Who likes this game? It's really good, though some Planeswalkers are cheap.
I'm saving up to buy an Eldrazi pack, the colorless non-artifact creatures? Those are good, right?

This game is great, I don't know whether buying an eldrazi pack is that necessary though, M11 come out this Friday. I play MTG tournements most weeks and I'll tell you something, nothing beats a good elf deck.

I know someone who makes his own decks with fake cards he created himself, and even though they are supposed to be indestructible they cannot beat my elf deck.
Unfortunately the other week in a tournament I had 3 million elves out and still lost

Now I have more to look forward on Friday!
Elf Decks are some of the best, but I usually drive my black green deck with a few Elves and a Nath.
Do you have Primalcrux? Those are the kings of green decks.

I like MtG, it's the first card game I really got into. The new card look really looks ugly to me though, so I stopped buying boosters when they introduced those sets (I think it was around 8th edition). I only have some cards from the later sets of that period, but a friend of mine has some really old cards, like 4th or 3rd edition or something.

I still have this really epic Black-Red-White deck with Vampiric Dragons, Sengir Vampires, and a slew of stat boosting enchants.

I remember losing my best card in the washing machine, my uncle gave it to me with my first deck set (set 7 I think?)
The card was...

A Platinum Angel.

In an elf deck he is kinda un important, if you are going into extended cards, the best thing to do it
elvish archdruid
umbral mantle
Use these to get infinite manna
move umbral mantle to imperious perfect
you can then go infinite elves
use coat of arms
and overun
nearly guaranteed the victory with a lot of overkill.
edit: platinum angel destroys this tactic

and Mox Lotus (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=74323)

I stopped somewhere around the 6th packtingy.
I had the most awesome sliverqueen deck,
in about 5-6 turns i had an infinite amounth of slivers with infinite attack/defend power, could not be the target of spells or instants and prolly all abilities ever.

Whaa?

Sorry, but I've never played it. Something tells me if I'd got into it, I would have liked it, but I already have a box full of Pok?mon and YuGiOh cards, so nah.

EDIT: After Googling Platinum Angel, ummm WTF!?

You can't lose the game and your opponent can't win the game

Surely that's beyond broken?

Its not broken at all, there is also a demon that has you can't win the game, you opponent cant lose, but when you look at these cards and look at other cards you will understand how the most powerful cards can both help and hinder your ability to win.

Hah, it's really not broken at all.

I can think of many cards off the top of my head that will defeat it, surely just anything that says either:

'Destroy target creature'
'Destroy target artefact'
'Deal X damage to target creature or player'
'Remove target permanent from the game'

or just bring it into play under your control with a blue mind control card, counter them even casting the spell with a counter spell, blue has many,or even something obtuse like pariah (http://sales.starcitygames.com/cardscans/MAG10TH/pariah.jpg).

MTG isn't just tough cards though, it's also stratagy.
The good cards can be bad without something to reinforce them.
Imagine Platinum Angel but almost invincible.

Well, each deck has one rulebook and a playmat.
Five colors:
White: healing
Blue: strategy and spells
Green: power up
Black: darkness, life drain
Red: straight out attack

I loved me some Ravnica. In fact, I still run a Ravnica deck, mainly Selesyna Conclave.

So many saprolings?so much convoking?so many CHEAP destructive spells?-shudders with pleasure-

Saprolings are some of the best.
My current deck, green and black, is simple:
DRAIN (Nath of Gilt Leaf and Megrim anyone?)
MULTIPLY
OVERRUN
BLANCHWOOD ARMOR WITH AVATAR OF MIGHT
PRIMALCRUX
Buff up the rest.

The playmat is almost useless though, if yo play the game properly chances are you will fill up most of the table.

How is that broken? You win all the time.

Wasn't there a Yu-Gi-Oh card(s) that let's you win automatically?

They have playmats now? Lol.
It seems there have been a lot of rules changes since I last played.

After doing some solitaire testing, it seems my deck handles better than I remembered. Yes, there's a bunch of random cards in there. I don't have a huge collection and I didn't really seek out and buy that many singles on ebay. I prefer casual play to tournament play.

Yeah but they were difficult to get and then difficult to use.

Yeah but they were difficult to get and then difficult to use.

Still, the game let you keep 2-3 of the same card in your deck. So technically, your odds of winning would increase.

Besides, the Platinum Angel card can be destroyed, while in Yu-Gi-Oh, people can cheat and protect certain cards with spells, traps, abilties, etc..

Side-Note: I believe that card(s) (Exodiac I think) is now banned from tournaments. So it's not an official win, and it's hardly ever used in play. Just a fun fact.

exodia was always banned from tournaments, it was too overpowered, but you needed all five pieces, with the ability to have 3 of each. But you wouldn't put 3 in because it lowers your chance of getting the ones you don't already have in your hand.2010-07-16 12:47:00

But still, not only will it save your cards from being destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, it'll boost your chances of picking up Exodia cards instead of other monster cards.

And why did this thread suddenly change into the "Yu-Gi-Oh" thread?

By the way, do you guys know about the program called Apprentice? It's a freeware program that existed since the dark ages and allows you to connect to another player through TCP/IP to play MtG.

It doesn't actually enforce any rules or have any kind of special effects or imagery. It's pretty much just a glorified chat program with a simple area to place cards on and edit decks, but it does the job pretty well IMHO. It seems to have only been updated up to 10th edition though.

Well, each deck has one rulebook and a playmat.

Five colors:

White: Healing, Defense, Control, Units that get tougher when you have more of the same, Soldiers and Angels

Blue: Control, Enchantments, Aura's, Counterspell, Flying creatures, Spirits and Birds

Green: Big Creatures, Healing, Buff spells, Swarm tactics, Regeneration, Elves and Snakes

Red: Cheap fast creatures, Direct Damage, Land destruction, Goblins and Skeletons

Black: This is a strange one, it lets you do bits and pieces of the others but usually at a cost, your own life, Vampires and Zombies

Allow me to amend slightly ^^.

Also, if you look on the back of the cards you have the elemental colour wheel http://wpcontent.answers.com/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/aa/Magic_the_gathering-card_back.jpg/200px-Magic_the_gathering-card_back.jpg

Generally speaking, the colours that are next to each other have some complimenting tactics and strategies, and opposite colours can conflict.

For instance, Red works well with Green and Black but can struggle when paired with White or Blue. And so on so forth, but these are just guides, I've owned a fair few mean Green and Black regen decks. Also some mean Blue/Green creature control decks.

Rather than buy loads of cards again and then only play with my bro, we use Apprentice. It's a bit of a hassle to set up but it has nearly all the expansion packs.

... though half the satisfaction is having the cards there in front of you... it's a tough call.
