Tricorn Bear Series! Beta Testers will be Needed!

Archive: 102 posts

I'm turning my one weird level into a series. Tricorn bear is gonna be a "detective" of sorts. Not really though. Just a cool guy that lets you do all the work and makes you feel good about it. Like Tom Sawyer. ANYWAYS. It's gonna be levels based around animal themes! It'll go like this:

Level Ideas So Far:
1. Tricorn Bear and the Case of the Mysterious Berry Plant! (unicorn bears)
2. Tricorn Bear and the Case of the Bad Banana! (monkeys)
3. Tricorn Bear and the Case of the Underdog Detective! (Dogs)
4. Tricorn Bear and the Case of the Sneezy Octopus! (Underwater) [Might change the name to Ornery Octopus]
5. Tricorn Bear and the Case of the Frozen Hypnotist! (Penguins)

so...

What I need your help for:
1. Developing the story further and giving feedback on character design.
2. Gameplay ideas and help. This area is not my strong suit.
3. Beta-testing.
4. Logic help when needed.
5. General ideas and critiques.

So if you guys have absolutely anything to say at all, let me know! I appreciate it all. I'll be putting up some pictures of some character sketches I have soon. You guys just help me out, please!

Wow. This looks amazing. By looking at the pictures, I see that you are amazing with character design and it sounds really fun. I'd be happy to beta test these levels, give feedback on levels, character design and come up with some gameplay and part of the story.2010-07-17 03:05:00

Awesome! Glad to see you guys on board!

Okay, first thing I need some help with is the STORY for the Bad Banana level.

What I have so far is that Tricorn Bear has been hired to help out the Monkey King in some way or another. There will be monkeys that throw spoiled chocolate pudding at you (yes, really), ENEMY CRABS, and bouncy frog platforms. But first, what is the monkey king's problem? Try and involve bananas in there somewhere if you can. Should I have banana people, also? I'm conflicted.

Man those are awesome pic's. I would love to help give feedback and test. My PSN name is gmerritt. Add me.

As for the level's story- The Monkey King has the job of protecting the Bad Banana. The banana turns you insane if you are near it but it also cant be destroyed. The Monkey King is chosen because he is the only one who can resist the power of the Bad Banana and make sure it is kept away in his castle where no one can get affected by it, but one day it is stolen by a monkey who is just really hungry! So he runs through the forest to get to his tree causing everyone he passes to go insane along the way! So what you have to do is get back the banana from the monkey by traveling through the forest and fighting the creatures that have gone bad! Maybe fighting the hungry monkey at the end? -Well that's my idea. Hope you liked it!

I think austimerr's idea is awesome. Maybe when you get the bananna though, you throw it in the pit of chocolate pudding. Any thingt in there would die of the stench in seconds. Plus, it's not like it has any magical powers. Or does it? Maybe you find that out at the end after throwing it in the pit and monkey king gets mad at you and you say well at least i stopped that monkey or something like that.2010-07-17 14:22:00

great idea! but I'll give another so there is a choice.

The bad banana is the giant ruler of teh monkeys. He enslaves them to grow more banana footsoldiers for him (and make pudding). The monkey king was forced to flee his kingdom so he wasn't enslaved too. So you have to go through the sea to the next island (crabs) and through a swamp (frogs) and then through a banana themed castle with banana enemies and finally battle against the bad banana, who has a chocolate pudding gun which he has to constantly refill from a pot. eventually you push him into the pot and he is vanquished.

so, that's my idea.

I like it! Especially the different areas! Maybe once you throw the banana into the pudding in autisimerr and dragonvarsity's story, it mutates and you have to fight it like you said with the pudding gun and the pot? Why am I asking, it's my level. Thanks for the ideas, I'm using them!2010-07-18 05:38:00

Tea eye double guh err! That spells beta tester! Speaking of which, I hope you'd be able to answer a question for me.

While I have nothing to test right now, after some planning, I will have some material soon. Now, my question is, how do I get you to my level? Do I publish it locked and give a key to you guys? Or do I invite you to my moon somehow? If there are multiple options, I would prefer the one where I don't have to publish.

rtm223 has a great way to lock the key in a lockbox. Look for the thread, go get it and publish a lockbox level, then post your code here for the testers. However, you have to publish it and then place the key in your lockbox, then republish it as locked.2010-07-18 09:33:00

I hear beta testers will be needed. Sure, whenever it's ready I'll be happy to test. I'll try keeping up with this. I'm not one to subscribe though since it's easier to see the projects in the ideas and projects section. Anyway, good luck with the series.2010-07-25 23:35:00

loving the look of this man. il be more then happy test it.

just a suggestion, maybe having small golden banana's hidden through the level, or the letters to spell 'banana', and players will get a reward at the end of the level.

I completely agree with tom. Collecting letters of the word banana reminds me of collecting all the letters of the word bonus in this game called Frost bite by nitrome. So yeah, secrets would be cool.2010-07-27 00:47:00

Hey everyone! I need some gameplay ideas. So I'm gonna be letting everyone play the first 60 seconds or so, so you can get a feel for the level. Add me and I'll send you a key. Once you play, please respond with some ideas!

Just so you know, I'm looking for ideas like: "You should swing on vines" or "You should have to solve a puzzle where you use crabs as keys" or something like that.

Okay, made a lockbox! PM me for the code.

EDIT: Also, I updated the beta! Two little gameplay segments. If you're a tester, try it out! Let me know if anything is broken or waaaay too difficult.

P.S. A note on the bounce pads: It's hard to get physics to be consistent, but keep trying and you won't keep dying!

Brilliant gameplay, if I may say I like the whole wheel segment where it slowly goes back underwater
Just a suggestion for gameplay, you could have a simple simple puzzle where sackboy has to get these bananas from a tree and feed it to a giant monkey head. Just an idea

Looks great. Haven't played anything yet, so I'm not sure what you've used in it yet. But, I do have a different story idea, if it's not too late:

Maybe the Bad Banana is actually just a banana that went bad, but got mixed in with the good bananas, and was fed to the king. Now he is gravely ill, and you need to travel great distances to find the Heal King (btw if you don't use that as a character, I totally will) to find some medicine for the king. And then (to incorporate some other people's ideas) maybe when you give the king the medicine he throws up the bad banana, it it mutates into a giant banana monster, and that's like a boss fight.

Just spit-ballin...

I like it, Nana, but unfortunately, it is a little too late right now. I've built a lot, including some story elements. But hey, there are still three other levels in this series that I haven't even thought about yet! Maybe I'll change up the basic idea a bit and throw it into my Frozen Hypnotist level. Thanks!
Speaking of which...
I'd like to get some BRAINSTORMING done for the FROZEN HYPNOTIST level! If you guy's have ideas, let me know!

Alright, let's see...

Got it! Maybe the frozen hypnotist is actually the bad guy, enslaving other penguins (it's penguins, right?) to do his bidding. Perhaps you need to fight your way through mind controlled penguins (and other stuff) to get to the frozen hypnotist, and when you finally find him (just to throw in some humor) he's in, like, California. That's just the basis of it though. Tell me what you think.

So The Frozen Hypnotist ey?
Well, um..
How about the Hypnotist who would be a penguin, has the important job of keeping Antarctica boring( or whatever icey place its located). Because if they are boring the animals wont be noticed and sent off to zoos! He does this by hypnotizing all of the animals into doing boring animal stuff. But in a freak accident he loses all of his feathers and freezes! So you have to survive the now totally insane Antarctica with partying penguins who are making every obstacle more difficult and more hilarious, to get to the hypnotist and unfreeze him to safe the penguins from being noticed by the zoos! Whacha think Pulse?

Just thought i'd say, I just played the first Tricorn Bear game, and loved it! The characters where so good, and the animation is great! I love all the designs, and the dialouge. All in all, amazing, so I can't wait to see how the rest turns out.2010-09-12 02:36:00

Both excellent ideas, you guys! I was gonna do something lame with the hypnotist stealing fish, but all your ideas are much better. I like different elements of each story, so there's got to be a way to combine the two! I'll brainstorm some and let you know what I come up with! By the way, thanks for all your help you guys! My levels would only be about 1/8 as good as they are now thanks to all your help!

I love this community.

Hey pulse! I have a story idea that made me laugh a bit inside
I was thinking, for the sneezy octopus, maybe there could be a feathered fish (I know, how unoriginal) that bullies the octopus because he won't give up the treasure chest he's guarding. Just a thought

I have a thought combining the previous two ideas:

What if the hypnotist is still a bad guy (mine) but he hypnotizes the penguins into being out of control party animals (austimerr). Then, with all the partying, zoologists need to capture and study innocent penguins (austimerr) and you need to put a stop to the hypnotist, but when you find him, he's in a very sunny place (mine) and there's a boss fight.

Well?

Love the update. I tested the bounce pads thoroughly and didn't die once. The pudding was awesome. Didn't look or sound lethal. The improvements to the rising-out-of-the-water set piece are epic.

Will the finished level be made out of cardboard or is that just for now? Hulk? I thought that the part after the volcano didn't really fit in. Why are you on a bridge thingy?
I liked the roomates but I didnt really like the old ladies so closs together but that was probably just to show them off. My final thoughts are that this is gunna be prettey sweet once you make it look purty.

Just played it two seconds ago. I liked pretty much all of it, but a few things.

1. It's kinda hard. Not in a bad way, but in a frustrating way.
2. I died multiple times on the confusing bounce pads. Maybe you cpould find a way to make it flow easier, and be a gaurenteed hit (so to speak)
3. I hope it ended right after the old ladies, cause that's as far as I got.
4. I loved the bit about the roomates, and the spring break.
5.The thing rising out of the water was GENIUS!
6. After Tricorn bear and the monkey king bungee jumped, i wnet backwards, and when I went forewards again they fell a second time. Maybe you should make it a one time thing.
7. One question: what was that thing in the pit by the roomates throwing pudding?

All in all, i can't wait for it to be complete. Let us know when to test it again!

The cardboard is basically how I "sketch" in LBP. I'm adding the different materials as we speak. The Hulk was just for lulz. I got tired of fireballs and decided to have giant electric fists (the hulk was just the best muscley arm I had ) The bridge? Just cause. I mean, why did you swing up a giant thing that rose up out of the water? Why are you killing those poor banana slugs? It's all the same answer: Just cause. And I'll make sure to space out the old ladies. I just got lazy there. Thanks for the input!

1. I think my levels are typically kinda hard. But it's do-able, right? And not so frustrating that you might just quit the level? 'Cause I want there to be a challenge, but not so much that you'd just go back to your pod. Get more specific on this point please! It's an important one!
2.With the bounce pads, you gotta not touch anything on the controller once you fall down on the first one (until the sponge that is). I've done a lot of tweaking so I think this might be as close to "flawless" as I'm gonna get. However, if you could specify which part of the bounce pads you kept dying on, that would help a lot!
3. Yeah that's as far as I've built.
4. Thanks! I didn't think that was that funny, but I guess the audience knows best!
5. Again, thanks! Also again, I thought it was cliche, but I guess not! Yaaay!
6.I'll throw a perm. switch in there as soon as get back on. Thanks!
7.A MONSTER.

It was meant as a good thing, pulse. I liked the surprise. And next time I have 4 friends, or 3 friends and a little brother, on I'll try it with them.

Do you think there's anyway to fix it? If you come up with some solution, let me know! Also, with the Island's DM in the back, I can't find a way to glue it behind the island. Maybe I can attach an invisible rod to the Island and attach that to some DM up high? Yes. That's what I'll do.

And no, the monster's not the Bad Banana haha. I just made him for fun a while back and didn't know what to do with him.

I think I have a good amount of beta testers for this level already, so probably not. Sorry! BUT I promise you that you'll be on the list to test out The Frozen Hypnotist when I start working on it! FIRST!

I've finished The Mysterious Berry Plant and am currently working on The Bad Banana. I'm starting to take ideas for The Frozen Hypnotist 'cause nothing is final yet for that. Also, if you have ideas for The Underdog Detective or The Sneezy Octopus (I may change it to Ornery Octopus), I'd be glad to hear your ideas!

For underdog detective I was thinking something along the lines of this:

It is a bad time for us dogs in Dogalonia. A bunch of rascal rebel cats have ransacked the national bank and made off with all of our doggy biscuits. We need a hero to save us from this dog depression, but first we need to find out who took the dog biscuits and, more importantly, where they are. We've decided to turn to the shady character; The Underdog Detective. But, as the plot unravels, we begin to wonder: Is he really on our side?

Thats all at the moment but I'll get back with more detail soon.

And no, the monster's not the Bad Banana haha. I just made him for fun a while back and didn't know what to do with him.

My responses are in bold.

Poo. LBP2 can't come out soon enough. I'm liking the shrinking better than what I said. Good job, brah! B-)2010-09-22 19:43:00

Well, turns out they postponed LBP2 so we're not going to get in until January D: Anyway, for the underdog detective, I was thinking of a kind of noir feel to it all, with slums and back alleys and the likes. Maybe with a shootout and a car or rooftop chase scene as well.2010-09-24 08:20:00

I played a little longer and found a few things, took pics and here they are.
1. I found this random bit of wood floating in the water.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24446
2. This bounce pad doesn't make noise.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24445
3. When I went back and down, I found that the invisible gas layer doesn't go down far enough, and that your fist doesn't either.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24444
I had just jumped from the checkpoint platform and thought I would go to the next platform, but I ended up where I am in that picture.
I think that's all. This time anyways.

Thanks! The pics help a lot. What happened with the fist not going down far enough was that it broke a separate piece of cardboard that wasn't meant to break. I think I'll change that to metal so it won't break (will that help?). I'll also make sure to add a sound effect to that bounce pad. And was that piece of wood by the first beach, the boat area, or somewhere else? Oh, and I'll move that gas right away!2010-09-25 07:35:00

I found something too. Right before you press the button to make the land mass move, I found a little hole in the back, and fell through it into the water. I found all your dark matter, and the sensor switches in the water. You might want to cover that up.2010-09-25 18:03:00

I'll add some horrible gas there, thanks!

Two things this time around :
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24619
Where is the island? It's not there, that's all I know.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24621
Oh, look, logic on display. How nice.

Oh, and I love what you've done with the old ladies. It is a bit tricky not to kill them, but me and a bud got through just fine. I think the plasma fish could use a redesign, maybe with a less bright plasma material and more detail? It was kind of hard to see them.

I had some major issues with the island, so I just got rid of it. The DM wouldn't glue to anything, so shrinking it down was an issue.

Unfortunately I can't think of anyway to make the fish lethal without having it glow some way. The electricity is even worse, and fire and gas just are weird. I might be able to glue some gas to the fish, but we'll see how well that works. I'll put up a clear screenshot of the fishes so you can see what they look like without the plasmafied material.

I kind of wanted the logic on display so people know to wait for the platform until it goes. If you have any suggestions as to how I can tell people to wait besides having my logic on display, let me know!

Haha, glad you liked the oldies. If you're curious, the last one is saying "Thank God for adult diapers!"

Well I didnt like the triangular tails, maybe make them a little more umm realistic. And the stickering on the fishes could also be more realistic. And maybe add a face to them, or maybe they do have faces but they fall too fast to tell but sadly I dont think you can fix that. Well I hope that helped!2010-09-28 22:51:00

Just played it. I loved everything, except for this one thing. I jumped off the part where the monkey has no crown, and turned around in mid air. i hit some gas, and then was under water w/ the crab. I thought it was something way further ahead, so i restarted the level. Maybe find a way to fix that? Otherwise I loved the new story, new detail and "that German thing"!2010-09-28 23:31:00

I'll try reshaping the tails. The fish do have a face, so hopefully the improved lighting, non-plasmified fish, and varied speeds of the fish will help you see that. The next update will be when I finish the boss!

Hey everyone! Long time no see. So I was thinking that MAYBE I'd just publish the level as is (without a boss fight) and build the boss in LBP2 as one of those directly connected level things. Would y'all be fine with that? I had some pretty big ideas/suggestions for the boss fight and would hate to just end with another humorously anti-climactic finish. Let me know your thoughts!2010-12-19 18:50:00

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=42531-Tricorn-Bear-and-the-Case-of-the-Bad-Banana!-pt.-1
Here's the level thread! Check it out, y'all.

EDIT:
Here's my synopsis for the next level, The Frozen Hypnotist!

Tricorn Bear and the Frozen Hypnotist!
Premise:
Penguins ask you for help because the evil Dr. Chameleon is kidnapping penguins! He’s freezing them in blocks of ice to transport them to his lab. They’ve been hypnotized into stealing fish from all the other creatures for his fish oil powered missile that he’s going to use to create a hole in the Ozone layer so he can warm up from the sun.

You shut down his freeze ray, but the penguins are still hypnotized. You have to destroy his hypnotizing machine and stop the rocket from taking off.

Boss Fight:
You succeed in shutting down the freeze ray and hypnosis machine. Dr. Chameleon gets angry and attacks you with his heat lamp robot that turns the floor to lava. Icicles fall down that you can climb on top of the robot to pop its brains, but he’ll melt them after a few seconds. To get the icicles to fall, you have to hit the robot with a swinging icicle to disorient him. He runs into a wall, knocking the icicles down for you to climb.

Gameplay ideas:
Riding on frozen penguins and swinging on hooks for the frozen penguins.
Swinging on/ avoiding polar bear paws
Jumping fish to cross freezing water
Shooting down swinging icicles to open doors
Icicle platforms that thaw with a heat ray/heat lamp
Self Destruct code for hypnosis machine
Disarm the rocket in a certain amount of time, or else you “die” and start over.

You guys have any other ideas? Especially for gameplay! I would love to hear more gameplay ideas! I think the story is pretty tight as is.

Wow, I played it a little while ago and love the ending. I couldn't find all the banana slugs, but I'll try again. I got all but one. The next one sounds epic as well. I'm in for testing.2011-01-05 02:51:00

That literally happened to me too. Anyway, yeah, it's good as is. Can't wait for it to be finished in LBP2!!!

Anyway, i have some questions about the Ferozen Hypnotist.

1. Will it be in LBP 1 or 2?

2. Will you need testers once again (I'm open, by the way!)

That's all, great job Pulse, on a job well done with the Bad Banana!!!

Thanks guys! And of course you guys can test. Y'all's my team!

Nana, Frozen Hypnotist will be in LBP 2, seeing as how the release is only 12 days away, and yes, I will need testers! You're in!

But anyway, I was talking with my cousin (the guy who gave me the idea of unicorn bears for my first level) and I've come up with some ideas for pt. 1 and pt. 2 of the bad banana and want to run them by you guys.
1. I want to move the ending of part 1 onto the boat you took in the beginning. My reason for this will be explained in idea number
2. Pt. 2 will be more than just a boss fight. Basically, you take the boat to the Bad Banana's Island of Nuts (or something like that). It will be a short romp through the jungle where the Banana's residual Crazy-effects make the players controls go wonky (left is right, right it left) and the visuals all weeeeeiiiiirrrrrddd.
3. That's it. A list of three just looks better. But I'm currently writing out some story ideas for the remaining levels and one new one called "...and the Ghost of Gorbachev!" Would you guys be interested in seeing them or should I just wait til I'm working on the levels themselves?
