Water Material?

Archive: 14 posts

I was watching a video of the helicopter combat level made during the community create jam and I noticed that the ponds and lakes appeared to be made out of an animated water material. I was wondering what material category it would fall into and if it was just aesthetic or did it have an effect on sackboy. I'd appreciate any answers or speculation that anyone has.

Here is the video, water material appears at about 3:20

It's just an animated texture / animated bump mapping. The material itself is solid, but the efect is pretty cool. There are quite a few of these animated materials coming our way 2010-07-12 23:05:00

Turning a material into water would be so cool. Like you would do to make something electric or gas you could turn into water. Sure it would just splash into a big puddle on the ground, but you could do so much with it.

Thats basically what I thought water in LBP(1) would be like. I was a little disappointed when it wasn't

Yeah, we had plenty of advance warning of water was going to be like. People ignored all the information that was available pre-release and instead decided to fabricate their own version. They then proceeded to get upset/angry/disappointed when their fantasy version didn't tally up with reality. I'm still amazed people are sore about the fact that they caused themselves to be disappointed by the water

As for other animated materials, I can only think of one other atm, which is the chocolate fountain. It's awesome. Also the holograph/vacuum materials have an animation that looks really nice if you turn the opacity down.

Part of the reason why we can't have moving, simulated water of any kind is that, well, it's still basically the LBP1 engine with enhancements, and that was done to keep LBP1 compatibility. So, you trade fancier stuff like moving water, for backwards compatibility.2010-07-13 13:25:00

If they want it they could do it and treat floor water as outflow it's more preference issue
