important one!)

I'll add more if I can think of some.

PS. You're the man Cartman!

EDIT: This should be a good one: "In certain videos and screenshots, there appears to be layers of the level between the playable area and the background, like some sort of skybox for filling in the scene. Can you give us any details on this?"

Answer (from an interview a while ago):
Yes, you are able to link levels to each other. In addition you are able to hand out level access as a reward for completing a previous level. This is one way of creating campaigns or stories that span over multiple levels.

If a felt tree falls in a forest when no Sackpeople are around, does it make a sound?

I don't think it would make a sound even if there were people around to hear it

And Linque watch the double post. So you can miss out gravity but I have a suspicion that they are working on/planning water. There was a description for an item that said "It floats" so I would like you to keep the question about water.

as for few games supporting more then 4 players.. well, thats only true for offline, but okay, it does seem unlikely. I would just like to know that if there was a high enough demand could they make it possible?

on a side not, a 4 player max will keep lag to a minimum, so thats great.

Lastly, I would leave the AI question more open. Following your own advice.

EDIT: Harris, you can upload whole patches, with levels and items etc, im fairly certain.

You're not serious about calling me out on the double post, are you? It's a good habit to make separate replies when you reply to different people's posts. The two posts I made were replies to two different persons, hence two replies.

Anyways, they're not going to reveal something as massive as water in a simple interview, it's pointless to ask. PR 101. (again, just my opinion)

The 4 player question was answered before. And from a developer point of view, I can say that it makes perfect sense that there's a 4 player limit. If you asked 'could it be possible to have more', they'll say that they never rule anything completely out, but it's not planned at the moment.

"Does the editor allow for true pitch black darkness, so we can use the dynamic lighting in interesting ways (torches, neon)?" <---- I know we saw pitch black in the little killzone teaser, but that may have been video effects and not the actual game. I also saw a video with a dark area with the neon glowing stars (was a GDC 07 video I think), but it wasn't true darkness.

"Are we going to be able to give detailed text descriptions to our uploaded levels, or is the keywords/tags system the only way to describe our levels from within the game?"

Wasn't the background possible via the eyetoy and stickers?

No gravity then, perhaps you could still "cheat" this in a Ratchet&Clank manner, you know the walking up the wall type thing.

Perhaps there's a maximum amount of triggers you can use. I'm sure they have limited these options to avoid any slowdown issues if things get too complicated.
Is there actually a debug feature to check the level upon completion?

As for the layers, I'm pretty sure I read it were three playable layers in some hands-on/preview somewhere.

Cool though, so there are big bosses (russian collector). Come to think of it, I haven't heard a lot about the single player experience. Very interesting

Here's another question, since LBP includes ps3 trophies, will users be able to award them for their levels too? Perhaps via a certain certification you can apply for or whatever?

Don't think they've said anything about that. Would make sense I guess. Would still like to hear something official from them if we don't have a source.

As for the layers, I'm pretty sure I read it were three playable layers in some hands-on/preview somewhere.

Yeah, i'm not talking about the playable layers though. There appears to be another layer between the 3 playable and the background (like a scenery layer). The most glaring example of this is the boss battle. When the three guys are chillin above the playable zone, they appear to be in a certain layer that is neither playable or background.

Oh, and I don't think they'll let us add trophies or anything like that. Those are going to be a pretty hardcoded feature, considering how they pertain to a "gamerscore" and other games. Our user generated version of "trophies" will be level rewards.

Loosen up a little, man.
There's double posting and there's posting twice.

EDIT:
Harrisment, about backgrounds, you won't be able to upload your own backgrounds as in the settings (english garden etc), as the backgrounds are all 3D. You're able to cover up the existing background with land mass and paint your own 2D-ish background on it.

Would be interesting to know
"Are we able to modify the lightning settings, and if we are, by how much?"

This is something i posted in the replies, but i'll post it here too.

Question:
*Sony are big fans of DRM, but how restricted are the online levels going to be in terms of content?

*Will there be any restrictions on adult content ?(pretty much everyone wants to make a penis level).
Will I be able to make a big moving Kratos robot and have it stay on the servers, by my big moving Sonic robot would be removed?

Basically I want to know what i?m going to be able to upload without it being deleted, what the limits are etc. PLEASSSSSEEEEE.

Do we know if LBP will be region locked? I have a suspicion that we already have the answer to this somewhere, but I hope it isnt! I want to play with my new forum buddies from overseas!

Speak for yourself buddy, lol. Although I have thought of a level focused around breasts. Pretty sure that one is only going to be given to people who I know wont report me

Im 90% certain the levels are region free, but whether or not you can play with other people is a very good question indeed.

Considering the backgrounds are all in 3D, it's clear we're not able to upload our own. You're not able to upload any 3D stuff into the game (custom models). I read that in one of the numerous interviews.

However, I do not have information as to if you're able to override the 3D background and replace it with a 2d skybox of a sort (like in some old school FPS games). I doubt it, but I guess it might be possible. Have a hunch it'd be too technical though, as they seem to limit the user generated content to stickers only (in addition to the stuff you can create with the editor).

EDIT:

I'm fairly confident that it won't be region locked. It wouldn't make sense to make a play/create/share game limit the people you can be in connection with. However, that's a good question to ask imo.

The only game that is region locked, to my knowledge, is MGS4, and thats because they use their won servers. This game will be using Sony's servers so I don't think it will be locked ^^

And Linque's right, no source needed, its just something that's possible.

I have a few, but honestly, choose the best ones you see fit out of all the members. I want this site to be owned by the community more than anything.

1) This one has been asked here, but to take it a bit further.... "What can fans be doing now to create their own stickers? What formats are supported, what resolution, how does transparency work for those wanting to create stickers other than square ones? ***(I want to create a members only area where we can post stickers that we can all use for our levels)

2) Will you be putting in Youtube support for this title?

3) Will you be putting in trophy support for the actual creation of levels, or if one of your levels reaches a certain rating, and so on?

That's it for now. But I'm sure loving some of the questions you guys are coming up with.

I really like the question about ambient light that Harrisment has.

Also try to get a answer to the temperature gauge thing or the 500kb limit, which will they use.

One thing that i have thought of(and maybe someone here can answer for me.) is when i play on a friends PS3 can I use my sackboy that i would use on my PS3 (my account). Or would it be like Warhawk where it is like Overwork1, Overwork2...? Does the "stuff" that i collect on my friends PS3 go to my swag or stay on his system?

3) Will you be putting in trophy support for the actual creation of levels, or if one of your levels reaches a certain rating, and so on?

That was answered. I think it was in one of the 1up e3 podcasts (the first 2 were good, I think they may have been a little drunk in the 3rd). He said they will have trophies for the play, create and share aspects. It doesn't specifically answer your question, but it does answer it in a general way. I doubt they'll want to get into specifics about the trophies just yet.

Can't think of any questions just yet but I'll try to think of a few. I would like to reiterate the ones about sneaking, complete darkness and ambient light, I would love to make a Thief (game series) based level .

EDIT: Oh I've got one!

1) Is there any way to put out fire in the game? Water is the most obvious one but that won't be in the game.

2) Also does fire affect anything else in the game, like if you drove over fire with tyres made of rubber or ice?

3) Seeing as the moon has a limited number of craters... does that mean you have a limited amount of self-created levels saved at any one time? Or will each crater open up another menu of levels made using that crater?

4) If you win an item in a user-made level but don't like it, can you delete it?

5) Is there a section in the menu for saved user-made items?

6) If you edit an item that's in the game such as a vehicle and save it to your "inventory" does it save over the original or it it saved in a separate section of the menu?

That's all for the moment. I'll try to think of more.

i know it's unlikely as nothing has been said but i'd love to make a stormy level around a castle

I don't think weather would fit in well. Everything supposed to be real-world objects made into things or used in ways you wouldn't expect. Putting real weather in doesn't seem to fit. I think you could make dark clouds out of some kind of material (sponge? cloth?) and make cardboard lightning bolts, then hook it up to some kind of pulley system. Sounds like a lot of work, but I'm really not sure weather would fit in. Good question, though, I'd like to hear their response.

well i think it would be okay really. rain could just have everything looking darker with realistic yet cartoony (ya get me?) looking rain that splatters on the ground - but doesn't mean making puddles or anything. Snow would be great but thats where things would get complex as it would look wierd if it didn't settle. and wind.... well imagine the fun you could put in levels with wind!

-I remember reading that the sackboy responds to mics. If I were to talk, my sackboys mouth would go up and down? Is it possible to make cutscenes or so?

- Does the sackboy have a voice option at all? Like if he died would he yell ouch, or just silent but deadly kills.

-Weather? Mybe snow will be available for only december? rain? lightning bolts?thunder?wind? anything?

BTW, be sure to record the interview.

exactly how much is able to be build in a level is it like boom blox where there is a bar for how much can be created or are the opinions almost unlimited and open for creative juice to flow through2008-07-29 18:47:00

Alright, guys, I've updated the questions, rewritten them as needed, and put them in order of asking. I doubt we'll get more than 45 minutes to an hour of interview time, so if you guys keep coming up with great questions I'm gonna be forced to start removing some from the list. Don't let that stop you, though, I want us to ask the best questions we can, and that will take some pruning.

Also, if your question didn't make the list, it's either because a)They've already given an answer or b)It didn't hold priority over some of the other questions. I'll try my best to add everyone's, though.

Finally, the interview will probably take place over AIM, for those of you who didn't know.

there's a restriced amount you can put in one level. a little bar (looking like a thermometer) runs up the left hand side of the screen. this fills up as you put stuff in the level. when it's full, your level is full

One tip, Cartman (I'm assuming you're the one conducting the interview): keep it conversational. Don't just go down the list of questions. Ask questions if something's not clear to you in whoever's response, make sure to segue. Always makes the interview more enjoyable, even if you end up asking fewer questions.2008-07-29 20:09:00

I deleted a few questions from the list and rewrote a couple more, so we have a good chunk of questions to ask. Keep submitting them, guys. I'll keep checking every so often and make changes as needed.

This is a guideline of questions we'd like to ask, but I'm not going to be robotic in it's execution. I'll transition from question to question as needed, and don't worry, I'll try to get through every question.

-Is there any way to put out fire in the game? Water is the most obvious option, but if that doesn't make the cut, is there anything else?

-Does fire affect anything else in the game, like if you drove over fire with tyres made of rubber or ice?

-If you edit an item that's in the game, such as a vehicle, and save it, do you have the option of keeping the old version as well as saving the new version, or would you be forced to overwrite it?

-Speaking of saving vehicles, we have heard of an in-game system that allows you to save an item as a "blueprint" in order to place that item wherever you would like in the future. How does this system work?

-In certain videos and screenshots, there appears to be layers of the level between the playable area and the background, like some sort of skybox for filling in the scene. For example, in the construction yard near the end, the boss and his two minions rest in this area. What are the options for editing this area, if any?

-Does the editor allow for true pitch black darkness, so we can use the dynamic lighting in interesting ways (torches, neon)? If not, how dark does it get, and can we control the degree throughout the level(such as making the sun rise when the player reaches a certain point)?

-Are there any weather effects, such as rain or fog?

-How restricted are the online levels going to be in terms of content? Are IPs not owned by Sony totally off-limits(Halo, Mario, ect), or do could we be vague in the creation of our level to avoid deletion?

-Are we going to be able to give detailed text descriptions to our uploaded levels, or is the keywords/tags system the only way to describe our levels from within the game?

-Are we able to create our own unlockable trophies for custom-made levels? If so, how in-depth is the rules system for these unlocks?

-If you win an item in a user-made level but don't like it, can you delete it?

-Will LittleBigPlanet's online play be region locked, or can we play with our friends overseas?

-How does local play work when migrating to a friend's PS3? Can we bring our sackboy along, and if so, how?

Excellent question list Cartman. We should get a ton of new info if you can squeeze some good answers from them.

Brilliant, Cartman, some nice questions. I would prune a few and add a few though.. Theres one that asks if we can create trophies. I know for a fact that only Devs can make trophies and that they are even restriced to a certain value/amount. Rather, ask on the scoring (I think the give gold, silver and bronze medals at the end of a level, with better rewards for a better medal) confirm this and ask what factors effect it (time/items collected/enemies killed/times 'died&apos

And lastly, I didnt see anything in there about the story or cutscenes. (I may have missed it, i'm on my PS3) but ask about that please? (If we can create cutscenes, I don't see that happening, but if there will be cutscenes throughout the story)

This has already been answered, when they said that you can create the text bubbles that you see in some of the recent videos. If you can create text bubbles, I'm 100% sure you can create the video screens.

Rephrase suggestion:
We know wooden logs can be set on fire. Will you have other element interactions, such as ice melting or fire extinguishing?

I'd still like to ask, as you say that question hasn't been answered but a related one has. It won't be a priority, though; if someone comes up with a better, more interesting question, I'll replace it.

Nice.
I didn't think of unlocking anything along the lines of a download key, you could make an entire episodic game that way. Very Nice

Like Maltay I'm curious about the option of making cutscenes but no biggie.

I'm pretty sure they answered the copyright question at some time, as in don't name it specifically "Mario" or whatever and you might get away with it unless someone objects but indeed it would be nice to know the specifics.

Cartman - I'd take out the one about pitch black darkness. That's a very objective term. At least rephrase it. They've also already touched on the Mario/Sonic/Halo idea. They said to simply be vague, and you'll be alright. I'm also not sure about the questions asking about migrating the sackboy over and deleting a user-made item. Maybe I just don't understand them.2008-07-29 21:38:00

I changed what you suggested, but the migration of the sackboy and the deletion of a user-made item are questions I'd like answered. Anyway, I'll clarify them for you if you don't understand them:

I was asking if we could somehow take our customized sackboy, with our items that we've unlocked, to a friend's house and use him there.

As to the deletion of a user made item, what if you collect a penis while playing a level? If you didn't want it, could you delete it?

Mybe we can hold unlimited amount of penises?Like we get to the point where we collect so much stuff and that we'll have to make sections to order everything out, highly depends on how much space you have.

For example,in MGO you can download your clans emblem and save it to your HDD but it can only be accessed through MGO.It has a number of slots and you can delete them if you want.

Since this is LBP,I think we can hold as many as we want.Play,Create,Share.I'm pretty sure they've thought about how many custom items a player can keep and they hype surronding the game.

Here are some of my questions that I would like included in the interview:

Will there be add-on packs with new materials, tools, or AI "brains" that will be available on the Playstation Store?
Will there be a story mode in the game?
Are you going to release a demo/beta to the public? I know there are beta trials right now but when will the trials be made public?
Who [in the public] will have the first chance to get into the public beta?

I will edit the list if I have any more questions.

Thanks,

I got rid of it. I read the info, made a note in my head to delete that question, then forgot. Thanks for pointing it out.

By the way, for those of you that are interested, I should get a hold of someone at Media Molecule within the next hour or so if you guys don't mind waiting around. They start work around 9 their time, which is about an hour from now.

No, but I'll add one.

EDIT: I was told by someone at Media Molecule that, although he personally(the person who picked up the phone) wasn't interested, he would make sure I am contacted about it. So, while the man I spoke to yesterday assured me I'd be contacted and an interview would be set up, whoever I spoke to today seemed a little more leery about giving me a straight answer. I don't want to say we won't get an interview, because there's a chance, but there's also a chance we might not. I've been getting mixed messages from them, so we'll just have to wait and hope for the best. In the meantime, however, I don't think we should stop writing up questions and refining our possible interview, as if it does happen we'll want to be ready.

Thanks guys for dealing with this, and I'm sorry if it doesn't end up happening.

I still wonder how complicated you can make one single object, if there is or isn't an "enemy ai" you can create.

Anyway, huge levels limited by height + length and the thermometer limiting the complexity, NICE !

True. We'll give it some time, and I'll let you know if they contact me.

Anyway, Maltay, I've seen the music, and it is little blocks of a note or a beat, and when a microchip passes over them, they play the sound. When you pass it over a string of them at the right time, it plays music.

True. We'll give it some time, and I'll let you know if they contact me.

Anyway, Maltay, I've seen the music, and it is little blocks of a note or a beat, and when a microchip passes over them, they play the sound. When you pass it over a string of them at the right time, it plays music.

I know that, but will every note be availiable? And also, I heard a drum tune, anything like a piano or something? would be nice to know

They contacted me! We won't interview them one on one, but he asked me to send the questions and they'll answer them and send us the responses. I'll update the main topic when I do get a response, which won't be until early next week(they are especially busy this week).2008-07-30 19:10:00

woot woot!!

Just thought of another question (unless you've already send it), will it be possible to import a whole group of items from another level into yours?

They've already said you can edit any level they give you out of the box but what if you want to put several large bits from different levels together?

Well, I think he's already sent it, but I can venture a guess. It's known you can save whole items, not just resources. However, you'll have to recreate something like a bridge across fire, something that requires more than one object.

Yeah I figured that would probably be it but one can hope. If you could glue a level (say a begin, middle and end) from three different levels together that could really speed things up.2008-07-31 12:17:00

I strictly mean as shortcut, if you can put several large bits together and then tweak it to make it one whole level. A jumping bit from one level, the boss from another, etc etc and then tweak it, change stuff.2008-07-31 13:31:00

I would of thought it's possible. Though i won't really be doing this much... as it'll be more exciting to see new things in levels. however it would be a good way to learn to use the tools

well

a) with 50 + levels, there are bound to be bits and pieces that come close to a part of a level you want to make

b) supposedly the thermometer is less affected by the stuff that comes on the disc, so the more self-made textures you make via stickers, the less you'll be able to put in a level.

So quickly cut n paste the general lines and tweak it till the thermometer can't take anymore is what I'd plan on doing to start learning the tool. The less the items count towards the size, the more triggers and such I'd could put in.

I'm very interested in knowing exactly how much stuff you can put in a level. I doubt too many people would ever run out of room to put stuff. I don't think Mm would make it difficult to make a huge level.2008-07-31 14:56:00

On bbroman question about custom backgrounds.
I would also like to know how many in game backgrounds we have to choose from? Avaliable from the start or as unlockables by playing the game?

To answer your question, yes I did send them the questions. Although I am still unsure as to whether we will have a live interview or if they will answer them via email. I'll put the email Siobhan(she's the executive producer) sent me here so you guys can discern for yourselves:

Hi Michael,

I heard you called again this morning! We will def arrange an interview with you. Send through some questions and we will look at them early next week, we are super busy this week J

Cheers,

Siobhan

who here had the background and lighting question?

http://blogs.theage.com.au/screenplay/archives/010156.html

Backgrounds for use in your designs include urban areas, deserts, temples, and the now-familiar garden. They are not simply flat images or photos - you can change the lighting and colour correction and add elements like fog to dramatically change their appearance and the subsequent atmosphere.

I can't imagine how they'd answer this one. It's likely that different things take up different amounts of space. So they could say "2,476,000 oranges", or "3421 blocks of wood 1 sackboy high with a full-resolution custom image on it", or "984 windmills"; and it wouldn't be that much use to us.
The best answer I can think of has been given; watch the G4 E3 2008 interview, look at how big that level is (especially when they zoom out to skip to a later section), and figure that you can do something equally large and complex.

I am kinda curious, if say you have infite space for levels not uploaded. (in your harddrive) Would it possible to easily switch levels from being uploaded, into storage, or from storage to upload.

If its too late to find out thats ok.

I was just contacted by Siobhan Reddy again, and she said they'll answer the questions for us and send the answers to me by the end of the week. She also said they probably won't answer all of them, but they'll do the best they can.

I agree. If we were bigger, we'd definitely get some more revealing info, but it seems to me that we'll mostly get answers similar to what other interviewers have received when they ask these questions.

Yep! Theres been a few guesses, one is that they will give us alot of video captureing/editing tools for making mini-movies and uploading them to youtube (and the possibility of custom cut-scenes)

and extensive music-making tools (like mario paint) is another guess.

No, I believe they nixed the screenshot capture in lieu of other features for now. Not to say they won't bring in a "Machinima Pack" via DLC that will contain that feature, but it isn't in the full game. I may wrong, though.

Quick question!

The interview's soon, I know but...when exactly is it?! Not that I don't constantly hit F5 already, but...you know. ;]

Oh, and additionally, here's another question...

How will the music/sound editor be handled right now besides working with switches/triggers? Or will it be held off until later on in an Add-On of some sort?

Also, will you be able to add a level description before entering said level? So players have a general idea what's it about, I mean.

I can't say with any certainty when the interview will be posted, but I can promise it will be before this Saturday.

You answered your first question on your own: triggers. You can place a chip and attach a sound to it, and anytime another chip or your sackboy comes within a set distance from it, the sound will play. Your second question is already in the list of questions, so don't worry about that.

Well, a couple of things. First of all, Siobhan(the woman I've been corresponding with through this whole deal) hasn't responded to the two emails I've sent; one was sent earlier in the week and didn't have anything to do with the interview, and the second was sent today, about 6:15 AM my time, which is about 2:00 PM there. I haven't heard anything in regards to the interview, guys, so I don't know what to say. I am going to try calling them(hopefully they are still in) and find out what happened.

EDIT: I called and she should be calling me back within the next while. I'll let you guys know.

EDIT 2: Here is her response(she emailed me):

Hiya,
Just got your message ? steady on! We will get some answers over to you J
Cheers,
SiobhanSo, we just have to wait. I refuse to give you guys a time frame, because I don't want it to be another letdown. Just wait, and we'll get it.

Is that a term used in the UK to calm someone down? I didn't know that. No, I didn't scream at her, but I might have come off as impatient. I apologized, though, and she seems like a nice enough person.

Oh wow.. thats strictly UK dialect? Cool! You should know nobody here except Alex evans actualy says the word 'awesome' outloud.. atleast until recently..

I also have no idea what ryan means when he says tidy butt...

Lol, tidy's a welsh saying.. Another way of saying nice or good.. And if you purposely splet "butt" that way, that's also welsh, another way of saying "Mate" or something ;/

Well it's nice of them to actually let us know. I wouldn't mind if it was another week late, as long as they told us..Leaving someone in the dark isn't nice tbh.. But anyhow, it was nice of them to tell us, and it's good to see they're busy working!

I didn't think they'd work on a Sunday tbh, but maybe she'll do it at home or something? Who knows

Hey guyz

I worked whole day and after drinking something with friends I finally got some time to look on LBPC. It think that it is very polite to just say that it won't be forgotten and that they're still working on it. I like there customer-service very much for as far as I've seen. The are just so polite and correct to their customers, that's just great. I'm looking forward to the answers!

i'm too lazy to look through all 11 pages... did you get your interview yet? if not, when is it schedualed for? and also, are you still taking questions to ask?

p.s is it going to be a phone interview, or a message interview?

if it's an instant message, we should orginize some kind of group interview, where we could all politely one buy one ask questions, or to keep everything safe, we should all be muted, and only cartman would recieve our questions, and he can sned them to the interviewee upon approval!

cuz i could probably come up with 8 trillion questions!

maybe even setup a vent chat!!

Heres a good question from around the web.

Will the bonuses from preordering be available after launch?
Example: Kratos-sack and that other one.

I heard the kratos-sack will be at gamestop and i was planning on ordering it from best buy.

No, it is via email. We as a forum already decided on the questions we are asking(check the first post), and Siobhan Reddy(a producer) among others will answer them and send them back to me. At that point I will make a new thread in the "News" section and post it on the front page of the site.

sounds sweet! p.s gamestop does have the worst pre-order reputation ever, i even forgot to get one of my pre-orders becuase they forgot to call me and tell me the game arrived...

so yea, that gives perfect oppertunity to ***** about there terrible service, and continue *****ining until you get some "incentive" to stop

incentive being a free something ( gift card, game, w/e )

you could even back yourself up by making sure the manager of the store personally tells you your pre order will be fine, then it's on him if anything goes wrong.

also, i never pre ordered anything, from anywhere else, only games at gamestop.. i can't complain so far.. if it's a really good game, i doubt you'll need a reminder to pick the game up, and if you keep all your receipts, they can't screw you over.

EXTRA SUPER IMPORTANT P.S:

I would like to ask you if you can alter the beta question to be slightly more in depth. From the mouth of alex evans mouth, i heard him saying that the press will get a beta, and a small amount of non press ps3 owners will get in. i would like you to get more in depth on how we could do simple things to lragen our possibility of being picvked. things like signing up for certain sites, or registering your ps3.. if the infromation gets given, then this site will become very popular, and if he can't say, then he'll say, i can't say, but i really think it's worth adding to your questions, or atleast expand on the beta question as it is. ( please ) )

Sorry man, the questions were decided and sent a while back. Also, things have changed since the questions were sent, and we have better ideas of some things.

I'm not so sure tbh.. Maybe 21st for the US, but nothing is mentioned about the UK yet.. We don't have any stores that they've named yet, or any info..

The 3rd or the 4th would be IDEAL for me, but I doubt it./.

I emailed MM about this but I imagine they've been getting tons and tons of emails... sooo maybe you can ask for me

Is it possible to have a player pull a lever to lock a block the player has placed in one of several spots in the non-edit regular game mode?

The other question I sent them..

[I]Is it possible to carve shallow grooves and designs into the front of a wooden block to create sculptures, hieroglyphs, and other 3d looking objects.

Check out these clouds and moon for an idea of what I mean.. maybe I worded the question funky.

Yeah you can do they second one. You could re-create that moon, they did everything with the in-game tools!

One thing i'm interested in is that Elephant head! Its a work of art!

No, it hasn't. They are just slow to respond. I've got new mail in my inbox(gmail) but for some reason gmail will not open up for me, so I cannot check it at the moment. I'll let you all know as soon as I know.

Maybe it's so much info from Media Molecule that it locked it up Answers to all of your questions and free DLC for everyone on the board for LBP.
