Heres a freeware turn based physics fighting game, Toribash (http://www.toribash.com/).

It works on PC or mac and it's really satisfying when you get good at it. I'm willing to beat any of you guys down if you want to get in some practise
Hell, we could even hold a tournament

And carrying on the theme of gorey videogames, happy wheels, sorta' like trials biking but with segways and fat guys in mobility scooters. I'll just leave this here - http://www.totaljerkface.com/happy_wheels.php

Perhaps one for the time waster category?

Danball/Powder Game/Dust - http://dan-ball.jp/en/javagame/dust/
A great time-waster for your lunch break - basically a much bigger and better version of pyrosand. You can upload levels that you create and play levels that other people have created. A bit like Java LBP.

I wouldn't really call most of these freeware... I would call them free, however.

Hmmmm, web browsers...

lynx
links
links+
elinks
w3m
uzbl
xxxterm
dillo
konq-e
konqueror
epiphany

My quest for web browsers that don't suck has been long and arduous... I haven't really succeeded yet. Uzbl looks promising, but it hates compiling for me.

Hmmm, programming...

emacs
vi
vim
nano
mg

gcc
g++

codeblocks (never used it, but I have heard good things)

Why is programming mixed with office stuff? Buh, duh, wuh?

Instant messaging fluff...

irssi
weechat
chatzilla
xchat 2
pidgin
bitlbee

games:

openarena
tremulous

video / audio:

mplayer
ffmpeg
mencoder
audacity

I don't really know what I'm doing anymore, it's 3:30am.

Just in case some of you guys didn't already know, there are CDs that are basically a compilation of free software utilities for the PC. You can get them on ebay for like $10 or less and they include just about all the PC utilities listed in the OP. The really nice feature with them is something called PE - Preinstalled Enviroment. This is a lifesaver in computer repair. It allows you to load a basic OS in RAM and take advantage of the utilities to clean the system. I use this to fix computers more than anything.

If anyone is interested, you can look for Hirens Boot CD, which is one of my fav.

Try this one.

GDI++

It's for Windows and it renders fonts and words on screen to make them smoother and cleaner like a Mac's. It's really cool, especially if you like how Mac's fonts look.

To install it:

1. Download GDI++.
2. Extract this ZIP file in any directory, for example:
C:gdi
3. Double-click the file:
gditray.exe
4. Now, in your task bar you can see a “G”.
5. Double-click it, it should start glowing green meaning it's activated. You might need to right click it and press "Enable".
6. Enjoy this beautiful font-smoothing.

Here's (http://vladg.com/2009/03/make-windows-fonts-look-as-smooth-as-mac-os-x-fonts/) a website about it. Click a GDI++ link to download it. I've downloaded it and it's all fine.

Your current list of operating systems is rather pitiful... I mean really, we can do a lot better than just ubuntu.

Here we go...

OpenBSD - http://www.openbsd.org/index.html
"The OpenBSD project produces a FREE, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system. Our efforts emphasize portability, standardization, correctness, proactive security (http://www.openbsd.org/security.html) and integrated cryptography (http://www.openbsd.org/crypto.html)."

FreeBSD - http://www.freebsd.org/
"FreeBSD? is an advanced operating system for modern server, desktop, and embedded computer platforms (http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/). FreeBSD's code base has undergone over thirty years of continuous development, improvement, and optimization. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributors/staff-committers.html). FreeBSD provides advanced networking, impressive security features, and world class performance and is used by some of the world's busiest web sites (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/nutshell.html#INTRODUCTION-NUTSHELL-USERS) and most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices."

NetBSD - http://www.netbsd.org/
" NetBSD is a free, fast, secure, and highly portable Unix-like Open Source operating system. It is available for a wide range of platforms, from large-scale servers and powerful desktop systems to handheld and embedded devices. Its clean design and advanced features make it excellent for use in both production and research environments, and the source code is freely available under a business-friendly license. NetBSD is developed and supported by a large and vivid international community. Many applications are readily available through pkgsrc, the NetBSD Packages Collection."

DragonFly BSD - http://www.dragonflybsd.org/
"DragonFly belongs to the same class of operating system as BSD and Linux and is based on the same UNIX ideals and APIs. DragonFly gives the BSD base an opportunity to grow in an entirely different direction from the one taken in the FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD series."

Open Solaris - http://www.opensolaris.com/
"The OpenSolaris Operating System offers unique features designed to help you build and deploy high-performance application services, starting with the Image Packaging System (IPS), continuing to the latest enhancements to the award-winning ZFS and featuring integrated virtualizaton options that span OS, network and storage -- and that's just the beginning. OpenSolaris gives you next generation Solaris technologies coupled with the best in open source software and a vibrant development community. Download OpenSolaris 2009.06 (http://www.opensolaris.com/get/) now!"

Haiku-OS - http://www.haiku-os.org/
"Haiku is a new open-source operating system that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the BeOS, Haiku is fast, simple to use, easy to learn and yet very powerful."

FreeDos - http://www.freedos.org/
"FreeDOS is a free DOS-compatible operating system for IBM-PC compatible systems. FreeDOS is made of up many different, separate programs that act as "packages" to the overall FreeDOS Project."

MenuetOS - http://www.menuetos.net/index.htm
"MenuetOS is an Operating System in development for the PC written entirely in 32/64 bit assembly language. Menuet64 is released under License (http://www.menuetos.net/m64l.txt) and Menuet32 under GPL (http://www.menuetos.org/license.htm). Menuet supports 32/64 bit x86 assembly programming for smaller, faster and less resource hungry applications."

Bluh, I'm woozy from school and kind of sick of this already. I might make another post about this, but I doubt many of you care. These are just a few of the ones I remember off of the top of my head. There are tonnes of free to use operating systems. Literally hundreds, even thousands of them. I haven't even gotten into all of the Linux variants yet.

woah, sorry for the long wait.

and the basic idea behind the OS list was to give the "best" of that kind, not to place every single free OS.

and sorry if I look like a **** now, but if you're sick of it you can stop contributing, not forcing you to give us the whole list

www.xfire.com (http://www.xfire.com) xfire, chatting, screenshots, videos, and more.
Ok. I use something for chatting in games, like halo, spore and such, it also allows you to surf the web while playing a game, and take screenshots, and videos, and listen to music, while in game ( to use the music, you have to have a music player program running behind the game. ) so, it is kind of a chatting, in-game, thing. but it deserves to be here, cause it has free voice servers, it can also track how you do on games like halo while online. it is called Xfire, it is pretty awesome, and before you shun it, look at how many games it supports, cause there are ALOT.( we could use this to talk to each other without even getting on the site!, and use our VOICES! )

www.trackmania.com (http://www.trackmania.com) Trackmania Nations
If you like racing games, and free stuff, nations is for you. If you want to pay fourty bucks to do some awesome stuff in a racing game that I will explain in a second, this game is ALSO for you.
Trackmania Nations is the free version. Get it at Trackmania.com, basically, the whole racing part is time trials. The online servers have NO limit to the number of people that can be on the server, ( the set a record of over 250 people on the SAME server at one time. Plus, You can paint your car, INSTALL NEW CARS ( you have to make them or download them online. ), and use a custom horn on your car ( beep beep ) MAKE YOUR OWN TRACKS ( there are ad signs you can use, which they also use to advertise, things like the windows phone. The most unique way i have seen a game make money, by implementing ads on tracks made by users. ) you can add your own signs to the collection ( different signs, some have ads, others are signs that can be customized by the user, you have to install a .dds texture with the sign to be able to use it. then you can select it, or use one of the ones already on the game. ) And, you can edit replays. but, without united, noone else can see your custom car or paintjob. and you cant upload anything. oh, and i forgot to mention when i first posted this, Trackmania now has it's own Wii game. Yeah, thats right AN ONLINE PC GAME BECAME A WII GAME>

8bit killer (http://db.tigsource.com/games/8bit-killer) - Sounds gruesome but it's not. Just a 3D world with an 8bit feel.

Tag: The Power of Paint (http://download.cnet.com/Tag-The-Power-of-Paint/3000-7433_4-10907637.html) - I love this game. That is all.

Gravity Bone (http://www.blendogames.com/) - This is an odd one. Short but so awesome. It's like James Bond but with a cube head. (Scroll down a bit on the linked website to get the download).

Super Mario Bros. X (http://www.supermariobrothers.org/smbx/) - Free Mario. Need I say more?

Here's one game

The Powder Toy (http://powdertoy.co.uk/)- This is a downloadable game where you can make just about anything! (Sounds like a certain PS3 game) Sign up is not required, but I recommend it so you can publish your creations and save them.

Hey guys! I have nothing to really add here but after searching, I couldn't find the thing I wanted. Maybe it's because I suck at looking.

Anyways, if there are any free animation programs (Like a free type of Adobe Flash) please tell me!

Comodo - http://www.comodo.com/products/free-products.php

Plenty of excellent free software for protecting your PC. Everything from a firewall to their own secure web browser. Yes there are programs you pay for that Comodo makes available, but for your home computer their freeware is among the best in my experience.

I personally use Windows Security Essentials, Comodo Firewall, and the NoScript add-on for Firefox as the frontline of security on my laptop and I've never been infected.

updated! sorry for not being here for quite a while.

I probably forgot some names in the contribution list so if you made a post with a suggestion and you're not on the list, paste the link to that post on my profile.

And I've been thinking of adding a new section: Firefox Addons
I'll list the vital addons here, not all of course.
okay?

It's basically a free online version of Photoshop. The learning curve for me was less than 30 minutes and it was very easy to use with a lot of tools. I use this to make my sigs and avatars now.

I have a suggestion for pc improvements, tuneup utilities. When you download it, it gives you a 30 day trial, it's similair to ccCleaner as it checks your registry for problems, but it does much more. It clears up your disc space, lets you defragment from easier options, cleans up your shortcuts, adds the image shortcuts back if they become corrupt, lets you choose which programs start at start up, frees up ram in the background (although i think this was for windows xp/vista), the new version allows you to "turn off" programs, meaning they appear unstalled and frees up your memory, but when you want to use them again, they are still fully functional on your computer, theirs a turbo button that makes your pc run faster.

Basically it has a lot of features, and will definitely make your computer run faster, Ive had it since tuneup utilites 2007 when I had an xp based computer with only 1gb of ram, it definitely made a difference and still does today with my windows 7, 64bit, 4gb ram system.

more information here:

Genetos
(the shoot 'em up not the fresh maker)
http://genetos.en.softonic.com/

I recorded a video of it, my freeware capture program kinda stinks.
It made the game look choppy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GvNW2SxZMc&feature=channel_video_title
I'm playing on the basic difficulty and have the levels completely memorized.

The game has a really cool gimmick where your ship and the levels gradually look and act like ones from newer games.
The two levels in my video are like 80s shooters but the game starts to look like a Touhou game or Treasure game later.

Oh and if you never played it you have to play Barkley, Shut Up & Jam: Gaiden.
Its a fun RPG and brilliant spoof.
Its ideal for people who played NBA Jam and watched Space Jam.
Along with other funny cultural references.

What about this game (http://www.theimpossiblegame.org/)? It's called the Impossible Game. Very fun, very addicting, very... Um... Rage quitty... >.> Basically, you're a box, and you have to jump over triangles (spikes) and you can jump on other boxes. It's actually more fun than it sounds... xD Just click that little button up there... Yes, that pink one that has the link...

NOTE- The game is not actually 'Freeware' so I probably shouldn't be posting it here... BUT there is a freeware version of it for the TI-84 Calculator that can be found in the Mirage OS (http://www.ticalc.org/pub/83plus/asm/games/mirageos/) section on the TI site (http://www.ticalc.org/pub/83plus/basic/games/).

A simple media player with its design focused on ease of use that supports pretty much any video or audio file, no matter how obscure.

Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/):
Don't know how this isn't here already. Valve's online game platform that supports over a thousand games and community features.

IZarc (http://www.izarc.org/):

Oh btw the spoiler tags on the 'other' section aren't working, you should fix the OP.

Pretty sure most people have heard of this one, its basically a fighting game engine, just work the sprites and place the chars, it requires some degree of knowledge and there are other programs you can use to create your characters, sounds and scenarios, it has been remade several times, with the HD extension being the newest.
