A great piece of software for spyware.

Archive: 19 posts

I wouldn't usually make a thread like this because it sounds like advertisement for them, however I make this thread in the hopes that you might see it and it might be helpful for you.
This morning my laptop got a virus that was putting an add bar at the top of 50% of web pages, and it was doing this on all my browsers.
http://i587.photobucket.com/albums/ss314/robotiod/add.png

I ran a virus check with norton internet security, I can't complain because it found a virus I had't noticed, but it didn't solve the above problem.
I couldn't even use google well enough due to my keywords, (Virus, browser, google, etc) being too vague and leading to millions of web pages. I eventually got to the keywords of something like google advert virus, or something like that and I got my answer.

I got lead to a website were someone was having a similar problem to me, and it led me to this page. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

This site gives away free software called spybot- search and destroy (other than sounding like the cmon FPS game mode)
It had some good credentials with it.
I'm not telling everyone to download it, but they run this software, with regular updates for free (with the option to donate if you want)

I just made this thread to say tanks to them and tell you lot about it, It solved my problem so I am happy, hopefully if any of you are having a similar a similar problem you wont have as much trouble finding a solution like I did.
I understand that advertising other site is strictly prohibited on this site, so I hope i'm not breaking any rules.

So yeah, thanks for reading

Before anyone yells out "SPAM!" let me curtail the issue. Robotiod is a respected member, having been around for a while. If he were posting about any software that wasn't free (or if it were something he were affiliated with), we'd have reservations leaving it. As it stands, this is okay for now.

Well since we're on the topic of free ways to help get rid of viruses,

I've, on a number of occasions, used a piece of software called Dr.Delete.
Now I'd advise being careful if you want to get this since I personally didn't download it, my brother did. The way my brother explainded how it worked to me was that some viruses act as if they are opened and you can't delete a file you have open. So you copy the file's address into Dr.Delete and as the computer is turning off the virus closes down so it can then be deleted.

Now my explaination might be wrong but I can say that it does work. And remember what I said about being careful.

mix spybot S&D with ccleaner and malwarebytes anti-malware and your PC is an inpenetrable fortress.
IF a virus gets it they'll make work of it in no-time.

malwarebytes anti-malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I have never bothered with antivirus too much because viruses are usually reasonably easy to find manually, and the ones that aren't don't really show themselves too much, so I would jut scan once in a while.

But after today, actually getting an advert one, I thought protection would be good. It was rather funny actually, that picture on the first post doesn't tell you how I found it, I just had a white bx at the top with a cross on it, It was annoying me. So I disabled my chrome extensions (ad block being one of these) and then I could see the adverts.
So funnily enough the virus wasn't even doing its job properly

Yeah some viruses do a lousy job of hiding themselves well. It's usually the damage they cause thats the hard part to recover from. Some of the nasty infections do some really weird things to the computers. The latest virus infection I had on my desktop left the cursor transparent and color inverted. I have no idea how.2010-07-13 17:41:00

Viruses/spyware shouldn't be taken lightly. They can be used to gather sensitive information from your computer without your knowledge and will also use your computer to spread themselves to other computers or to download other viruses/spyware.

The best practice is to have an active, up-to-date antivirus (one that is not Norton/Symantec garbage), a firewall, and spybot (or similar software). I've had to deal with a lot of viruses over the years, so I've gotten to be kind of an expert at finding and disabling them manually, but it's still better not to let them run amok in the first place.

I would also suggest browser extensions that block scripts on unknown websites. I use the NoScript extension for Firefox so that websites can't run weird scripts unless I authorize them to. It's kind of annoying at first because everything is blocked by default (and this often breaks web pages), but once you've authorized the websites you visit all the time you barely notice it anymore.

I used this program when I got my first ever windows laptop (was a mac user) and got a trojan on the first day, it picked a virus but not the main one unfortunately, I had to resort to staring at task manager till the process came up that caused my laptop to freeze, took aaaaaaaaaaaaaages.

However I still use this program in conjunction with AVG (I heard Noorton slows don't the speed).

I like Lavasoft's Adaware. I use the pro version, but there is a free version. I use that along with CA Security Suite (computer associates), but now that Lavasoft has come out with their own full suite, I may just use that and not use CA any longer.2010-07-13 19:05:00

Be careful tho (and this goes to every one) there are planty of viruses hat are disguised as anty-virus stuff, so don't download just nything you see.
Some actually even do find and get rid of other viruses just so you don't use something else to scan and find that one.

So yeah, just be careful you're not dowloading one of these anti-virus viruses in all this anti-virus extravagganza going on.

Remember, remember, just because it says "anti-virus" doesn't make it safe.
