Mulberry Woodsmrsupercomputer
http://www.brentsimmons.com/lbp/mw.jpgCrazed lumberjacks have constructed a sawmill and are cutting down all the trees! Journey to the mill, shut it down, and save Mulberry Woods!
Experience Mulberry Woods for the first time... again. Yeah, I know what you are thinking. Mulberry Woods isn't a new level, it's a stinking remake! What's with all the creators (CompherMC, Javi_Haguse) remaking their old, crappy levels? Well... it's because they were crappy! Especially Javi's. So, like Compher and Javi, I decided to remake my very first level, Mulberry Woods.

Originally, I had planned for this to be a rather simple remake. A few visual upgrades here and a couple gameplay changes there. However, it turned into much more than that. It's still quite faithful to the original, but I overhauled a couple areas significantly. Personally, I think it's much better than the original and I'd love to hear what you think about it. And if you hate it, I still have the original sitting on my moon!

Special thanks to...

CompherMC - logic, gameplay... you know, the works!
Javi_Haguse - visuals, gameplay ideas
Keldur - gameplay ideas
DajDaj03 - clouds!

Who is that dashing sack in the orange cape?

When you first told me that you wanted to remake Mulberry Woods, I called you crazy. When we played through the old one again, I considered you significantly less crazy (ziiiing!). I'm glad we were able to convince you to change some of the major bits to make it a fresh, enjoyable experience. It's very well made, lighthearted and fun, but it still maintains that sort of old-school, nostalgic feel.

Well done.

(Oh, and that duct work scene is very well designed. It takes to true talent to come up with a layout that effective. Ha!)

Great remake MrSC! I loved it!

Still have the charm of the original but with more polished, detailled, and stylish visuals and characters!
What more could we ask for?
I love all the little animations that's makes the level more alive, great work on these!

The gameplay was really fun and precise, and flawless to me!

Now the level wouldn't be so good without those fantastic clouds in the background , but you still made a great job!

Seriously though, I always loved your levels, so as usual :

Now you can start working on ZV3...I said NOW!

Where did you get the wings for the Eagle? I've never seen them before.

Anyway great level: :star::star::star::star::star: and <3. Very polished and detailed with great gameplay, story wasn't that great (doesn't really matter...yet...).

Problems: In the part where you have to jump over the wood chipper (before the Eagle attacks the lumberjack) you can fall through the second layer and end up near the end of the level. Plus at the end it goes all laggy and I think this is because you may have cheated the thermometer in some way.

P.S: What are you doing making remakes, you should create Zephyr Valley 3.

It's an object that you collect in the story mode, but I can't remember for the life of me where you find it.

Thanks, I will take a look at this when I get home. Did it get laggy when you fell through the second layer or with the normal route?

Well, Zephyr Valley 2 drove me crazy, so I wanted to take a break and do something easy. I thought that a remake of Mulberry Woods would be fast and easy. I was wrong! It took me longer than I thought because I changed a lot more than I originally planned. Zephyr Valley 3 is coming though, but I can't promise it will be the next level that I work on.

1:OK, thanks, I probably already have the bird wings since I have collected everything in story mode. It's just that I couldn't find it.

2:The lagging happens not because of the route I took, it is because the thermometer is full and you are emiting (the end boss) something that overfills the thermometer. The same thing happened to my level and I have noticed it in Steve-Big-Guns' 'Something Below' level.

3: BOO! You suck...lol, I'm joking. Keep the levels coming.

P.S: Whats with the brutal Eagle kill?

While I am cheating the thermo, it's only a very small amount being cheated (the clouds and a few point bubbles). As you make your way through the level, you are essentially removing the bubbles from the thermo and one lumberjack is killed off as well. So, I'm not sure that it's due to cheating the thermo, but I will investigate when I get home from work.

Just playted this and have to say, it was brilliant. Even though it was just a remake of the first level, it still seemed like a whole new experience. The story was still fresh, the gameplay was superb, and the characters were amazing. I'm still laughing at that eagle takedown!

I really liked the new sap-sliding sections, the beautiful waterfall, and the well-planned vent scene. Just a great level!

:star::star::star::star::star: and <3

What could be better than this? Oh, wait. Zephyr Valley 3, that's what!

LMAO @ Especially Javi's

Its fun to see how a person grows as a creator... In this case, there was no growth. Same crappy level... lol
Kidding!
This is an awesome. Even though it's a complete overhaul, it stayed true the the original. Now everything just looks amazing (especially that fuel tank..lol) and the gameplay is much more enjoyable. Great job man!

Now you have no excuses to finish ZV3! (or to help me with mine lol)

Those Lumberjacks don't deserve a smexy mill like that!

I wish I had played the first one before this remake but I guess I will just see how much changed later.
The trees were what caught my eye in the beginning. These were great, new trees that hadn't found their way from the story mode into your level. After I saw these I knew the level had to be outstanding.
There were numerous amounts of details and eye candy from beginning to end! The background layers looked well placed and the flowers were scattered about nicely. The spider gave the level a little character too. . I also noticed things like the faint lights that eerily dimmed and the small creaking noises that occurred when branches would flow in the "wind."

A few nitpicks, nothing much though. The music seemed like an odd choice to me, didn't set in with me and felt out of place in some parts.
The sponges used to swing looked odd the same color as the muck in the beginning. Maybe you could experiment with other colors, although maybe I was just seeing things...

A few things happened in the mill that I don't think went as planned. The first log to spawn on the log saw bet got stuck for an amount of time and almost didn't come out, I had to jump on it and die before it unjammed. I also found myself out of the level after using the launch pad thing near the venting... I was jumping at the time but I still went way up there... I saw the "inner workings"!

An outstanding level in terms of gameplay and visuals, still some things that could use tweaking but hey, maybe instead of ZV3, a sequel???

Played through this twice yesterday and really loved it. I liked the first incarnation too but seeing it with a facelift in gameplay and visuals really made me love it all the more.

Besides all the adorable details (the bird's eggs, the spider, the hysterical signage on the bathrooms, the fact that there ARE bathrooms!), which are great btw, the characters give this level it's soul I think. Those lumber "guys" (don't want to offend anyone - lol) are great and I love the postures and expressions you gave them. I've always loved your character design and these guys are as distilled down and perfect as they come.

The thing that struck me about this level was how retro it felt. Playing it reminded me of the earlier days of LBP. You just let your material do what it does, look great! Now having said that, the updated platforming and flashier bits like the factory, the crane, the sunset after the chase all those feel really current and more fast paced than the original but they still have the original levels charm to them so it works really well.

I noticed a ton of hard to get to places that are just begging for extra score bubbles but that's just because I'm a bubble whore.... so says Jaeyden.

5 stars, hearted and a hearty thanks for reminding me of simpler times in LBP with your solid gameplay and essentially modest design.

I started the level alone and invited some friends.
One of them asked: " is this the remake or the old one?"

I see that question in a very positive way cause you kept the "nostalgica" and the feeling of the old level and covered it with some awesomesauce and some crumbles.
This is how remakes should look like.

With that all being said.
Zephyr Valley 3 - Go for it!

EDIT-I see some people calling for ZV3. Zepher valley is great but i would like to see a new setting personally.

Hiya-

Played through this like twenty times already (lol) and I'm still not tired of it, mainly because I was aiming to get the highscore on one player, and I did eventually (I nearly got a perfect score). The other reason I played it so much was because how awesome it is, I loved it, personally, it's one of the best levels on the game yet. Levels like this are my favorite kind, and you're the master at crafting them perfectly. One of my favorite things about this level is one of the things most creators don't really care about, but I love it, and what I'm talking about is how awesome the characters look, you've stickered and corner edited each of the characters in the level to pure perfection. You've added such smalll visual touches that very few people would notice, like when you jump in the woodchipper your sackperson's arms and legs fly out (brilliant idea there), and the bird's nest in one of the trees. The gameplay was just the right amount of challenge for me, not frustrating, but not too easy. Some areas reminded me of Subterranean Setbacks (but in a good way), like in the first area near the eagle, it had a few jumps that gave me that 'I know I can't make that jump' feel. There was also a few very cool new gameplay ideas, like the slippery sap areas, and dropping the gas can down the hole to mess up the place was a very nice touch. Everything was flawless but I managed to break out of the level, at the area where you have the first lumber-jack encounter, you can go behind the last tree stump and layer shift down to the middle of the chase scene, but other than that, you've done an amazing job here, I'm totally amazed. Once again you prove why you are my favorite creator, great job man!!

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and <3ed the level.

By the way, I found the ducky sticker, it was by the checkpoint that was near the vent areas (highlight to find out where it is).

So what's next, Basilisks Bog 2?

Really fantastic. Everything was designed incredibly well.... in the original, I always loved the spewing wood chips. Well, here they were MUCH more impressive. The saw cutting through and spitting the wood was really clean and realistic.

The level retained it's charm from the original. The characters were fantastic, and I loved the use of the sponge as the ground.

My score stunk compared to some of the others.... I'll see if I can take care of that a bit later.

5 stars and a heart!

I got to play this earlier with a friend, and i loved it! The characters were great and i loved the little details like the logs of wood being sawed in half as your riding on them! The section where you ride the log through the saws is my favorite gameplay section i think, i love the improvements from its original Mulberry woods counterpart.

Splendid. 5 stars and heart.

Lol that FrogBoy sure likes to pinch the top score (although I managed to beat his on Chinatown )

Anyway, back on topic - I've always loved your levels, purely because of their understated but really effective visuals. Whereas loads of other people slap tons of stickers on materials like too much makeup, you tend to just leave the materials as they are and they still look awesome! From the comments so far I can't wait to play this *goes to fire up PS3*.

EDIT: Just played both of them, and the difference is tangible. Can't really say much that hasn't been said already, but the second level seems so much more polished than the first, with so much more detail. The factory section was very clever, possibly my favourite piece of industrial gameplay in the whole of LBP. The story and characters are veery nice, much more improved upon than in the first level. I did think that the score combos were better in the first level, though, where you had to time your runs to get all the bubbles - just having lines of triangle score bubbles is a bit boring, try dangling single bubbles from the trees a bit more like you did in the first level.

So yeah - very polished, very pretty and very fun. What more could you want?

An excellent level for sure.
Visuals and attention to detail are superb.

I did find what I think is a little bug.
At the stump beside the outhouse you can jump down behind it and drop into the lower level where you end up with the skulldozer chasing you.
Also you can see a prize bubble just as you drop through there too.
Maybe that was intentional I don't know.

I love it! The way you take a theme and incorporate and meld it into a fun environment to bounce around is always so fantastic, its a definite trademark of your levels. The new bits all looks and play great, Bill is a great adversary (stickered to perfection), and the vehicles have a really nice chunky design to them. This re-dux definitely takes the enjoyment of the level up a good few notches, and it was already pretty high to begin with! It's got so much of that traditional LBP charm - I'm in awe!2010-07-13 21:37:00

Thanks for all the kind comments and thoughtful feedback everyone! I'm glad people enjoy it.

Both of these issues should be fixed now. Thanks for letting me know!

See! Where would you be without me!?

Playing a different game probably, so thanks for keeping me motivated!

EDIT-I see some people calling for ZV3. Zepher valley is great but i would like to see a new setting personally.

I have some new level ideas, but I might wait until LBP2 to explore them. I'd kind of like to wrap the ZV trilogy in LBP1.

So what's next, Basilisks Bog 2?

I have some ideas for it, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. It will happen someday I hope!

One question though: If you die 3 times in that area is something suppose to break? (dont want to ruin it for anyone)

I assume the treads on the dozer broke? Nope, it's not supposed to break, it just does sometimes.

Slight tweaks to make:

The tiny winch on the spider should be visible.
There is a triangle of DM clearly visible beneath the log rolling section. Under LumberBill.

I was 20 points off first place.

There, I've fixed your precious spider!

I did think that the score combos were better in the first level, though, where you had to time your runs to get all the bubbles - just having lines of triangle score bubbles is a bit boring, try dangling single bubbles from the trees a bit more like you did in the first level.

Really? I actually thought they were improved. While I do have areas with lines of bubbles (especially the ending), I tried to implement some layer switching, so that players have to switch quickly and keep the combo going. I'll try to switch it up more in the future.

I forgeot to point this out, but I had to do the chase at the end a few times (not due to any problems, i was being rubbish) and by the end I actually got a bit nauseous from the camera movement. I loved the original version and you managed to improve it in every aspect with this remake. Great design, fun gameplay, a great story, its all very impressive. I found a random bug at the chase sequence. the sawdozer manged to spawn strangely and ended up rolling upside down. Attention Deficit Disorder, it drives the design of all my elevators and intro sequences. (Have to box in the player so that they can jump around impatiently without breaking it or screwing up the camera?)

I played this masterpiece of a level when my friend Jimmy was over with his copy of LBP(Mine is crack'd).

I gotta say, this level has good visuals and gameplay. I liked how you incorporated some humor, like Lumber-Bill, not Jack.

The part that you have to ride on the wood on the conveyor belt through the blades had me grinning because of how unique and gameplay-wise-great it was. Nice touch on the bark getting cut off as the saw went over it. I was also grinning because Jimmy and I kept on dying by slaps/grabs/late reflexes.

Overall, this level was top-notch.
:star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 from me.

Keep it up!

Gorgeous, character design is fantastic and it was a lot of fun!

The only thing which I'm sure has been mentioned maybe was the end. I died a hell of a lot times so the whole falling down a vent and waiting x seconds got a little frustrating. If you could make it so the guy only says SAW..not even sure now lol or something short and snappy after you die once it would cut the waiting and keep the action going.

Other than that I had a lot of fun.

My intention was to give you a moment to catch your breath before starting the chase again, but I can understand how it could become frustrating. I haven't changed what he says, but I did go back and alter an area in the chase that was giving people a lot of trouble. So, hopefully that will prevent people from having to replay the chase a bunch of times.

This was an absolute delight to play, thank you mrsupercomputer.
I loved the level, the things that stood out to me the most were (awesome things):
- the water effects
- the character design
- the background when you first meet the lumberjacks
- the chase
- the ending with the eagle

I have played this 2 times already and I'm gonna try to get #1 on the scoreboard!

That was an great remake level. I compared both the original and the remake versions of the level and I see some great changes in the remake version. Great character designs, visuals, gameplay, and story. 5 stars and a heart.2010-07-29 02:57:00

NECRO!!

I was googling something on Comph and this was the first link (not sure why, oh internet ^.^)

Im digging it up because I did go and check it out and for people who werent around in 2010 (like myself!) this is a must play level =) If you enjoy a nice platformer, its well built, clean design, lil story, bite size challenge... good stuff and a nice reminder of LBP1 charm with a sprinkle of LBP2.
