Marvel Level Kit & Costume Pack Reviews

Archive: 35 posts

For anybody still on the fence about getting the whole costume pack and the level kit, here is a review, for what it's worth... (And hopefully other folks might chime in with their reviews as well.)

Costume Pack #1
These are all great costumes with fine detailing. And each costume is broken down well into individual components. The online catalog at LittleBigPlanet.com lists the components incorrectly for practically every costume, but in nearly every case, the actual costume is broken down the way you'd have hoped it would be.
Daredevil - The bulk of Daredevil's mask is actually implemented as part of a skin, even though the mask part is raised and textured differently than the mouth area. The horns, coupled with some extra side stitching for detail, are a separate item in the head category. Daredevil's blind eye patches are also separate. His nun chuck is attached to his gloves (which it must be since we have only one "hand" slot for gloves and/or held items). He also has separate shirt, pants, and boots that add a stitched leather look over his already red body skin.
Mystique - Mystique's eyes are implemented as "googles", which is actually pretty clever because it will allow you to combine Mystique's feminine eye accents with any of the base eyes we already had. The skull is part of her hair. Most of her costume is a skin that also makes her a torso a bit more sackgirl shaped. The skully belt with skirt is separate.
The Thing - He has separate brow, hands, torso, skin, and shorts.
Doc Ock - His costume is mostly a skin, with separate hair, wraparound goggles, and of course the signature tentacles. The tentacles are especially cool because they actually emote along with sackboy, for all four emotions. And you can get the upper pair to track your arm swings too, especially when you're angry, at which time the claws also open extra menacingly. But the tentacles do occupy the torso slot, not the back, which means Doc Ock can't wear a trench coat.
Iron man - My personal favorite. He's very detailed, and and he comes complete with glowing repulsor emitters on his hands, feet, and chest, as well as glowing eyes. The helmet, gloves, boots, and chest piece are all separate, and a skin provides textured detailing for the yellow on his arms and legs. His mouth piece even hinges open a bit so you can properly make big mouthy expressions.
All in all the initial costume pack couldn't have been done much better, and certainly won't disappoint.

The Level Kit
The four included levels are really excellent. The first three are as good in my book as any MM story level, and in some ways better than the original story levels because MM is using more evolved techniques to create better visuals and challenges. The levels are all fun to look at and even more fun to play, and they do a good job of featuring the Marvel characters. My favorite level is #2, which features bounding along the tops of cars on a high speed freeway. The effect is so well executed that it is easy to forget you're playing in a level that ultimately has a limited width. The last level is a boss fight, that, while straightforward, is still designed to require several challenging minutes to complete. [Ed. Note: Littlebigpodcast's videos for all the levels are linked below in the comments, thanks to supersonic56.]

It's a good thing the levels are so fun to play, because, in terms of value, they manage to compensate for what is otherwise, in my opinion, a somewhat disappointing collection of creator goodies. Five of the six materials are cardboard, basically just repetitive sticker treatments. Three of those have the same super smooth texture and the other two share a slightly rougher texture. (The super smooth ones look to me (on my ancient TV) like they might be smoother than any other texture in the game, which if so, might become their best value.) It's hard to see any but the cityscape one getting much use. One nice thing about the cityscape is that, being light black and white, it is easy to color with lighting to create different city moods. The last material is "Thing Skin", a stone material, and it is well detailed, but almost certainly destined to be sticker-colored to be of any general use.

The music comes as three tracks, one of which is interactive, but the interactive one has only two sliders - "high intensity" and "low intensity", and it is hard to really change the tone or feeling much. All the tracks sound good though, and all seem very well suited to super heroics. There is no sound effects object.

The rest: The online catalog shows everything, and there's not a lot to say beyond that. The objects seem oddly chosen, and don't have any special features (none have lethal bits or grabbable parts, for example). The decorations give some nice additions to complement the rooftop background and the cityscape materials, or to create new costumes. The stickers are mostly faces and body parts of Marvel characters, either realistically portrayed or characatured, as well as every sound effect caption you could imagine ("WHAMMO!"). There's definitely some creative potential in the sticker set, but it lacks a large collection of basic building blocks like the PoTC pack had.

Overall I'd say the levels are the main attraction, the music is a nice expansion, and you'll find something useful in the rest of the bits, though perhaps less than you might have hoped. All in all I'd say it's a reasonable value for the money, but if you're on the fence, you might just want to tag along in the levels with a friend who owns the kit, and save your money.

It's cool. Not sure why they went with the dreads but they look good. The goggles wrap around sack boy's head forming a loop. The signature tentacles look great but I found them distracting to play with, especially in a group. (but I suppose I'm easily distracted) if memory serves the rest is a skin.

Hmm... *starts to rewrite his level*

Anyway, thanks for the review. I'm still wondering about one thing. I'm assuming the new materials are used in the levels. How well do they mix with regular materials? Maybe someone could post a picture?

I'm unable to provide a pic, but I will say that I don't recall seeing either of the comic character wrapping paper ones anywhere in the levels. The black-and-white abstract boxy one was used, somewhat awkwardly I thought, as a common material for paneling an underground lair. The Thing Skin one, usually stickered, provided rocky accents for that same lair, and looked the part. The cityscape one was used quite a bit, and possibly the similar close up windows one was mixed in. The overall style in all the levels is somewhat spartan and smooth, a lot of cardboard stickered with bright colors, presumably to evoke the feel of being in a comic book. Some stickered metal was mixed in, and a little glass, but not much else.

The new music just didn't do it for me. It was too loud and chaotic. I just turned the volume really low after couple of minutes of play. :/2010-07-07 18:03:00

Just got the level pack and I have had one playthrough.
I think the levels are pretty cool. Some nice little gameplay elements used throughout. (thor vs venom comes to mind)
I haven't had a look at any items/materials/etc.
I didn't find the music distracting/loud at all.
Oh, at those signs with the impact sound are great! + some nice jokes throughout (lol @ spideys one).

Haven't gotten the costume pack, but I will now that I know the descriptions on MM's site are all wrong. (ex. Thing's stuff is actually separate)

Unfortunately I am on dial-up atm, so sorry to all my friends spamming the join/invite buttons. I felt so bad I might just play offline tonight. I saw a 2x and a 4x area I will not be able to reach for a while.

I was playing the second level and it seems to me that Mm used the layer glitch for the background. Could any one confirm this? Ontom thought so too, it could just be us but it really looked like objects were in the background.2010-07-08 02:47:00

I posted something of the like in another thread.

I'm not so sure, I don't think they used the layer glitch there.

Anyhow, I took pictures to make sure.
Here's how far the bell decoration from the POTC pack, at full size, stretches from the background to the front of the truck:
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65/warlord_evil/APhoto_1-1.jpg

I went into a blank level, and I then placed another bell decoration at full size on a thin layer in the back layer. I had a thick block placed at the foremost front layer that would be considered to be in the same layer as the truck:
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65/warlord_evil/APhoto_2-1.jpg
The bell appears to be cut-off at the same area, this suggests that no glitch layers were used.

I'm not against the layer glitch, but I don't see it in this level.

EDIT: I just noticed, that in the level there seems to be some kind of space in between the tire of the truck and the supposed front thin layer, which the tire should be on but is not, so I don't know what's going on there.

Also, the buildings look like they're layer glitched because the of lighting that was used. I think...

Anyone know how to get the Thor head sticker in level one? The elevator stops, and I jump, but don't make it. Am I just timing it wrong?2010-07-08 03:51:00

Cymbol you have to jump exactly as it reaches the top so you get thrust upwards by the momentum. It works, just have to time it. Pain because the elevator doesn't drop back down. But oh well you should be able to get it in a couple of attempts.2010-07-08 04:29:00

huh interesting. I love how mm is making stuff look like its glitched ie layer but its not, kinda sticking it to us for resorting to the extra layers for more depth.2010-07-08 04:49:00

Exactly. MM don't use 3D glitch. It's all perspective/shading.
There are also "magnets" in the levels. (NOT "real" btw).
MM just use the existing tools creatively. Proving you don't need to resort to that darn 3D layer glitch.

I'd like Dr. Octagonapus better if the spaghetti arms were on the waist. I don't like going shirtless.

Wish I bought Iron Man now. Well, I'll just wait till payday. [I wouldn't have saved by buying the pack I just want Iron Man Octa and maybe the Thing]

My favourite from Pack 1 is "The Thing". I'd have to say that strikes me as most useful so far for an LBP2 sackbot.2010-07-08 14:59:00

I plan on getting this pack but haven't got around to it yet (I have a minor misunderstanding with my bank: they seem to think that because my account is empty I can't buy things). I'm wondering if the character head objects are 3d objects occupying the thick layer similar to the doll heads, or if they're flatter, relief type objects occupying the thin layer. The pics make them look full 3d, but it's tough to be sure.2010-07-14 00:05:00

They occupy 1 thick layer each.

It's just clever use of the tools. The background moves but you don't so it just looks like your moving, an illusion. Just watch the actual level background and you'll see it clear as day... well it's pretty foggy back there but.. .2010-07-14 03:39:00

Oh, I see it now. Thanks for the heads up Emitted i guess Lol. but it was just well done in this scenario, compared to those weird train bomb survival levels where the ground is emitting then the train starts doing summersaults and spins LOL...

Loved the pack, was saddened to see that the sticker glitch attacks even official MM stuff though (like in the tunnel portion of stage 2).
Gotta love the invisible winch (magnets) they used. Made something similar a month ago when screwing around with a concept based on Katamari Damacy. The way they covered up the empty space with a decoration like that was pro. D: Then again, this is MM I'm talking about.

This is a magma material (painted) with a couple of things in the hands legs and head ... not worth paying for that ... I've said it
