Ted & Robi ( SPOTLIGHTED!!)

Archive: 40 posts

Ted & RobiXenonHMW
http://i26.tinypic.com/19ngux.jpgTed is spending the day "with" his father at his company. Thankfully he brought a PSP and a book so the morning went by by quickly. It's almost noon and Ted is getting hungry.
This is a story driven adventure level. I would give more description but I think it will work better if people go in without having any idea of what the levels about. I hope everyone enjoys it.

Thanks to VelcroJones and AmazingFlyingPoo for playtesting and giving me feedback. Also a thanks to fodawim for posting the invisibilty glitch which allowed me to do everything I needed to finish it. Sorry for the weak LBPCentral "logo" but I was at 100% thermo and its all I could do.

This level is incredible! Going into it I expected a lot since I'm a big fan of Xenon's work, but I never expected something that blended story and platforming so well.

This is one of the most emotionally engaging levels on LBP PSP. I don't want to spoil anything, but by the end I was seriously impressed with the emotion that Xenon was able to evoke!

The platforming mechanics that are used feel very fresh thanks to the creature brain controlled robot. I was enjoying this level 100% from start to finish!

Awesome work Xenon!

Okay, good. I was going to rate it four stars just for how disappointing that ending was.

Oh well, not like I wasn't gonna replay a level this awesome anyways!

(Possible spoilers.)

Wow. Just wow. What an awesome level! I love me my platforming, and I love this level. Everything looked really nice and you made a cool office/factory environment. The core mechanics here were simple but did the trick, creating a refreshing playstyle. I didn't like the multiple endings too much, but I suppose that would have been the only way to set up that scenario again if the player fell. I can't wait to see what becomes of Robi v2!

Alright, im worried about replaying, because even though I "died" I enjoyed the level so much xD. I don't want the experience taken a little by a poor real ending. Eitherway I think i'll replay as it was great and I loved some of your ideas. (Im getting so many ideas for levels, and I have no experience with the create tool, I think I really should try it now heh!..)

Excellent level by the way, rated 5 stars and hearted. (I don't give 5 often.)

The platforming in this is awesome! It is a real inspiration to me and has made me want to start creating again! I think I figured out how you made the robot stop, It was either invisible material or moving creature stopping points. The only problems I had were the robot pushing you one way and not being able to jump on or over it.

Thanks SketchNZ for playing and your very generous comments. The funny thing is that I started this level a long time ago. So the eye was not even available at that point. When they released it I was pretty stoked. If you ace the level you get the original Robi... I dont think I would have left it that way but it's what I was working with up to that point.

With over a million LBP levels I'm sure everything has been done hundreds of times over. Its when you put your creative spin on it that things come to life. So don't worry about that at all.

Thanks again for the hearts and the play =)

I will try to address all the comments later tonight. Thanks for the awesome feedback! T

Xenon, Thanks so much for letting me have a sneak peak at your new level. It was awesome then and it's even better now. The little extra polish you put on it in the last few days is great, even though I thought it was ready to publish then, you made it even better. I liked the new music, especially the elevator music on the ride down. Little details like that always make me happy. Speaking of details, you are an artist. I have always liked your levels, well, like is an understatement. Every level you have made has looked awesome, and they are all completely different too. City in Chaos had the gritty urban feel and you captured the atmosphere of a city in panic perfectly. The opening to that level is still one of my all time favorites. With Trials of the Treasure God you had the whole caves and ruins vibe, and some of the best gameplay lbp psp has ever seen. Cambridge obviously noticed your exceptional level designs and brilliant gameplay, as you were nominated for a Sacky in the gameplay category.I still play that level to this day, even though I have never made it in the top ten high scores. It's just a level that has endless playability. Now with Ted & Robi you make a touching story about a little boy and his robot buddy. So once again you have done something completely different than you previous effort, and I am so very impressed with that. I have always considered you one of the best creators in lbp. This level is awesome in every way. The story, the dialogue, the platforming, the characters, especially Robi. By the end of the level, I really cared about him. That is not an easy feat to do in this medium. So yeah, I cared about the little guy, and when things turned out the way they did, it pulled a little on my heart string. That is not an easy thing to do with me. Lifespan by kaiju_kid, Now and Then by amazingflyingpoo, and now Ted & Robi. That is why I love lbp so much. There are so many ways to make a level. Story, platformer, puzzle. You have an endless stream of new material everyday, not all of it is good but every once and a while you get a level like this. And it is levels like this, and creators like you, that keep me coming back.

Thanks for making this awesome level my friend!!

Hey Xenon!,

Glad you're back, and with a totally awesome level!

I got to say I loved the story to this. Now I don't have to feel so lonely when I collect score bubbles Robi is the coolest robot ever, sure he doesn't look awesome, but he saved my Sackboy's life!

Story? Is awesome, and as I said I loved it
Gameplay? Very fun! Great platforming and it also had that Sandman feel to it.
Length? I finished the level in 20 minutes, and I played through it tons of times.
Materials? Nicely chosen and they clashed together great!
Stickers? You used them nicely and neatly.
Characters? Robi wasn't a big or had a lot in him, but he was alright
Favorite Section: The part where Robi saves you! or not.. That part just made me want to play again.

I got saved the first time, but I felt bad for Robi D: The 5th time playing he didn't save me because he kept getting hit with sludge on the face.
Anyways this was an awesome level and one of my favorites! :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3

... I never expected something that blended story and platforming so well.

This is one of the most emotionally engaging levels on LBP PSP... I was seriously impressed with the emotion that Xenon was able to evoke!

Again thanks, that is very high praise coming from LBP master of story telling AFP. I?m glad you were able to get into it. It's not my forte so its nice to hear that felt for Robi. I also have special feelings for the little guy since he was the only thing in my level that would not fall apart after a couple of saves.

I want to say after doing this I have a lot more respect for story levels and the amount of work there is, even though mine is a lightweight of text compared to other LBP story levels.

Hi, Xenon! You created wonderful adventure! Story, characters, environments, level mechanics - all done perfect! ... It was very interesting to follow it and you created very unexpected ending... Five stars and heart is yours!

Hey Domik12, I happy to here you say it was a wonderful adventure because that was my goal. Thanks for the hearts and the feedback.

Wow. Just wow. What an awesome level! I love me my platforming, and I love this level. Everything looked really nice and you made a cool office/factory environment. The core mechanics here were simple but did the trick, creating a refreshing playstyle.

Thanks BBB. I usually focus only on gameplay but did my best to make the story the driving force of the level. I'm glad you enjoyed the mechanics and play since that is what I really love about gaming. I did try to keep it simple because I wanted people focused on T&R story not trying to figure out how not to die(see my other levels)

. I didn't like the multiple endings too much, but I suppose that would have been the only way to set up that scenario again if the player fell

Yeah, I knew this would bother some people. But I thought the drama from the part before was worth the risk.

Alright, im worried about replaying, because even though I "died" I enjoyed the level so much xD. I don't want the experience taken a little by a poor real ending.

Personally I prefer the other ending but I enjoyed making both of them. I will say that to get one of the aspects out of the story you will need to see both endings.

Excellent level by the way, rated 5 stars and hearted. (I don't give 5 often.)

Well I?m proud to receive them. Thanks

(Im getting so many ideas for levels, and I have no experience with the create tool, I think I really should try it now heh!..)

The platforming in this is awesome! It is a real inspiration to me and has made me want to start creating again!

That is absolutely awesome to read! As much as I love playing LBP creating is on a whole other level. You should really jump into create mode.(or back in) I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys build.

I think I figured out how you made the robot stop, It was either invisible material or moving creature stopping points. The only problems I had were the robot pushing you one way and not being able to jump on or over it.

Creature stop points...ugh those were hard times.

The pushing could not be helped without making the robot shorter which would have thrown off some gameplay aspects. That?s why I wrote it into the story as one of the reasons he was getting...

To be continued...

I played the level again and i tryed to fail this time i didint want to kill ted but i did to see the other ending i love how you added the other ending instead of having a magic mouth say you failed go to pause menu and select reset, ugh i hate that when people do that, but you added another ending so that was good to see.

This level makes me want to create a level with a good story dont know why, it just dose

weird i did two reveiws on one level

Brilliant level Xenon. The idea of having Robi follow you around was great, and the platforming was fun. The design was also well done, Robi especially. The ending was also very fitting. Five stars and a heart!

Famouscustard,I'm glad you had fun with it and enjoyed the ending. Its also nice to hear you liked Robi's design. I did spend a lot of time on it and tried so many different looks. In the end I think the retro simple robot worked the best. Thanks for noticing!

Wow, that?s very cool of you to say. I think of my art style as serviceable = I loved how that intro to CiC came out and I am happy you did too.

=D =D =D This is akin to Ansel Adams complimenting your picture. Thanks bro!

Now with Ted & Robi you make a touching story about a little boy and his robot buddy... This level is awesome in every way. The story, the dialogue, the platforming, the characters, especially Robi. By the end of the level, I really cared about him. That is not an easy feat to do in this medium. I always smile when I read about how people felt for Robi. Its a great compliment. Reading this made me smile ear to ear.

I have always considered you one of the best creators in lbp. T... That is why I love lbp so much. There are so many ways to make a level. Story, platformer, puzzle. You have an endless stream of new material everyday, not all of it is good but every once and a while you get a level like this. And it is levels like this, and creators like you, that keep me coming back

Thanks for saying this... I'm not sure if I'd put myself there. But I will say that finding this site has had made me a better LBP designer. I find myself thinking of others creators as I work on my level. AFP when I putting the story and dialog together. Taffey when I'm trying to filter my ideas through the limited available stickers. You when I am designing the gameplay and combos and a whole host of others that I am and not conscious of. So thank you eveyone for helping me step up my game

Thanks again VJ for taking the time to write this!

Wow I can see that totally destroying the immersion. I have to admit when I found out that PSP LBP offered only unlimited lives I was a little bummed out. I am a big fan of consequence in games.

Hello, Xenon .

This level was very very wonderful.
I had died of the way and imposed, and it was the end not from a checkpoint, but there, so it was really thrilling.
That looked like a movie.
aaaaaaaaaaa was good in particular.
This was best in the level I have played.
I'm also playing the level in addition to you.

I gave you 5stars and <3

Wow...I'm kinda speechless right now. Haha. That level was amazing! To me, it was almost like a short film. I really liked the way you made it seem so much like a story was being told. I got kinda lost at one point where you had to find "another way around" but that wasn't that big of a deal, and it didn't affect how I felt about this level in the end. Thanks for such a great level man!

Five stars :star::star::star::star::star:, a heart <3, and a creator heart!

Keep up the good work!

eagerneph, I am thrilled to hear it was like a film to you as well. When I came up up with idea it was different than what I ended up with. The story kinda of took a life of its own.

Sorry to hear about the confusion at the part you mentioned. I thought it may be an issue but didn?t have the thermo to put up the speech bubble directing people back if they left that area,

Thanks for the Stars and heart.

I was skeptical at first with the title, but as we know don't judge a level by it's cover!

Story: 10/10
***SPOLIER***
Started out great with the elevator. You spelled cafeteria wrong. Basically guiding a helpless robot out of your fathers robot factory so it doesn't die. The end was phenomenal. Don't listen to others if they say it was too sad. I absolutely loved it, I saw it as Robi trying to save you proving he does have intelligence but was too late. LOVED IT!!!!

Music/SFX Choice: 10/10
Couldn't of chosen better music and SFX than that.

Corner Editing/Material Use: 9/10
It was a little boxy but that's alright, I mean it's a factory, it's not going to be all uneven! Materials were great, fit in with the factoryness.

Creatures/Objects: 10/10
Robi, I loved his simplicity. When Robi was scared about that robot killer I thought that was well made as well.

Gameplay: 10/10
It's not so often you come around an original interactive-story level. Everything was perfect. It was much like a factory with crawling through the vents, turning off machines, and racing through the sewer below. Loved it.

Overall: 20/10 (not an average)
This has to be one of my newest favorite levels, and I don't say that often. If I could give you 6 stars, I would of. :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3. I'm sure this will be spotlighted.

Hey Xenon,

Congratulations on making it to the Community Spotlight!
I'm really glad that you're still creating because I'd be really upset if I never got to play a level like this. I love the concept of relying on a robot friend to help you throughout the level, and the story was just incredibly well thought out. I also really liked the dramatic ending and how it played like a movie. Thanks for creating such an amazing level, and I look forward to more from ya!

Here are the videos of your level (I couldn't fit it into one!):

Thanks for the spotlight! I am happy you liked the level. I think the story came out better than how my levels normally do simply because I did not have much time to work on the level. I spent more time thinking about it.

Thanks for the videos as well.

Hey Xenon
Wow, where have I been? This level is awesome, and totally flew under my radar, lol. Well, actually it seems it came out when I was pouring all my time into a PS3 crown competition(which I won, woowoo). But anyway, better late than never eh? What stood out the most for me was your fantastic modeling- some of the best I've seen on the 'ol PSP. Small detail like vents and hatches, and extremely good stickering. I won't go on about the obvoius(Robi) because everyone knows that it was a genious gameplay device. Lastly, Loved that there was two endings. The death one being my favorite. If you've ever played my Lifespan levels on ps3, you'll get that joke. XD
Cheers dude

What's up Xenon. Time to give some FeedBack for you.

I haven't played a lot of your levels, but this level is what made me like you. I hearted the level and hearted you as a creator. I want to see more coming from you again, and hope you enjoy my feedback. As I first played this level, the intro was just a basic life story. Which I wasn't interested in much. The place looks plain too, but you know how to keep a dialog moving. Which I liked, and the story gets a lot interseting and even outstanding after you meet Robi.

I'm not quite sure if I did the intro correct. I think I did because I ended up meeting Robi. Robi is a wierd robot at first, but I just enjoy the story with the two. I liked the fact you had to go everywhere with him. Reaching certaing areas with him was fun. I also enjoyed the sewers. Too bad Robi wasn't there. Oh well, time for my platforming skills. The most original thing I've seen you implemented was the sewer water falling. I never seen anyone ever do that before. PSP or PS3. A very new obstacle implemented well done.

Now, that Robi is back, its back to cooperating with my buddy. I like the fact Robi stop following because the mechanism was scaring him. I also like the bubble machine too. Your platforming was unique and different because it consisted of cooperation with Robi. Your stickers and corner editing is well suited in the sewers. I like how the father is very secure; yet, Robi and Ted continue wondering. The most fearful and climatics scene happens. This story is very intense. I like how your about to die, but Robi is just the nicest fellow to save me. It's crazy because Robi was scared to risk himself saving you. It's a very touchful story, even from a game, it still gets to me.

The bad ending is very horrible, sadly I failed this level 3 times and earned this ending. ): I was so happy to earn the good ending though. I liked the relationship between the two. The story is just so nice. It looks like you really thought this out. The story is what made me heart you as a creator. It's very good and I would like to see another intense story to read from you. I've had no errors, glitches, or bugs during my playthrough. With that said, I'll move onto ratings.

Length: 5/5 (Took me about 10 minutes my first playthrough.)
Material Usage: 5/5 (Very Sci-fi like and I enjoyed the sewers.)
Sticker Work: 5/5 (The objects and area was alive with sticker usage.)
Corner Editor: 5/5 The whole area was absolutely marvelous.)
Terrain/Mechanics: 5/5 (Platformering was cooperative and very new. Good Job!)
Story: 5/5 (Like I said, one of the most touching stories I've seen in a level.)

Total: 30/30 Perfect Score!!

The level is very fun and a definite play again.

I loved this level, it had a great mix of gameplay and a very nice plot.

It goes to show that you don't have to create a super-uber-killoid-machine to make a awesome robot. You made it so well that the player ended up really caring about it the characters. Can't wait for a sequel!

Well I believe I owe you feedback from awhile ago so here you go.

First of all, I hate you for making two endings. I played this level so many times because I was convinced that last part where you die wasn't the only ending and I wanted to see the real ending. Seriously, I may have spent over an hour on replaying this level. I kept trying to pull the hanging thing to either side to keep it in the air longer but I always ended up falling to early. And when I finally was able to hold long enough for Robi to get under me, one of the sludge balls from the pipe had got stuck on his head and killed me and I was considered breaking my psp. But I think all that proves how good this level was, that I got that attached to it.

First of all, this is some of the best and most unique gameplay I have seen in any PSP level. The use of Robi as a platforming tool was brilliant and worked very well except for the occaisonal mishap when he pushed me to my death. But I never had an issue with Robi that lead to a restart, just an occasional inconvenient death. Overall I really didn't have any problems with the level except trying to get the other ending; the visuals were solid, the story was great, and it all flowed nicely. Great job!

well done! REALLY liked it. i came across it while i was searching and its been one of my favorites ever since! i liked the fact that there was an alternate ending. that was clever. i also like the fact that you can grow close to a character and you showed that with tedi and robi! thanks for the fun!2010-09-23 14:08:00

Shameless bump for all the new players. I'm not really active anymore with LBP since my PSP is having network issues.2011-06-07 06:11:00
